New update, and this is a fun one, I think. How to make your own Necron army for Epic.

I'm curious as to the reasoning for the round bases. Is it just for convenience? I am getting back into epic but I will be playing 2nd edition and I am not a big fan of the last 2 editions of the game.

The round bases on what? Actually, it doesn't matter. In the version of Epic that I play (Epic Armageddon), basing is a matter of preference, within reason. I have no idea if there are rules around basing for 2nd ed Epic.

Interesting stuff.

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. It's because we are what we are. For all our faults we stand for law and light.

I've noticed a recent trend to base epic scale on round bases. Most examples are from the various facebook groups. I was just curious as to the reasoning. Since I have figures from all editions I have my armies on both square and rectangular bases.

Round seem to be easier to come by. You can get the 5 man rec ones but they are from the UK. (Don't like to wait that long being in US). I bought up as many rec ones as I could. Hate the square ones unless it is a single fig on it. They are to clumped up to paint. For Dark Eldar and Eldar, I am using round and some rec for the troops. Mostly because I ran out of square and the Dark Eldar army I bought was already on round.

Rules for epic Armageddon for base size is

A stand may be no more than 40mm and no less than 5mm
across in any direction.
• A stand must be at least 20mm across in one direction (ie, a
5mm by 5mm stand is not allowed, but a 5mm by 20mm
stand would be okay).

Yeah the Eldar Avatar too.

I put quite a few of my E:A Imperial Guard models on round bases simply for aesthetics.

1P Coins suited the look of Sentinels and 2P coins were good for Rough Riders. Infantry stayed on the standard long bases which I think were a big improvement on the old square ones. I even got some extra boxes of those when Specialist Games packed up.

Great stuff for necrons though. Can you keep us updated on the Tesseract vault and list pieces used? I have the rest of the army but thats the one part I am having trouble with converting

Ok, now I understand the question about round bases - Bakhara, you meant the infantry and not the vehicles, correct?

Vehicles aren't required to be based at all, as you probably already know. Some of the other guys here have already answered pretty sufficiently, but I'll just confirm. Yes, these days round bases are somewhat easier to come by. The long rectangular ones are second easiest to find, and the square ones hardest to find of all.

I currently have two painted armies and I am working on a third. For the two complete armies I have, (Loyalist Marines and Chaos Marines), the Loyalists are on the long rectangle bases and the Chaos Marines are on round bases. This choice was deliberate for me, and I'll explain why as succinctly as I can. It's hard to fully appreciate until you have played a few games with either style base, but in game terms, it's far better to have your troops on the rectangular bases. There are a lot more "shenanigans" you can pull with the long bases (and I used the term "shenanigans" loosely here, as the rules in E:A are so tight that almost nothing feels "gamey").

The Space Marines, who really are a "finesse" army in E:A and require very precise tactics to win with consistently, almost need to be on the rectangular bases. And, for me, this fits in with their role as an asymmetric warfare elite force that relies on cunning and "dirty tricks" to achieve objectives.

Chaos Space Marine forces, on the other hand, tend to be looser collections of cut-throats, malcontents, and every-man-for-himself types that don't operate with the scalpel-like precision of the loyalists. So, in addition to their lack of the "And They Shall Know No Fear" special rule, I wanted to represent this relative lack of cohesion by having them on the less-efficient round bases. So my decision to put my CSM on round bases was kind of a self-imposed nerf. It was also an aesthetic choice. The round bases take up more table space, making the force appear much more horde-like and disorganized.

The third army I'm working on? Cadians. The bases? You guessed it. Square! This is primarily an aesthetic decision for me, but it's also because I think the square bases probably function in-game somewhere between round and rectangular.

TL;DR Rectangular bases are by far the most efficient from a gameplay standpoint, but people base their models differently for reasons such as availability, aesthetic, or theme.

Rectangular bases should be available from Steel Crown for those interested.

Bakhara, I've seen some of your other posts and it looks like you are into tournament play. Totally not trying to proselytize here, but if you are interested in a tight ruleset for competitive play, Epic Armageddon is universally regarded as the tighter and more balanced ruleset. I personally feel it's the tightest rule set that GW ever came up with. However, I can definitely see the viewpoint that it is not as "robust" or "fun" as the 2nd edition rules. It can feel a bit Spartan at times. I also see that you're in Pasadena, which isn't so far. We have about 15 or so people here in LA who play Epic, but all of us play under the Armageddon rules.

Correct. I play alot of tournament in 40K. Epic was what brought me into GW games and that was long before there was any tournament scene. I'll still take a look at E:A and maybe try it out.

Thanks

Str00dles, sorry I forgot to answer your question. No progress on the Tesseract Vault, sadly. That guy works in the video games industry and just got a job with a major publisher that has him putting in crazy hours... not sure when he will be able to get around to it. But he will, eventually.
