As I understand it, this GenCon will feature the launch of D&D Next.

Anyone planning on going?

I am on the fence. I'd love to attend the 5E release. But I'm pretty sure none of my group will be up to it and I have no idea if people on here are going. Would be a good excuse to meet Ahtman, however, who I believe lives close enough to "casually" attend. Alfndrate, how about you? Anybody else?

I imagine I will be going in some capacity, what with it being in my backyard. This may be the year I actually register for events early *gasp*.

Gencon is always in the same place: Indianapolis.

I'm going. My wife wants to do the Catan tourneys, I'm going to try to snatch up the third IKRPG book and play a bunch of Iron Arena, maybe try and get in on the Who's The Boss and Tiers for Fears events.

Excellent. That narrows down the timeline for when we begin The Hunt.

I was going to recommend a Dakka meetup, but on second thoughts...

Yep, my best friend and I decided to make the pilgrimage in honor of DnD Next., even though we never progressed past AD&D 2E.

Even booked my flight and got a room already.

Well my good fellow, I will see you there. We should coordinate some RPGing.

And then ... (carefully avoids looking in Kronk's direction) ... The Hunt shall begin.

The only official presence I'd bank on is FFG hocking the 40k RPGs, especially Dark Heresy 2E, and 40k-themed boardgames such as Relic. GW does not attend this or any independent convention. There have been 40k tourneys there in the past, I'm told, and people sell 40k stuff including custom terrain.

I guess I could leave stuff in the car or the room, not sure how I would feel about it, but I do like custom stuff. I will give this more thought, I got a ton of Amtgard bros who do a big demo here yearly.

I don't know if you want to go to GenCon on the strength of the 40k scene. Ahtman, who is also posting ITT, will be able to tell you more as he has actually been before.

GW has had a booth the last 2 years. They sold the LE black library compilation books, some forge world models, and all of the IA books. Last year they also brought of their super heavy stuff (new necron thingy, + other stuff) as it wasn't long after the Apocalypse release.

I don't recall there being any big names (authors, designers, artists, whatever). I would have recognized Alan Bligh, for example.

Columbus, Oh

My club (40kOrigins) sent 2 guys to GenCon last year to run "Intro to 40k" style games in the hall..

They got sold out and overwhelmed with requests to run more, with the result that a couple more people might go this year (like me)..

We won't be running a tournament, but might run some of our "mission specific" events with all miniatures provided, as well as the "Learn to play" events..

Well, it used to be in WIsconsin, but that was years ago. From what I've heard, Indianapolis has been much cooler to the event. Local businesses prepare and are ready fro the crowds of gamers.

I'll be attending, most likely with friends this year so time at the DP9 booth will be limited, especially compared to last year when I worked the show.

As has been said, GW does run a booth under the Black Library and Forge World banner. I've heard FW supply is limited, so if you want something from them, get it the morning of the first day.

Event-wise there's a huge minis hall. I don't remember seeing a lot of 40k stuff going on, but there's certainly room for it if someone wanted to organize something.

It always is. They need to improve that part.

I had booked a room directly with Hyatt the day they became available (late-Aug I believe). Went in today in hopes of seeing if I could get a better deal.

Tried getting in at noon and it took 5 minutes for me to even get into the waiting room. 45 minutes of the waiting room and by the time I could even check, closest hotels with availability for Fri-Sun were about 10 miles out. On the bright side, the Gencon rate for the Hyatt was only a couple bucks different than what I had booked.

As has already been stated GW doesn't have much of an official presence but BL and FW tend to have a little booth. There is usually at least one decent sized tournament going on and other little events that sell out quickly as well. I don't recall much in the way of Fantasy, but 40k is certainly present. Privateer Press has filled the vacuum and has a big presence at GenCon with Warmachine and Hordes. There is a restaurant around the corner from the convention hall that has a special Warmahordes themed menu every year. At lunch time they have been blocking off the road next to the convention center and lining it with food trucks of all types, so you don't need to go far to eat.

I'm hoping to partake in any Next festivities and get some Hackmaster (newest edition) in.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Yeah, we had multiple people trying to get a room and it did not go well. Ended up with four rooms at three different hotels scattered over the area, and not particularly convenient.

It was very annoying as there was a lot of rooms unavailable after 2-3 minutes with all the Friday reservations tied up for some reason.

Last time I went, I ran demos for Rackham all day.

We made our reservation a couple weeks ago with a hotel a few minutes out because they have a government employee rate.
