As I said in another thread, I already have orks and BA- I've invested thousands in being gimped as hell.
Can't I just win for once? Take the easy way out?
I demand the consent of the Dakka Dakka forums for this action!

Tau are the ultimate epitome of Evil. They make DE and Chaos look like cute, fluffy kittens in comparison. Do not fall for their evil sorcery! Even by thinking about Tau and starting this thread, you may have already doomed yourself!

Have you tried using your Blood Angels as "counts as" Codex: Space Marines?
Finding some new life in your collection at the price of just a book would be better than jumping on the Tau bandwagon in my opinion.
Now if you legitimately enjoy the way Tau plays and would love to paint/convert the models up more power to you.
Starting an army just because it will win more hasn't been the best motivation in my experience.

Tau are not evil (although this is probably heavily opinionated seeing as my first army was Tau), but playing with cheese is. The only problem is that Tau have an unnatural amount of cheese. Pretty much, as long as you aren't a powergamer then playing Tau is fine.

As tau, you won't have any assault troops that need to make it into combat, so your firewall of ethics will be fine!

I'm a new player and I have to admit that I heavily considered Tau for my first army. I still consider picking some up, but I think I'd be safe from most of the hate because I'm not a mech fan, I buy models I like the look of and I love the look of Tau infantry, it'd be pretty hard for me to cheese it even by accident.
Also I don't get the whole "anime" thing. I haven't watched much anime, but if the Tau get heat for looking like japanimation I don't see why Eldar get a pass.

If you wait by the river long enough, the bodies of your enemies will float by.
Escalation has already put them a bit on the back foot since they don't have many decent Lords of War choices.
After a few more armies are released, or perhaps a new edition, or when GW has sold enough tau kits, they will be at the bottom of the competitive pile again.

So now people won't play armies better than theirs? WHO WOULD ORKS PLAY?
Would it make people more comfortable if I painted them like Zentradi and hummed the Zentradi attack song?

That's fine although some people would argue they have as much right to refuse to play your tau as you do to refuse escalation units.
Personally I'm not sure about escalation, but since the Warhammer World events use it, so do I since they're the only events I attend.

I've found this post riddled with irony. It just shows how long I've been out of the game. When I used to come on dakka back in 2010 or 11 all I'd ever hear was how unbelievably OP Blood Angels were. All the hate towards Space Marine players doing counts as to get the BA bonus's and Tau were like the worst army that had like one viable build. It just goes to show, don't buy an army based solely on it's cheese cos one day that cheese will be covered in mould and stinking up your refrigerator. (not saying the OP did that, just that was my overwhelming memory of Blood Angels back in the day).

Switching armies because of OP-ness is the path to the dark side.
In our gaming group, any super top tier armies have points handicaps that they bring with them.
In general, if you're fielding a top-tier army, the opponent gets 25% more points to spend. (Ie 2500 if its a 2k game.)
Unless, of course, they are also fielding a top tier army.
I played a farsight shadowsun bodyguard Death Star with triptides and a long strike hammerhead and ionhead (couple kroot squads in reserve) list vs. a few lists with that handicap running to see if the handicap was too harsh or not.
Won all 3 games. My heaviest losses came from a chaos space marine list that got some good rolls and managed to down one riptide and a kroot squad before getting tabled. One game I just lost 0 models.
Playing tau in this age should make you feel dirty.

The armies I enjoy get beaten like rented mules though. It's fun because I play with nice people, but a recent GK/Eldar/Inquisition army I played went so badly the guy started giving me tactical advice. I'm newish to 6E but not 40K. I'm not Hannibal (from history or the A-Team) but I usually held my own in the old days.

You could just wait until Orks become cheese. If I were you I'd just wait and save the money. I don't think it's worth spending money on some cheese just to have it rotate out in the next edition.
However, if you were to predict the cheese for the next edition and buy it now...

In a couple of months when the new Ork codex comes out they might be the mobby, runny, stompy silver bullet for cheesy Tau players. I'd save a few grand and be patient and see what tricks the boyz have coming.
If the new codex stinks, some nice blue shooty boys might make good Ork slaves. Or just have your Boss loot em and make T'rks.
Bottom line; meta changes constantly and no matter how much you like winning, you'll have no fun doing it with an army you don't love. if you love Tau, fine. Otherwise you'll probably be wasting a lot of time and money.
Until then, have you tried just running 8 scratchbuilt deffrolla battlewagons at them while screaming?

OP, I only suggest starting a new Tau army if your current armies are already completed; it sucks to have tons of projects on the table from multiple armies and not one fully built army to field.
If your Orks and BA are good to go (built), I say start a Tau army. Regardless of their power/cheese/whatever, it'll allow you a different play experience. Orks and BA lean more CC; maybe it's time to have a shooty army. Whether it is Tau, IG, etc.
Before you set off to go Tau'ing,..I think the models need to be appealing or they may never be fielded fully painted.
I have Tau. I bought my first Tau models over 8 years ago. I'd buy stuff here and there; mainly because I thought they looked cool.
Since you have BA...go get a few Tau pieces, and ally them up, and see how you enjoy them.

I've played against Orks with my Tau twice. I did not win a single time. Then again, the odds were not in my favour and Thraka got into close combat with a waaagh... Um, Crisis like being opened by Thraka can-openers, right?
Needless to say, I need to overhaul my strategies massively.
It should be noted though, that the Ork player wasn't thrilled by my fire power and at one point was giving up. If only I hadn't told him to continue playing... he won the game,
