As expected... the new GW Website doesn't have the area where BloodBowl, Necromunda, BFG etc game downloads were. I hope everyone got the files they needed when they had the chance.

Well, it doesn't have the FAQs either. Still dunno if that means they haven't gotten around to them, or if they've just given up all together.

They're bound to be still available online somewhere. Hell I grabbed them myself as soon as I heard there was a planned website reboot, I've half a mind to stick them in a mediafire folder or something.

Well, I've had pretty much all of the Inquisitor files in a Mediafile folder for years - and that includes those they took off their site almost a decade ago. There's only a few minor files I know I'm missing, but they're all things like mocked-up newspapers that went with the campaign books.

There are almost certainly archives for the other Specialist games out there. The problem is, they're no longer as easily found through the GW site.

Some i archived in my email; others are on my friend's hard drive. Soon as i can i'll backup on my cloud and flash drive. Some BFG materials are free to download from 4shared.com. Try different search terms, as results do vary.

This has a lot of fans rules on it. If your after the live rule book (I know its not on games workshop site at the moment), I have a copy.

4shared accounts are free, easier to make than google accounts, and gives you 15GB on the free account to easily copy files you like (pdf, mp3, mp4, doc, etc...) and upload your own files.

Thank you Horizon, for your efforts! Sadly i am google-challenged but that is due to google chose to suck instead of rock (short & polite ver.). You are many shades of awesome!!
In addition to backing up my pdfs in my email, i'll also have them on 4shared, yahoo groups (tbd) & my cloud on adrive.com.

The bigger problem is distribution rights. The files for any number of things are available without any real problem but they're not being made available by people who actually have the right to do so, if that makes sense?

Say you'd written a book - you could give out as many copies as you felt like as by creating it you'd own the distribution rights.
On the other hand if you buy a book and friend wants a photocopy of it. Sure, no one's going to physically stop you, but that doesn't mean you have the right to do so.

GW hosting the files on their site meant that whenever anyone asked for the files we could just point them to GW. They definitely own the rights and so if they want to offer the files they're allowed to.

Call me pessimistic, but I think GW just wants them to be dead and gone. Even the slightest interest cuts into the purchasing of the latest 40K release.

The new website is their easy out to completely cut ties.

I know at least for Epic: Armageddon, the fan support far outstrips anything the GW of the last ten years could muster.

True - it is, technically, little different from putting the latest pop record into a torrent.
I'm sure there was some kind of "use agreement" on a lot of the files when I first downloaded them, but it's impossible to access these days (as a lot of the site since they put in a "set country" page is inaccessible via the Wayback Machine).

I'm not desperately scared though. Sure, GW may send through a C&D or its like, but as long as it's complied with, I doubt I'm at risk of actually picking up any criminal charges.

Well, there's no sales cannibalisation involved, seeing as buyers have only the core ranges to purchase from any more (if they're buying GW).

In any case, the Inquisitor 28mm crowd have a habit of buying into nearly every new release. Over the past year, the new Eldar, Dark Elves and Astra Militarum IMPERIAL GUARD have been very popular.

I'm quite sure that the sales team at GW thinks that even if people are only able to get Specialist Games products off sites like Ebay, those are dollars being spent elsewhere that could be spent on the newest 40K releases. So they are doing their level best to make sure that any new converts to GW products have the hardest time possible seeing any other "officially sanctioned" options than Fantasy and 40K.

GW has always seemed to have had this same love/hate relationship with Specialist Games. Even when they were being released as brand new IP products, it never ceased to amaze me how they would go full-force at the initial release as a cash grab, and then let the game basically completely stagnate before an entire year was through. The entire subsection of Specialist Games was created through that same action! Some of the game staff were such big fans of the games, they were able to get their own little backwater section of the site to keep supporting them.

They probably realized even back then that with 40K it was possible to give it too much competition with products from the exact same company, which is pretty sad.

I have edited out a bunch of links in this thread. As a reminder folks, DakkaDakka does not (and can not) endorse copyright infringement, and so direct links to infringing material are not allowed.

The fact that GW are no longer offering these rules doesn't make them fair game... it's up to GW as the copyright owner to choose how and when (or if, in this case) they are distributed.

Or to outright kill them and slapping long-time supporters in the face, evidently.

But then again, it's probably a slap in the face to them when online fan-communities can make a game they own go further than they can and/or are willing to, even more thana decade after release/discontinue.

I said I'd do it, so I did, here's everything that used to be on the website before the wipe (also Gorkamorka, because why not?)

EDIT: nevermind, just read insaniak's post above. Don't want to be getting into trouble now.

Good thing I already own the hardcover copy of the Necromunda/Outlanders book. I was not all too shocked when they cut all ties with the Specialist Games section, heck just a few years ago they had started the cut down and shrinking of the Specialist Games ranges. It was sadly only a matter of time before GW did what they do best, and that is insult those willing to give them money.

I would like to point out following for the link I posted for Epic. NetERC (people behind the website, of which I was part of back then) specifically asked for permission from JJ for keeping Epic rules online for our own distribution and got it. With this in mind, can I repost the link?

Would be not too far off to now say 'Games' Workshop now as little to no games?

Also glad I downloaded both all the things for Nercomunda and Mordhiem onto my flash drive, so I might make some copies for a few of my gaming buddies who play with me.

If you're going to do that why does it matter where the files are from? One might as well torrent them in that case.

I'm not advocating torrenting them, I'm just pointing out that the fact that you got them from GW's site doesn't make it any more legal to share them with friends than if you'd got them from a shadier source.

Morally, it puts you in a much better position. These files were produced with the specific purpose that they would be given to anyone who wanted them, for free, whenever they felt like popping over to download them. That Games Workshop 2014 moved servers and stopped hosting them does not change the fact that for ten years they were explicitly a public good available to all.

If someone printed a copy of the latest 40k FAQ, nobody would make the argument that because it is not currently being hosted on the Games Workshop website this is copyright infringement, right?

No. It should not be any more wrong to share the files for any of the Specialist games product downloads than to share the files for the latest 40K FAQ. The are not pirated copies to get around buying the games- they are copies of a file that was directly and freely distributed by the actual parent company for that exact purpose- for people to have a free copy of the rules because they were no longer bothering to sell them.

No one is circumventing GW, because they have been free for years.

I agree with AlexHolker on this. The only reason I am giving the PDFs as digital to friends is because I cannot really physically print out copies for them for the time being, and they were kind of curious for them. Not saying I am going to host them at all, I just wanted to get that information and that to my friends that wanted if they did not get a chance to download them and print it out there.

Printing off the PDF's personal usage should not be breaking any laws, but it would be very much different if I was planning to host and share the files or if I printed them off and tried to sell them. Even then, the files were published online for free to an extent.

I'm pretty sure you can't host the files online because you aren't the owning company, but yeah, the files were posted to specifically be free for personal use and distribution after download. For of distribution should not matter as long as it's private, not public.

Not that GW bothered to make effort to put a free-use disclaimer on their downloads, but as far as I know they are in effect the same as the "free to photocopy for personal use" template disclaimers in the rulebooks.

Printed it for themselves? No. Hosted it on their own site, yes.

 AlexHolker wrote:

Morally we can do whatever we feel is right, legally we're bound by rather more restrictive rules. Personally I feel no guilt in sharing scans of old WD articles but legally it's still not okay. I'm not trying to stop anyone sharing anything - I'm just highlighting that the files were not distributed under a license that specifically allowed us to share them. I don't think anyone's going to be on the receiving end of legal attention but it seemed sensible to bring up the subject and dispel some misconceptions. In general it's not something we as wargamers have that good a grasp on and so GW can tell us their take on the law without us knowing any better. Their new site's legal section is at least less brainwashy, thankfully.

PM me the link and I will look into it. We would need some sort of confirmation that they have permission to distribute the files.

It would be close to accurate.

I hate the whole "They have to run a business" spiel I hear. The issue is that GW has focused only on numbers of profit instead of quality and it is starting to show with the profit margin dropping 25% in just one quarter.
Anybody who understands sales must realize how much of a punch that is to the company. Now stores are shelving a large amount of products that don't sell as well as the main army's such as Space Marines.

Besides, the GW brick and mortar stores are getting rid of the products that don't sell as well as the main lines. Remember the last time that happened? *cough Sisters of Battle cough* Fact of the matter is that GW is all about numbers nowadays. Doesn't matter how much we complain, it will remain that way.

TOO MUCH CHAOS!!!

Hello there necromancer.
First, dreadfleet is not a specialist game, it's a one-off board game that flopped big time.

Space hulk, again, not a specialist game, one-off board game they did a couple times.

The games with lines that were supported and not super-limited would be things like Mordheim, epic, etc.

From what I had heard the 'Specialist Games' would have been gone years ago. JJ offered to keep up all the maintenance of them off his own back (in addition to his core job at the company) so they could remain on the site.

So, I suppose it was lucky that they were still available for as long as they were (free downloads?! GW?! what the feth?! )
