so for anti-Taurox movements. Why the vehicle, or any quad track vehicles are considered 'out of place' for the IG?

Ok, I'll take the challenge.

So. Let's take a look at the tonka truck again.

Spoiler:

The basic idea is there. A big, boxy, utilitarian type tvehicle with what looks like some decent firepower and some poorly thought out design decisions. That's pretty much every Imperial Guard vehicle in a nutshell.

Now, I'm going to show a few pictures of some of the classic IG vehicles. Let's see if you spot the difference. \

Notice anything?

Unlike most other factions in 40k, the IG is known for having barebones vehicles. If you'll notice in all three of those examples, all of the vehicles only show a small amount of iconography, if any all. There is little in the way of extra parts and symbols that isn't added by the crew later, and they definitely don't come from the factory sporting titan sized skulls mounted to their front grill. They are simple, barebones, built for a purpose. These are not works of art, most aren't ancient machines that have served for centuries (Executioners and Vanquishers sometimes being an exception)

These are vehicles designed to be cheap and simple to produce and WORK. They're essentially the Soviet design philosophy of WWII. The tank isn't perfect, and has some glaring flaws, but if we can crank out enough of them, it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter if the tank's engine breaks down after 200km if it's just going to get destroyed in it's first week of combat for example. These are tanks that can get destroyed by the HUNDREDS in an engagement depending on the foe. What sane person would justify welding a massive skull to the front end and Fleur de Les on the "wheels", a part that will often get damaged? That kind of work slows down production time, and adds extra work and cost, things that the Imperial Guard can't afford. It flies in the face of the "build them simple and cheap, and build a lot of them" design philosophy IG vehicles are known for.

To put this in perspective, the tonka truck has more ridiculous ornamentation than most SPACE MARINE vehicles. And you know, it's not like each space marine vehicle isn't a priceless relic that has served for centuries. Most Sisters vehicles are more adorned with symbols, but then again, they're a major part of the religious cult of the Imperium, of course their equipment will have it. They're not expendable meatshields.

The model really doesn't need much to get it to fit into the IG aesthetic. Make it much more simple and remove the fancy icons, and that alone would make it fit in much better. Removing the weird track parts and just giving it wheels would make more sense too, as wheels are going to be a lot cheaper than 4 separate track assemblies.

But then again, this could very well just be a command/special forces vehicle. If that's the case, all the fancy stuff makes a bit more sense, since the people riding in it aren't getting thrown into the meatgrinder as often, but I would still think it looks out of place.

So does that clarify a bit? I know there are probably other reasons people dislike the vehicle, but that's what I would wager most people dislike about it, whether they realize it or not. You can see similar sentiment to the Stormtroopers, as they have a bit of this going on as well. I just forgive them because I like the poses and weapons they have, and I have a soft spot for berets since I have 20 of the 2nd ed plastic stormtroopers.

On an unrelated note, does anyone else get the urge to go into a GW like a week before these guys come out and play with their 2nd ed stormtroopers, bragging that they totally "got the plastic stormtroopers before anyone else?"

Well I can see myself getting the codex, stormtroopers and possibly the supplement. I like the new aesthetic for them but as it doesn't fit with my army I'm probably going to carve off a y fancy bits down to the bare armour. And closeups of the taurox are not making me like it any more....

The biggest problem with the truck is that the track sections are way too tall. It would look much better and more IG:ish if they were about half the height they are.

I'll reserve judgement on the transport until I've actually seen it, as things always look better in the flesh. But at the moment, I'm really not liking it too much.

If I was going the storm troopers route, I think I'd much rather go with these;

I'm just confused by the direction they took IG. I was expecting to see some better cadians or something in this thread... got some crazy not-really-IG stormtroopers and that abomination.

Well, new guy, my Terminators don't go without helmets bub.

Until it's on the shelf it's a rumor. This stuff looks as bad as the other 40K knock-off miniaturesfrom other games.

Someone said it made them look commando, well commandos don't wear their berets to battle. That includes American Paratroopers, Rangers, and on up the chain.

This is my opinion. If I lived in Spain, I'd probably think the commandos with berets were cool... but I'm not so I don't.

And once I get my Orks going, and these truck things are for sale, they're going to be Ork trucks, Bad Moon Clan.

Its a common problem. Some people in the past haven't realised that my Praetorians were a GW product. Now those new Storm Troopers with some of Vic's pith helmet heads. Could be a goer.

As for the Taurox. I could see myself getting one as a transport for the Tempestus troops and/or HQs but there will always be a place for a mass produced Chimera for my rank and file.

Storm troopers look decent, wouldn't be using the weird cape officer so that's not a problem. Might trim back the edge piping on the armour to make them a little more utilitarian. Price is fine as all I will be getting is one box to use in an inquisitors retinue.

The vehicle still looks like a steaming pile of bullgak that they have then over ornamented to distract from its crappiness. You can't polish a turd but you sure can sprinkle it in glitter.

Now just to wait for some smart arse to post the myth busters link.

I don't care about if you have bare headed termies or not, I do too. I was protesting against the misconception about it being a "new thing" that GW designed outfits like that. Some people are just complaining for complaining's sake...

The plastic ones were monopose. They were supplemented with metal autocannon and heavy bolter crews, two sergeants and melta and plasma gunners.

For the trooper front right, I think its a kneeling loaders upper half stuck them on a melta gunners legs.

There are some other subtle conversions, maybe moving the head or altering the leg stance.

They do in comics and movies, which is a bigger source of inspiration for GW's design aesthetic than real life military.

40K is about what looks cool, not about what's practical.

I honestly like the new storm troopers, won't ever think about buying them at that price though. It's a cute little price point but a bit to big for me.

The tank/vehicle/something on the other hand is a bit of a let down. I was hoping for a new guard vehicle and was really interested in what they could come up with that would look awesome next to a Russ/Chimera. Guess now I know, they can't come up with anything that looks even simply good or just ok next to those two tanks. This is... ah whatever, the new codex will just be the only thing to get. Should be glad they had the decency of saving me money I guess.

Well, the Stormtroopers do look great in the new pics, although the price is too high for a unit that, really, needs to be used en-masse to work well. The option for a command squad is nice (and if the supplement simply allows STs to be taken as allies, slotless or otherwise, my Inq and GK armies will be very happy). The stupid thing is, if they'd done a seperate 5-man command squad and a 10-man infantry box in that style, with less options, I'd be perfectly happy to start phasing out my current Stormies.

Instead, I'll just be buying some Eisenkern...

I just hope that based on the cover they make commissars good again. At the moment, they're far outplayed by inquisitors.

Similarly, I just want better Stormtrooper rules more than anything else. They've also been beat out in their kamikaze melta missions by Legion of the Damned. With their current rules they might as well be expensive doom divers.

A few years ago there were alot of rumours flying around about adeptus arbites being released as a mini dex style thing. With the armoured vehicle and ogryns with riot shields, doesnt seem too unlikely. Personally I really like the stormies, the un-practical, ostentatious look always appealed to me for 40k. The taurox is not awful, may be more passable in a less ridiculous scheme.

The Taurox does look better now I've seen a bigger/better res pic of it, but the track configuration still looks daft to me, rip 'em all off and give it eight chunky armoured tyres

Reminds me more of a support type vehicle than a fighting one though, like a Morris with tracks, apologies if anyone else has made this point, I went to bed last night when the thread was up to 8 pages and I've just fallen back into it!
