Picture a great library, it's librarians proud keepers of all knowledge. Now imagine half of the librarians turn to Chaos, and burn everything because they do not need science where they are going. We are the last librarians, desperately searching through the ashes to find what's lost. You may innovate, and parade your bright engines in front of the entire galaxy, but could you survive what my order has? Could your little caste of engineers survive daemons running rampant through your temples as hereteks burn priceless dataslates? Could you survive being the last High Magos standing, your Skitarii desperately defending you from the daemon engines moving ever closer? Could you survive 30,000 years of progress torn from your hands, ripped to shreds, and hurled into hell?

Your technology is excellent, but you lack willpower. The Machine-God has given you great talent, but you have not used all of it. O'Vesa was a shining example of what the Tau could be, but instead of tearing knowledge from the corpses of your enemies, you hide in sterile labs and poke some half-alive sapients with probes until you find what you need.

You do not fail? How can you learn? For failure is but mere information, and the acquisition of new information is the greatest goal possible. Can you say your Riptide engines do not fail, do not occasionally kill their pilots or destroy the continents they stand on with their reactors? No, you cannot, for I have seen a malnfunctioning Riptide explode and kill thousands. They died for the Omnissah, God of Information, God of Machines.

I cannot say I have never failed, and I know my order has failed many times. But through that failure, we have weapons that destory suns. We have engines that can send sapients through time. We have kept the Omnissiah-In-Aspect-Of-Emperor's body alive for 10,000 years, so he may finish his Great Work.

Where are your augmentic implants? Where are your nova cannons and chrono-weapons? Where are your Akashic Readers and Ark Mechanicus? They are nowhere, for you have not failed enough.

A bright future? It is impossible, for I have striven for it and always failed. This galaxy is doomed to eternal battle, to forever struggle against the forces of Darkness and Chaos. All I may do to stem the tide is embrace Logic, allow the Machine-God just a second longer to complete his Great Work, which will tear Chaos away from this plane. Until then, we will stand. We will hold the line, with blood and iron, steel and hydraulic, tread and muscle. We will pour fire into the slavering hordes, until either we or they are wiped out. We are the Adeptus Mechanicus, Priesthood of Mars, Rulers of Ten Thousand Worlds, Masters of the Human Form, Chosen of the Machine-God. We will not die, we will never stop researching and discovering until the last piece of archaeotech is torn from the last Adept's manips.

What can you say, in your white-lit labs, tinkering with doomed technologies, while the universe falls apart? Will you stand and use those wonderful machines, march forth in your Battlesuits and armour, to reclaim the glories of the Lost, or will you die sitting, oblivious to the world crumbing around you?

The earth caste do fail, a lot. failing is part of the learning curve. They even caused a few stars to supernova by accident when trying to drain their energy, and are using those results to try and develop sun killer weapons.
