There's one episode between "This is Mr. Wilson" and "Suicide Squad." It's a pretty important one too, given that it takes place mostly on the island.

Awesome. I'm fed up of being stuck left behind (I know there's other... ways.... to watch it, but I've got HD and a big telly and I'll be damned if I'm not going to use them.)

Between being left behind in this and the miles we're stuck behind in Agents of Shield it's like being stuck in the 90's again.

Remember all the "excitement" they tried to stir up when they announced Summer Glau was coming on board as Isabel Rochev? Has anyone put out an A.P.B. on her?

I'm also disappointed in the Island plotline this season. It just isn't as interesting for some reason. I'd have preferred they didn't include Sara Lance in the Island portion and just left here "five year gap" a mystery other than the League of Assassins. This isn't her story, after all. Keeping her life and trials a mystery would have been a good way to bring in dramatic elements from her past without worrying about conflicting with stuff from Oliver's.

Still a much better show than Agents of SHIELD.

if they take out Sara from the island story they would have to come up with some other method of souring the relationship between Slade and Oliver

They never said she was going to be in every episode, and the Queen Consolidated side of the plot line has taken a bit of a rest whilst we deal with the Slade side of things. I'm sure it'll come up again during Moira's run for Mayor.

That and you don't want to advertise that Summer Glau is in your show too much, lest you tempt the Cancellation Gods.

I like the island stuff. I kinda wish there was more of it. I also like each year having a different island story, not a long one that drags on year after year.

There's an article on Time Magazine's website that pretty much echoes my opinions.

The CW series may not help DC topple Marvel and its Avengers — but that's not what's really important

Captain America: The Winter Soldier has received plenty of praise since its release last Friday, not only for its quality but also for the fact that it reinforces and enhances the superhero universe that Marvel has spent the last six years (not to mention the next 14) trying to build. But following the conclusion of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, the state of the DC Comics superhero universe is not as prosperous, nor its future as well-assured. Green Lantern was a complete flop. Man of Steel received middling reviews and failed to outperform any of the Iron Man films or The Avengers at the box office. The sequel to Man of Steel is scheduled to be released in 2016 and will add a new Batman to its universe, but has already received a wave of criticism because that Batman will be played by Ben Affleck. Point being, the outlook for DC Comics’ big-screen future isn’t particularly sunny.

When Arrow debuted on the CW in the fall of 2012, it did so to little fanfare. Based on DC’s Green Arrow series, Arrow tells the story of billionaire businessman Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) who, after being shipwrecked on a deserted island for five years, returns home to Starling City and vows to “save” his city by eradicating the pervasive criminal element. As far as superhero origin stories go, Arrow‘s doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel — especially given his similarity to another masked, crime-fighting businessman billionaire in the DC family. And if Arrow had been a movie, it likely would have made no greater impact than other movies based on lesser superheroes (i.e. The Punisher) did.

Fortunately, Arrow was not a movie. Countless critics have noted that television is no longer film’s little brother — not an inferior storytelling medium. Instead, television has increasingly become the mode used to tell more artfully realized stories, and Arrow demonstrates that nowhere else the opportunity to create a universe like the ones that Marvel and DC want be found. The obvious drawbacks — smaller budgets, fewer explosions, less CGI, more obscure actors — are easily outweighed by the ability to tell a more complete story, to develop characters beyond their abilities and readily apparent flaws.

Part of the reason that superhero origin stories have been critiqued as cookie-cutter and derivative in recent years is that — with few exceptions — they all cram the same basic story into the span of an hour or two, with little room for deviation or innovation. Arrow has shown itself capable of telling that origin story in a manner that, if not entirely original, is better implemented when flashbacks tell their own story, instead of just serving as annotation for the narrative’s main action. Chronicling Oliver Queen’s time on the deserted island in each episode gives the backstory a thorough, organic feel that that’s all-but impossible for a movie to match.

It’s not just the format that distinguishes Arrow. Calling it the best show on the CW may be damning it with faint praise, but it’s head and shoulders above its competition on the network. The acting — particularly by Amell as the titular character — isn’t prone to the over-dramatics that plague the prime-time soaps that typically populate the CW’s schedule. The writing follows the same pattern, employing some of the traditional superhero cliches at just the right moments without overusing them. Arrow‘s understated moments provide just as much tension and drama as its larger set pieces (which, though not the same level as those in a movie like The Avengers, still pack an appropriate punch) It’s a superhero show that exists in the real world — just a slightly different version of it.

Crucially, television provides producers with the opportunity to build other superhero (or superhero-adjacent) characters from within the show itself. Since the first episodes of its first season, Arrow has made a concerted effort to do just that. In the comic books, Green Arrow was often accompanied by Red Arrow, Speedy and Black Canary, among others. Though there have been hints (perhaps obvious ones) all along at the characters in the show that would ultimately become those superheroes, Arrow has afforded audiences the opportunity to get to know the characters not simply as their superhero alter-egos, but as the people they were before inhabiting those roles.

The show has also provided a venue for other major superheroes to be introduced, all within the same DC Universe. “There are so many characters in the DC Universe who haven’t gotten their due in TV and film,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said before the show’s premiere in 2012. “We’re so excited to reach into [the DC comics] roster and take some of these lesser-known characters that are beloved by fans, and do our spin on the characters.” On such character is Barry Allen (better known as The Flash), who showed up in Starling City midway through the current season. The original plan was to have one of this spring’s episodes serve as a backdoor pilot for a Flash spinoff series, but earlier episodes in which Allen appeared turned out so well that the CW went ahead and gave The Flash its own pilot. It’s a safe bet that Arrow‘s devoted fans will be eager to follow to his own show a character in whom they’re already invested.

If you need further convincing that the model is working, Marvel launched a TV show of its own, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., last fall on ABC. Despite ratings that have dropped by well over 50% since the pilot, the series could still be picked up for another season. The problem that Agents has run into is that, unlike DC with Arrow, Marvel hasn’t been willing to use its superheroes with name recognition to lead its TV show.

Whether DC will have more luck turning its superhero universe into a successful franchise (or franchises) on the big screen than Marvel did using its movie superhero universe into a successful TV show is unclear. What is clear is that it doesn’t much matter, so long as Arrow remains the place to go for the most fully-realized superheroes around.

Just finished season 1 a few weeks ago and I was very impressed with every minute! I find that most American tv shows having ~20 episodes per season always tend to repeat themselves and be exact duplicates of another show but Arrow introduces enough new characters and plot twists to keep the story going. Guess I had better start season 2 now, only 18 episodes to get through...

So who else caught the season 3 opener ("The Calm")?

At first it felt kinda slow, but then the end of the episode showed that was intentional, as the episode title suggested. Wow. It looks like things will ramp up quickly starting next week.

The DC shows are really looking strong right now.

Okay, according to the news, Captain Boomerang is supposed to be showing up. I could have sworn he was the Flash's enemy not Arrow's. Anyone able to verify/set me straight?

Well she's missing out. And if you acknowledge that in order for the show to prosper the "CW Tax" must be paid, then you'll get on fine with the show.

A lot of the enemies that show up in Not-Batman are not his comic villains but other character's enemies, but that hasn't kept it from being a good show.

Edit: I forgot, is this also the place to talk about The Flash or should that be a separate thread?

Only jokingly, but be it isn't as if I just pulled the comparison out of thin air. There are some elements more common to Batman and many Batman villains have shown up in the series such as the Royal Flush Gang, Harley Quinn has had a cameo, Merlyn made a reference to where the League of Shadows was, and in season 3 Ra's Al Gul will appear. They originally approached Liam Neeson to reprise the role as well.

GA's Batman similarities go back to the comic, though...it's not like it's a CW invention. He even had an Arrowmobile and an Arrowcave.

Those were done as blatant rip-offs of Batman in the comics to capitalize on Bats popularity, but Queen hasn't been a Batman clone for decades in the comics. It isn't a secret that CW wanted to make a Batman show after Smallville but ended up going with Arrow when they couldn't work out a deal which is why some elements seem like they are straight from Batman, including Batman villains.

The point remains that the GA character is at its core somewhat of a ripoff that operates in a similar "space" in terms of stories and types of antagonists. The apple is only going to fall so far from the tree.

The writers have certainly tapped into material primarily associated with Batman, but they've tapped into others too, and it's ALL part of the DC background. Hell, Felicity Smoak is associated with Firestorm. If GA's rogue's gallery and mythos were stronger, it'd be less necessary.

Consider that we're only at the top of season 3, and the show has already used most of GA's best villains (I'd argue that they've wasted a few). They've had to reboot Count Vertigo already. And it's not like comic writers haven't "stolen" other villains like Deathstroke, Solomon Grundy, Deadshot, etc. for their GA stories.

There may have been execs at CW asking their WB cousins for a Batman show, but note that it's WB/DC producing the show with Berlanti.

So you're unfamiliar with the Green Arrow of the comic for, oh say, the last fifty years or so. Noting the similarities doesn't make it a bad show suddenly, nor is it a secret that it was originally conceived as a Batman project. I'm glad they didn't go with that actually as it gives them more freedom but pretending it isn't there, or is an accident, seems dishonest or naive.

It's also no longer the Arrow Cave. It's the "Quiver" now. Harley renamed it in Injustice. Man, it's like you can't keep up with us über-nerds.

I have no idea how you drew that conclusion from that statement. The fact is that GA -- then and now -- operates in a much more similar space to Batman than to the many DC characters operating at a higher power level. And the comic writers HAVE "borrowed" villains to fill out GA's weak rogue's gallery. These criticisms of the show can also apply to the comics, and to ignore THAT is dishonest or naive.

Noting the similarities doesn't make it a bad show suddenly, nor is it a secret that it was originally conceived as a Batman project.
