Wow, what a piece of garbage! I am glad I didn't order the limited edition version.

I am selling an original "Iron Warriors" painting by Karl Kopinski: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/121232313078?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

Elaborate on that?

If you are Alpha Legion fan, they come off extremely well in this novella.

I liked it. It also manages to explain why Russ was on Terra in Vengeful Spirit without violating the plotline of the Space Wolves not being at Terra until too late.

I'm sure a bit is lost when you read the Cliff Notes version of a 170ish page novella, so I'll highlight a bit more of the Alpha Legion exploits for you.

Spoiler:

They effectively took the Space Wolves out of the war for the forseeable future. They identified that Space Wolves suck at void war and went right for their weakness. They anticipated every tactic and ploy that the Space Wolves used, were slowly grinding the Space Wolf fleet down while suffering light casualties, probably would've killed Russ even if their respective Primarch had dueled to the death and the AL primarch(whichever of the two) had lost, and still managed to extract the core of their fleet from being destroyed by overwhelming numbers and firepower that ambushed them while they were spread out and about to deliver the deathblow to one of the most feared Legions . Yep, you're right dude, they totally didn't come off well in this novella.

Well, let's see...

Spoiler:
The Alpha Legion has pursued the Wolves into the Nebula and the story begins with a description of the naval engagement. Lord Gunn is in command, after making the case to stand and fight to the Primarch. When the Alpha Legion draws in the wolves launch a successful boarding action against the Alpha Legion vanguard, crippling and disabling many of the first line. The Alpha Legion, playing the Wolves strengths had used the vanguard as a diversion, stripping the ships down to skeleton crews, allowing the second line of heavier vessels to fire through their own ships blunting the Wolves initiative. The Wolves realize they are already understrength and disengage, pulling back farther into the nebula knowing that if they cannot overwhelm the Alpha Legion with speed they wont be able to outmaneuver them in the confines of the cloud or win a battle of attrition against the Alpha Legion’s superior numbers.

So, AL outnumbers SW and is in better shape but decides on a tactic of using it's own ships as bait. Those ships must be grown on trees everywhere and the crews worth nothing. This is quite idiotic since AL was never about sacrificing but for the team work. They are not Death Guard or World Eaters in that. They are smart and use every asset to it's maximum potential. Drawing SW boarding parties so they could shoot SW ships and their own is mental and at the end this idiotic idea doesn't even work and SW fleet escapes the complete destruction.

Gunn sacrifices himself and his ship to destroy the Delta, an Alpha Legion capital ship. The Fleet continues on until it reaches a dead end, and prepare for a final stand, but a Dark Angels Star Fort and attendant fleet arrive to drive the Alpha Legion off. In part one and two, several sections detail a lone, unnamed operative hacking into the Wolves’ records, and it is revealed he is a Lutherite Dark Angel, attempting to discover the VI Legion’s loyalty. During the Wolves’ final stand, Russ engages Alpharius (disguised as a Terminator) allowing the operative to send a signal to the Dark Angels confirming the Wolves as loyal.

So SW can be infiltrated by DA but not AL. How about that! And from nowhere Bat.. Dark Angels! And this is with AL supposedly preparing the trap to the point they prepared their own ships for sacrifice. Yep, sounds very plausible. Never mind the capital ship that was destroyed because you know... reasons. That and AL can't apparently plan nothing right.

Just like I said: garbage.

...

The moral here is that a summary often doesn't capture the essence of a story methinks.

I think Mr Wraight did a fine job of making all the legions that appeared seem competent , give each of them their moment in the spotlight.

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/blizzard-partners-with-random-house-for-new-book-deal/0156878

Blizzard has signed a partnership with book publisher Random House to produce new novels for its World of Warcraft and Starcraft franchises.

The deal is set to kickoff in March with the release of World of Warcraft: Illidan. The book will feature the titular demonic night elf Illidan Stormrage, and is set to be written by William King – of known for his work on Games Workshop properties.

An unnamed Starcraft novel is to follow that, penned by Tomothy Zahn – the author of the acclaimed Thrawn trilogy from the Stars Wars Expanded Universe line of stories.

Here's a video from Blizzard announcing the news:

A guaranteed novel length release every month? Hopefully in paperback! Still that is far better than the occasional HH book we get now mixed in with a scattering of hardbacks and then 60 short reads, novellas, micro shorts, and reprints of 10 year old books that should be in omnibus form.

If this is imperium vs orks and if we're going to see promotional gaming or mini releases around it, perhaps they could release a new ork codex instead of the awful phoned-in rubbish we got in the current one.

Or it's going to be a fairly one-sided deal... again...

Would have been nice if they'd devoted their energies to finishing the HH story arc first...

Did wonder about that.

Wonder also maybe if this might well also use or relate to the forthcoming plastic HH minis/game ?

It'd largely be the same marks of armour -- so you could use them again .

Release a revamped or new ork boyz box or something and away you go.

The Beast Arises was written/concepted in 2012 - i guess that was the time when the HH novels start to slow down?^^ i mean, 12 books - that's a lot of pages (probably - hopefully )

12 books in one year for a single story arc? I wonder how many of those will be limited edition hardcover 100pg novellas for $100 that you can only pick up in person on the Isle of Man on tuesdays that fall on odd numbers days of every second month.

For those that follow the HH closes, has it actually been slowing down? With how divided up the distribution is now, I don't follow it beyond popping in the thread here occasionally. From just watching this thread, it seems like it's been even more fast paced in terms of releases albeit with audio novels and novellas that don't make it to bookstores. It felt like they're spreading that previously delicious HH Nutella thinner and thinner on each piece of bread IMO.

In terms of actual paperback books that I buy and read it has slowed a lot, it has been months since vengeful spirit came out.

In terms of ebooks, audio books, reprints and stupid expensive limited edition written in the authors blood short stories then yes, they are milking the cow dry harder and faster than ever before.

New series looks interesting. If they are normal sized paperbacks I might get into it. But I expect them to be £12 a pop hardbacks at the very least.

Damnation of Pythos and Deathfire came out after Vengeful Spirit (not that anyone should/would read them, but they are the post Vengeful Spirit "big books" in the Heresy-series).

Yep which is the problem with the series.
The books are released in hardback, then large paperback, then the smaller "legacy" paperback as they are now calling it. Vengeful Spirit was the last to come out in the smaller sized (i.e. original size).

I've slowly lost touch with the BL since they moved to this release format. I have over a hundred of their books in my bookcase, but I think I've brought all of 1 book of theirs this year.

Macragge's Honour was okay. Typical comic book fodder really of big bright pictures with large font to denote loud stuff happening, though some of the visuals are neat.

Also, a lot of the dramatis personae shown at the start of the novel only appear for a frame or two, or just one frame with no dialogue or relevance to the plot at all. Why?

Well lads, we have two options.

We can support it, talk about how much we like it and buy every new book eagerly as soon as it is released, which because of the success will mean they slow the core releases down and start padding with audio books, novellas and anthologies.

Or.. we can ignore it and then they'll can it half way through, ruining it for the handful of people who were collecting and readin it.
