Pretty much this.
Seems to detract from the actual building an army list part of the game when you just plug in 1 special character, and then adhere to his rules and play style, not your own.

Although, special characters are banned in my gaming group, as well as first blood.

I miss the sense of humor and zaniness from the earlier incarnations of the game, when Noise Marines had rock guitars and you could use your penal legion troopers as bombs. I miss the Mentor Legion having access to battlefield time travel and other forms of absolute insanity. I miss when the game wasn't supposed to make sense, and was more about creating a feeling than trying to make the Imperium seem like it could plausibly happen -- or worst, that it's actually desirable or noble in any sense.

The Rogue Trader era will always be the heart of the game to me.

I dont know what days you are talking about.

Back in the day, everyone with a power weapon could slice terminators in half, and even further back, storm shields only gave you a 4++ invuln.....and only in cc.

Terminators are becoming more survivable with every edition. It's just the power creep all around them that no longer makes them stand out. That, and the introduction of grav weaponry

I take it you don't remember the days when terminator armour was a 3+ save on 2d6, and a power weapon was (at best) a -6 armour save modifier? Actually, I think a power sword was -3 and a power ax was -2; lascannon and genestealer claws were -6.

Outside of Kill Teams, how would this even work?

Almost every army's HQ choices are ICs

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Ah, I didnt go that far back lol. 2nd edition, right? sounds really cool. I definitely like the concept of 2D6 armor saves. The current armor save system is quite pathetic, really, with 5+ and 6+ armor being ignored by 90% of weapons out there. If Eldar Guardians had an 9+ armor save and bolters were AP8, it would be quite fun.

This isn't true, though. Fluff for regiments increased greatly from the 3.5 ed codex and 5th ed.

Oh gods... only someone who never had to play against them would wish this doom on mankind again.

BlaxicanX wrote:I miss something that my nostalgia tells me was really awesome when it probably wasn't at the time.

Or, I miss something that was absurdly cheesy that helped me win without effort. It was nice when that uber-unit took the fear of losing out of the game.

Anyways, the one structural thing I miss is the old by-unit rules (by-unit cover, by-unit wound allocation, by-unit movement restrictions, etc.). It made it so that units had more meaning. Nowadays, they're just collections of models with an arbitrary 2" coherency as an anachronistic throwback to an earlier age. The way we have it now is cool for all-hero armies where those individual models are all super badasses, but things were better when piles of mooks had more meaning. Of course, meta changes haven't helped this either.

Otherwise, what I really miss is green tides. I never played one myself, but I always really liked playing against them on those rare opportunities I had to do so. They were so iconic, and a symbol of the crazy head-on-suicide charge that might just succeed despite the odds that was part of the soul of 40k. And now they're gone, just like assault armies and horde armies. 40k should still allow for hormagaunt armies and power blobs without it being little more than a tedious exercise in futility.

on the forum. Obviously

I miss monolith deepstrike protection

I miss pariahs

I miss the terrain guides and modelling articles in the codices / army books.

I miss the alternate army lists in the codices / army books (see: Southlands army list in Lizardmen 6th ed)

I miss those little tactical articles in the codices / army books

I miss 4th ed wound allocation, back when it was simple and straight forward

I miss there not being any ally shenanigans. Back in my day, a tau player was a tau player. Not a taudarquisitor player.

I miss there being no hull points and having to rely on purely chance to hit.

I miss being able to move up to 6" in assault.

I miss seeing the website as more hobby friendly (at least in my opinion).

I miss not having to separate army lists into fluffy or cheesy.
