I see that there are some upgrades that are only available in certain sets, and people actually buying 3-4 Lambda cruisers to get these upgrades?

Most players are pretty reasonable about the cards. They invented these things called printers and old people like me use copiers . I forget the site off the top of my head and I'm running out the door now, but it has all the cards listed to print out. Tournament wise your probably going to need actual cards though.

Give it time.

This is frighteningly true, especially once you start considering 150-200 pt games.

Well it would be fun to run a Lambda Lambda Lambda build, even if it wasn't competitive.

I've been wondering about this. I can't think of a reason that a sensible adult would mind using/playing against printed out cards for things like upgrades/crew members/missiles, but I don't know. Are there many people who would have a real problem with this, outside of tournament play?

I don't see a need to print them out even. Just make a list like in any other war game. The card is just a rules reference. If there is any question as to which ship has what, consult the list. The ships even come with numbers to identify them specifically for crying out loud.

Aptly said. I currently only have one lambda myself but ... I don't know ... for how much longer ...

I wouldn't mind if someone used a printed card to try it out.

I personally use what I own.

For tournaments, you have to own it.

Even for a tournament I wouldn't mind if you only owned one copy of a card and said "I made two copies to use today". If it became an issue I'm sure between all the guys we have around we could just lend you the extras push comes to shove. For casual games, print your list or write it down on paper, knock yourself out.

See as someone who would "want" more people to get into the game I'd definitely would allow the copies or proxies, but for a competitive tournament where there's real prizes then I'd say you'd have to have originals, whether they are yours or borrowed. I know a lot of people have limited budgets so copies of cards especially one from the big ships like advanced sensors are fine.even now as long as they have one copy of the original card just so I have the texts on them ready to look at is fine.

Also I just downloaded the battlescribe app which makes list building easy, so just having a copy to show and the app or a printed out list I fine.

yeah,
No one cares when you playing casual gaming.
tournaments are a different beast and if you use Proxies I wouldn't be surprised if TFG cries foul to get the win!

That said FFG demand that you need every copie of the card you plan to use.
They even go as far as providing duplicates of things like stealth in the the firespray box.

I think if you wait long enough the cards you want in the lambda box (advanced sensors?) will become available in other sets.

Panic...

This man is right. Realized this today when I picked up my Imperial Aces pack, it has two each of hull upgrade(Lambda I think) and Shield Upgrade(Millenium Falcon I think) plus Push the Limit.

Yeah. Imperial Aces has so many upgrade cards that I now just own all the cards I had initially wanted to proxy anyway! I still don't love the model FFG have going to distribute the cards, but they don't seem to be screwing us over as bad as some game companies might. The doubles in Aces and the Slave-1 pack go a long way to make this system workable.

Fantasy Flight flew under my radar for a looong time. After discovering this game, netrunner, and a few others, I can honestly say that by FAR, they have some of the best game design(rules), and product design(pieces, packaging, content) that I've ever seen. Only other company to meet this rating in my book is Mayfair Games. Players aren't excessively rewarded for buying a set of four of each expansion or wasting their money, and the more limited players who only buy on of each still have every viable option to play all the way to competition level, and aren't left out to dry. They give all the players the same access to pieces, then leave it up to their skill.

Honestly I played Magic:TG for fifteen years. Can't figure out why I wasted my time and money on Wizards now. Completely dropped their game.

Edit: that was weird lol

I really really like X-Wing and FFG are clearly good game designers. However, when you see the difficulty they seem to have keeping product in stock, and if we see them running out of design space for X-Wing, and you remember that this game has only been around for a year and a half and there is no guarantee that they can keep this up, I suspect you'll remember why WotC (and Magic in particular) has been king of the hill for so very long. X-Wing is great, but let's not go overboard.

Wizards does have longevity, no joke, no doubt. And not to argue, but I'm a believer that any game has an infinite design space if your creative enough, and willing to find it or make it. There's the possibility however of at what point (if any) do you have too many expansion boxes and blisters on the shelf that new players are overwhelmed, or you can't feasibly produce the whole line simultaneously (like now maybe). Or simply, did the game just get 'old' despite every possible advantage it might have. Lots of possibilities, just pointing out a few. Not necessarily any of them will ever be true.

Wizards is good at making money, and keeping you on the hook. That's the sum of it to me. King of the hill? Yeah. Worthy of it? You decide. I say *shrug* "IMHO, Maybe not". Fantasy's games are just too inviting and player friendly to me. Here's to hoping Fantasy does keep this up. Great point bro-tomjoad.

Wizards lost me when they came out with the Mirrodin cycle. I just didn't enjoy the game anymore after that joke of a cycle came out. Tried dabbling after it ran its course, but couldn't really get back into it. I think most of FFG's LCGs are better than Magic, and I don't feel it's top of the heap anymore.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Heard that timetowaste85, to be honest Wizards really started to lose me when they broke down and made Planeswalker a card type in Lorwyn. Which, personal opinion here, they screwed up Planeswalkers design wise and fluff wise to the nth degree and continued to screw them up for some time. If it makes anyone feel better the next core set, 'M15', makes such 'brilliant' design advances as a new card frame/border art that only looks decent on black cards but looks like crap on all the rest, the addition of a (pointless) holographic mini stamp at the bottom of all rares and mythic rares, for the first time ever Magics own new official font which is officially named 'Beleren' after the gak awful poster boy Jace, and the exchange of awesome opportunities for flavor text on certain cards for selfish, self serving, grandstanding design credits! (i.e. some cards flavor text will read "This card designed by Mark Rosewater.", yes, this text officialy replaces the flavor text. I blame Spoils(tm))

Seriously!? You finally get your own 'official' font that will be used on cards starting the first full set printed after the Greek/Roman mythology set Theros, and you don't jump on the awesome and witty name 'Times New Theros'!? How about a little homage to the magic of yester-years and pick something sweet sounding like 'Tolarian Gothic'? Or my personal favorite, 'Urza's Chickenscrtaches'! GAAHH! Obviously I'm overly obsessed with the little things....sigh.

Any way,...what were we talking about again? Star Wars? Right, got it, I'm back now. haha lol

I really do not understand why people think you need a card to equip it. To me, that's like insisting you have a codex for each troop squad. The cards are just rule references. Even in a tournament, you should be able to just write a list for your numbered ships.

I see what you did there...

Everyone understands why FFG is having stock problems with this game? It is outselling every other miniature game except 40k...

FFG has a lot of room as far as expansions to this game. It also seems that FFG has the entire Extended Universe to work with here... Tie Phantoms from the comics... Tie Defenders and the HWK from the early video games. It wouldnt surprise me to see the Clone Wars era ships, etc some day. I just hope that they split the eras... like Battlefront does with Flames of War.

Aside about designers in Magic... Maro has said on a variety of different media that it would be too hard to credit individual designers for magic cards. Not only is the design a team effort, but there is also development that works on each card.

Also its a sad truth about design credits. There is a foot note article(verbatim from the original DailyMTG article) HERE They do mention M15 specifically so maybe the next block wont have them? Time will tell
