Love the game and love the time period. Discovered it last summer and managed to make three 4-point warbands for the Vikings, Welsh and Anglo-Danes using the Gripping Beast plastic models.
Unfortunately been spending time with 40k again recently, may have to get it out and start playing again.

Is there a plastics manufacturer to avoid with these?

Well, I'd say that depends. I like the scaling on WGF figures, but they are difficult to assemble in natural poses. On the other hand, GB figures are easy to assemble and look grand, but have some slightly chunkier scaling for heads and weapons (nothing awful though-I actually really like the models I have from them).
Conquest Games are a little between the two there, the only disappointment with them was the lack of archers for their norman infantry.
Fireforge are closer to GW proportions on the miniatures, especially the weapons. They look cool, but when put next to realistically scaled minis they might look out of place. I'm okay with explaining it as the Knightly Orders having access to the biggest and best bred warhorses, and looking beefier in their heavier armour.

Do it they're a good price and its a lot of fun. And if you buy the Gripping beast plastic boxes you can do a warband for £20!

The new Crusades release for the game is due out later this month. The original plan was to have the book for sale at Salute, but apparently there were some last minute problems. Instead, it'll go on sale later this month. While the Crusader lists are fully compatible with the existing SAGA lists, the book "The Crescent & The Cross" will apparently include a full set of rewritten rules (for greater clarification), along with the battle boards for six factions -
Crusaders
Christian Religious Orders
Reconquista
Saracens
Moors
Islamic Religious Orders (can't remember the name off the top of my head)
The Crusader and Saracen starters were available at Salute, and included enough reading material to let people play them without the new rule book. New dice have also been released, one set for Christians, and one set for Islam. Gripping Beast is, of course, providing full support as far as miniatures are concerned. And that support includes a new box of dismounted plastic Saracens.

I'm pretty interested by The Crescent and The Cross book, The crusades have all ways interested me but I've never really wanted to paint hundreds of models for it! Looks like now I can get away with painting around 40 or so!

Hell, with all the existing ranges they've got, the new supplement was already well catered for.

Yeah, I've yet to see anything released for SAGA that they don't already have a range for. But the new plastic Saracens provide a less expensive way of filling out your list.
And if you don't quite like what they've got, there are plenty of other manufacturers out there as well.
