OOC: Well, the mechanicus believe it does, whether that is fully true or not is still up for debate. Especially as, that brings up the philosophical question, does, for example, ork or tau stuff have them?

I'm sure most of the stuff the imperium has that has at least some energy source, has status checkers and stuff, but is that the same as the idea of a "machine sprirt"? Short answer, yes-ish. To the mechinicus any automation is machine spirit, but that does not mean that everything is self-aware.

Sadly lex does not even have a page for machine spirit but still both sites are as "trustworthy" as lex; lex is done by the same people who just so happened to be linked with BoS. They also put there sources for forth and fifth edition which bring up how machines spirits are in everything...

Ork tech can not be hacked by other races because orks believe that there trukks will drive and there guns will shoot... it makes no sense but thats what makes the orks awesome

OOC: The smaller items' 'machine spirit' is more superstition, and there are cases of space marines discarding weapons or armor without a second glance towards it. There are also cases of tech paralyzing power armor, and I don't think it'd be that hard for there to be commands along the same lines for the armor to force the user to do a certain action.

Iron Warriors Omnibus (like it or hate it, McNeil's writing is still as much canon as other BL writers) has an Imperial Fist dropping his empty bolter, and didn't even think twice about it. It wasn't a desperate act in the middle of a battle. It just didn't have a use anytime soon.

Siege of Castellax has a terminator get completely paralyzed by certain electromagnetic waves IIRC, leaving him completely defenseless. Sure, that'd be easier to do than making certain actions done, but I still think it's possible to do.
