What it says in the title, if Calgar lost all his limbs to the 'nids, why was he not put in some sort of dreadnought?

I assume it isn't a case of lose all your limbs, may as well get stuck in a dreadnaught, the dreadnaught supports the pilots life, whereas Calgar seems to not have that many difficulties other than the fact he has bionic limbs. He can lead the chapter easier and with more flexibility than needing to have a techmarine following him close by at all times. Lastly, when not in battle, a dreadnaught 'sleeps'

Because he's still alive? Heroes in Dreadnoughts are there because they are effectively dead and the sarcophagus is the only way to keep them fighting for the Emperor.

Bionic limbs are fairly standard tech. Dreadnought internment is for when the space marines have a warrior too valuable too lose, but too badly wounded for standard 40k medical efforts to save.

I always understood that being interred in a dred made you pretty logey and dull witted, prone to sleeping for centuries and generally more grumpy and pissy than you were before. These don't seem like good traits for a chapter-master to have.
They're good as a sort of walking-tomb-memorial for respected warriors, but they aren't the sort of thing you'd give any responsibility or command power to.

An extra dreadnought would be contradictory to the codex of course!

In all seriousness, dudes in dredd armour are basically dead and only held on by a coffin that can move.

Most fluff I've read, whether in the new codex or the 2nd ed Ultramarines codex, says his body was "broken" but that he wasn't explicitly dismembered. Evel Knievel broke every bone in his body and he didn't get put in a motorcycle-themed Dreadnought, why would Calgar?

I'd have to go looking through some books, but usually people who get interred into dreadnoughts are way, way beyond just limb loss when they get interred, basically they are going to die anyway and the only other option is internment in a dreadnought sarcophagus (If available, and if the person being interred isn't coherent enough/of a rank enough to deny it, if it would mean taking the dreadnought shell of another chapter hero.)

If there is the viability of survival of just with bionic replacements and they'll be good to go, doesn't make sense "losing" them to the dreadnought process.

Because a dude in artificer armor with lots of wounds and a good save he is way survivable.

As a dred he would get wrecked by a wave serpent in a single volley...

Because then it would show that our heroes are fallible and can be felled by any chump. Complex ideas like that would be too much for GW's writing.

I forget where but it's stated that his arms where replaced, dismembered? Idk but they weren't savable.

Real reason is that as a dreadnought he'd get destroyed quickly, now he has resiliency instead.

You are referring to an outdated story from 1988. When a character has existed for 25 years in a universe that constantly changes, it's hard to always keep track of what he's up to, lol. I don't think the Bionic Calgar story is still relevant in the current version of the canon. Back then he was also originally found among the survivors of the now-retconned Hive Fleet Locust. Of course, which is impossible in the post 2nd Edition canon for both Space Marines, and the Ultramarines.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

Because if he was turned into a dread, he would never see battle, because he would be too fragile!

Calgar is already dead. He died fighting the Tyranids and was subsequently replaced by an Alpha Legion operative.
That is the only real reason for Calgar's 'miraculous recovery' and not being turned into a dreadnought.

The Ultramarines are one of the richest Chapters around so they do have many dreadnoughts, but they're also one of the most efficient Chapters so they have access to good medical care. A few bionic limbs is not going to slow down a marine - in fact they might even make him more powerful. And the Ultras probably know how to buy the best and how to install them.

If Calgar had lost half his torso and both arms they might have gone for Dreadnought. As it was he could be restored to fighting condition "easier" and the Chapter didn't need to throw some ancient hero out of his sarcofagus.

Yeah. He'd be much easier to kill if he was a dreadnought.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And the obvious... because he's not a dreadnought. If you knew what a dreadnought was, you'd know he doesn't qualify.
