To help you face the ravening hordes of tyranids, make sure you pick up Codex Dataslate: Tyrannic War Veterans, which is available to pre-order now from the Apple iBookstore. This download tells the history of these unusual veterans, explaining their origins and organisation and why they’ve become such an important part of the Ultramarines Chapter despite being outside the strictures of the Codex Astartes (which the Ultramarines are known for sticking to rigidly).

Led by Chaplain Cassius, the Tyrannic war Veterans are experienced killers, showing no mercy to Xenos filth. They are often equipped with special-issue ammunition and equipment, the rules for which can be found in this Codex Dataslate, which allows you to take Cassius and the Tyrannic War Veterans as an allied contingent to your main Imperial army.

Now the patient waiting begins for the Tyranid Vanguard Organism Dataslate as well.

If you look at the sample pictures in the store, there is info on a formation. Someone with better eyes or a higher resolution display might be able to glean more info, but it looks to contain Cassius, one or more TWVs in drop pods, and stromtalons. Gives a pair of special rules.

I downloaded the sample, not much in there.

I am anticipating this to have a far larger effect on the game than the Tyranids themselves.

I expect them to be Sternguard with extra rules for combating MCs effectively. Which somewhat ironically will be utilized more to fight Tau and Eldar than the bugs.

6 Stormtalon Gunships.

...which is three more than you can take in a full army, and this is a side detachment.

Stupid.

*update* and four more than you can take in the Astartes Storm Wing which is meant to be the flyer dataslate.

FFS guys

*another edit* That page in the preview does say "Datasheet" on it. So it might be that that 6 stormtalons thing is an apocalypse datasheet. Hmm

It is up to 6 (not sure what the min is) but I see your point. You are burdened by being forced to take the vets in a drop pod if you want all the FOC free flyers. While I suspect that's not going to be a big deal, as they should be a flavor of sternguard, it is a chunk of points. And unless I'm reading this wrong, only C:SM armies can use the dataslate, so you still need the storm wing to give air cover to the wolves etc.

Sure it could, they could give all the units in the dataslate a 2++.

Actually, reading the force limitations on the page, you aren't allowed to take Drop Pods for the Veterans.

Guess they decided they didn't want people to get easy access to more drop Sternguard.

Third Panel:

The Tyrannic War Veterans Squads may not take Drop Pods as dedicated transports.

It saves you time on release day. That's why I did it. As soon as the file is live, you can start downloading.

My bad. My casual read of blurry small text parsed that as "must". Made sense thematically as the vets drop into the heart of the swarm, with only the stormtalons haveing the range and speed to cover them.

The transaction is going to take the same amount of time whether you do it now or on release day.

Right, but you get the book sooner on release day. I.e. I spend 10 minutes today and get the book 10 minutes sooner on release day. It is really insignificant, but considering I spent the day refreshing the black library page hoping it was posted...

I agree. The picture has them holding a temple, so they are probably surrounded, cut off, and only Stormtalons can break through to pound the swarm into paste.

But, I'm pretty sure they won't let us get Drop Pods for them because they don't want any Imperial Army having infinite Sternguard. Since it's 1+...

I already explained. It takes about 10 minutes to check out of the store and such. It saves you 10 minutes on launch day.

Mine worked perfectly. I just refreshed the BL download page constantly that day until I could download it.

The fact that this formation explicitly says they can't take pods implies to me that they normally can. Assumption on my part. This is assuming that the data slate will contain a stat block for the basic unit, in addition to the formations.

And frankly, with self-allying and double FOCs, you are just a few scout squads away from as many sternguard squads as you want.

They might not be sternguard++ anyway, although I think most of us think that. They might get something like PE:Nids, but at the cost of only having hellfire rounds, rather then the full load of special ammo. We'll find out soon.

I'm just hoping the HB from the sternguard kit can find a good home here.

I'd like to point out that it doesn't say full sternguard squad.

So 5 guys + cassius, then proceed to take 3 units of scouts and 2 libbys and 10 fething storm talons.

Cassius also gives PE Nids to any unit he joins already. I'll be interested in this as I love these guys and am assembling bits to make,a less rubbish Cassius anyway.

So these got removed from the latest SM codex so they could DLC them as a dataslate?

Cassius is still in the SM codex, but the Tyrannic veterans never had a presence inside the codex. So...these are models that finally got specific rules for themselves now.

My concern is that slogging through the digital releases has now become a chore trying to find the ones I would want as they don't divide out which armies each one belongs to.

They were in the 4th ed book, 1st time UM got a dedicated unit, then were translated into much harder Sternies in 5th ed.
