Bulletproof Subways A Sign Of Violent Times?
April 24, 2014 10:07 AM
CHICAGO (CBS) — While out on an unrelated assignment, CBS 2 investigative reporter Dave Savini decided to stop by a South Side Subway sandwich shop for a meal.
Savini was struck by the fact that the counter of the store at 116th Street and South Halsted was encased in bullet-proof glass.
Such a sight would be common at crime magnets like gas stations or currency exchanges, but a Subway?
The store was clean and looked just like any other well-run Subway restaurant, except for the bullet-proof protection for the employees and lack of a bathroom for customers.
https://twitter.com/davesavinicbs2/status/459318237809737729/photo/1
In fact, a few patrons asked for hand sanitizer because they couldn’t wash their hands.
Savini took a few photos and sent out a tweet, saying the scene was a sad depiction of gun violence in Chicago:
The restaurant is located on the border of the Roseland and West Pullman neighborhoods, which has seen its share of gang violence.
However, according to a Chicago Tribune analysis, crime in those areas recently has declined.
Nonetheless, both communities rank in the top 15 in Chicago for violent crime.
Savini also posted his photos on Facebook, where one user remarked that there is a similar set up at a Subway in the Austin neighborhood.
An internet search also found a few bulletproof Subways in Oakland and Detroit.

I applaud those franchise owners for taking those steps to ensure employee safety. I also wonder if there was a crime or anything at those locations or if its a precautionary measure

Stuff like this is common in parts of Southern California. Back in the day, I saw a KFC that had bank teller style windows and no inside customer seating area.

I've seen it a few times in convenience stores in LA and once in Houston.
Its common in the old one man no entrance gas stations (original Robocop for reference).

Yeah, there is bulletproof glass and the same "carousel" for handing in payment / getting the food at some restaurants in Baltimore. But not too many, and I certainly hadn't seen one at a Subway, so this does have a bit of shock value!

It's interesting to me that the drink fridge is outside the glass, though

The building was probably something else before it was a subway, and when subway moved in there wasn't any room. It's common in New York City as well. Lots of places have no space to sit down, let alone fit a restroom.

Have you guys not heard about the massive amount of shootings in the past week?

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2014/04/21/7-dead-37-wounded-in-weekend-shootings/

It is not making national news because:
1. It is minorities getting shot and no one cares about 'gang violence'
2. It doesn't fit the gun control agenda

Well, that is why they have bullet-proof subways in Chicago... Because there is lots of gun violence. It is nice they are protecting their employees but sad commentary on the state of Chicago.

Must be a slow news day down Chicago way. Maybe I'm just jaded, but I didn't see a taxi without a bulletproof partition until I moved to the midwest.

What an age we liven in, I guess.

PS, that image macro was not a knock on Frazzled for posting it, it was on the media for even writing such a banal story.

Oh I'm a Chicagoan as well, and there is in fact a decreased level of police surveillance at the Subways in the south loop area and the south side.

Downtown you get 4 or 5 officers at the main ones and in uptown as well, but south side nothing.

Kind of crappy. Also, I have eaten at that Subway.

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

The shootings have been all over the news. Drugs, gang violence, etc. A 15 year old was shot by 2 other teenagers in North Chicago last weekend over drugs and his money on-hand. Sad.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Since moving to North of Chicago, I've seen about as many places with bullet proof glass here as I saw in Houston (mostly convenience stores and gas stations, in-town and bad neighborhoods.

Nah, if there WAS a joke about "your mom", the "footlong" would cost a nickel, not $5.

CL VI Store in at the Cyber Center of Excellence

When I worked at/managed a Subway (not in Chicago) we used to feed cops for free. It encouraged them to come in, and provided a LE presence or at least possibility of a presence which was a good thing when you were open until 0100-0200 and may be in the store even later.

Did the same at a Domino's I worked at. That served the same purpose, and had the added benefit that unless one of the drivers was being a complete asshat, the likely hood of them getting pulled over for speeding while on a run seemed diminished.

Knowing the people who staff the Domino's around here, the ability to ask "You a cop?" without arousing suspicion or having good odds the person would lie to you would probably be an asset as well.

Do my eyes deceive me or is that a little hatch that can be lowered by employees to return fire?

What if this escalates? What if would be robbers start walking around in boxes made of bullet proof glass?

Jokes aside, as somebody that loves America (especially the junk food) it makes me sad to see things like that.

Yeah junk food.

Here's my typical subway order:

12 inch white bread = low fibre, high in sugar and salt

Cheese = high in salt and saturated fat

Meatballs = high in salt and saturated fat, plus excessive red meat increases my chance of bowel cancer

So yeah, junk food!

Sure, I could add some onions or God forbid, lettuce, but it's an American chain, so I eat American style.

I was referencing South Park (historical context )

Nah I don't eat Subway much. Sometimes I get a breakfast sub with some eggs and ham but other than that I'm not a frequenter.

Their bread is aweful. If I'm gonna pay for a sandwich, I'll go to Panera Bread. At least the bread there is good. EDIT: And they don't smoother my sandwish with enough mayo and mustard to rub a $5 hooker from head to toe.
