So which would you consider bringing on in a raven to drop and cause devastation? I am debating between a tactical squad kitted out with melta, combi-melta, and multimelta, or a squad of sternguard. I have also had luck recently with attaching a venerable dreadnought with heavy flamer and plasma cannon, so I will probably stick with that unless there is something way better. Also I have considered attaching a ML2 Librarian or a Techmarine with servo-harness to the squad. Any thoughts on these units in a raven for a general list that would be decent against any army? Do I have too many eggs in one basket? I have not played very competitively, but I am considering entering in my first tournament within the next couple of months. Any feedback on tactics for Skies of Fury would be excellent. Thank you for your time.

This post makes me so mad! I play Iron Hands and I use a storm raven! ONLY I CAN START THREADS WITH THE TWO COMBINED AS THE TOPIC!!!!

Haha, seriously though, good question. I personally have used 5 shotgun scouts in them as a last-minute objective grabber. Here is a thread made a week or so ago about it: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/591348.page
Slightly off topic is the decision to take iron hands flyers or the formation. Big thread but the overwhelming majority and the best reasons were to take the fliers as iron hands and not the formation. Here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/589407.page

SO! To your question at hand. I think using a regular dreadnought is a gross misuse of the storm raven, especially a venerable dreadnought. I would use an ironclad with two heavy flamers if you are ganna go that route. You can throw out two heavy flamer templates all with AV13 and get 4 str 10 ap1 attacks on the charge with a special weapon. I don't know what the rest of your army is so I can't really give much more advice, if I knew the list I could give a lot more.

Assault marines are quite a good choice as it is an assault veichle they can leave it, shoot, then assault. Vanguard vets are also good choices as they have more access to special combat weapons.

Hmmm I like the idea of the ironclad even though I feel a plasma cannon venerable brings alot to the table. Since it mght come in 2nd turn I'd like to bring something that can hold it's own for a bit as I will most likely deep strike whatever I bring when it comes on. I will not go into hover mode to deploy what's inside probably so the unit needs to have some ranged firepower to hold them over until they either decide to assault or sit back and pick off troops.

I really like grav cannon centurions. The stormraven flies on, gets within MM range, skies of fury the centurions, and the results are always a lot of damage to the opponent.

A small unit of scouts is also pretty good for a last turn objective grab.

I generally don't put anything of value in my BA stormraven--it's too risky. Str 10 hits is bad news...

That said, the Scouts "last minute objective grabber" is a great tactic.

5000 pts High Elves 4000 pts, Warriors of Chaos 4000 pts, Dwarfs 3000 pts, Wood Elves and Greenskins too

Only if you don't skies of fury when it comes on the board. Then the unit will not stay in the stormraven long enough for it to be shot at (not even intercept fire).

My thoughts exactly. The grav centurions sound pretty awesome as welll. Hmmm i might have to pick some up.

Not to derail the thread, but just a confirmation that grav centurions are a great addition here. Definitely one of the top 5 units available to the astartes nowadays. I have only been able to use mine twice now, but they have made more than their points back each time. Just gotta remember they have no invul so if you plan to drop them in range of a target, it would be a good idea to get them a cover or invul save via an attached IC or something. Otherwise your opponent will kill them dead the next turn.

Grav centurions would be good, however if you are facing tau with intercept I would have a squad of cheap scouts instead. Dont want your grav getting hit while in a blast formation.

Assault cannon/TH,SS Termies and a MoTF with a servitor : )

Skys of fury those termies when it comes in and then fly around with the MoTF and servitor and reign fire on the board while repairing it to keep it alive!

You cannot put both of those units into a single transport. It is also a waste as the terminators could have DS with less risk without the stormraven.

Is there a rule somewhere that says you cant put two different squads in a transport? I always figured if it had enough capacity you were good.

Yes.

Ah, so you'd have to run the MOTF as IC and forgo the servitors.
