No, it's not the worst, it is simply the most simple explanation.
Everything. Every. Single. Thing.GW do is geared towards manipulating their customers into buying more of their gak. Which is fine, they're a commercial enterprise after all, except they're exceptionally clumsy about it. Which, when one considers some of the rumours that leak out from time to time, or even outright statements made under oath on public record, makes sense because several key members of senior management don't appear to hold the customer base in very high regard, so they probably think we're collectively dumb enough to fall for their bull gak.
The sad fact is, I think enough people may be feckless enough to fall for it to continue to support it for some time yet, but the GW that used to have at least a few people who were gamers first and money vampires at least second, would have made this as a game with punch out counters, and perhaps just a suggestion that you could use models instead.
They could have provided free figures to play the game too...
All things considered, some extra content in the form of a "free" game is welcome. I certainly see your argument, and I think the root of your argument touches on the problematic way GW has treated its customers so that any move on their part can easily be attributed to greedy malice, but sometimes a free game is a free game, at least for me. In this Schrodinger's Cat experiment I am choosing to believe the game is free and not a sales gimmick.
Azreal13 wrote: LOL, Symphony of Pain, a free game that only requires the purchase of £37.00 of models to play!
(Yeah, I know, one could simply use paper counters if one wanted, but that clearly isn't the motivation for GW in printing it. )
I'm all for cynicism, it's one of my favourite past times, but isn't that a smidge much?
White Dwarf wrote:You will need; five Wracks and a Haemonculous per player
I'm all for balanced criticism, I think the frothing negative "Haters" do a lot of damage by drowning out valid criticism and providing apologists something to rail against without needing any real substance to their arguments, but in this case, they really are expecting you to have over £70 of models to have a game.
Now, there are ways of playing the game that wouldn't require this which are so fething obvious that I ask people not to spend pages pointing them all out, but the fact is that is what the magazine is encouraging people to do, and like I said, trying to encourage your customers to buy your stuff is fine, I'd rather they did it in a way that was a little more sophisticated.
with all due respect, your ranting about this mini-game is making my eyes roll harder than anything else on the internet this week.
what Dark Eldar player doesnt have 5 wracks and a haemy?
you dont have them? dont like the new models? dont want to buy them? dont then.
if you want to play Symphony of Pain SO BAD and you just cant handle buying the minis than use your space marines. or coins. or belly button lint. whatever floats your boat.
its a fun little novelty they made up for anyone who is bored and wants to roll some dice.
THOSE BASTARDS SHOULD BE GIVING YOU THE FREE WRACKS AND HAEMY AS A THANK YOU!!!
what's your deal?
if you don't like it, then don't buy it. stop bringing down the excitement with your GW bitching.
I'm puzzled how you're getting "ranting" from what I've written?
Surely I've just made a fairy reasonable point based on a combination of the facts of commerce, personal experience and other evidence?
If this weren't my last topic on the subject to prevent the thread devolving massively off topic into another GW is a gak company thread, I'd be interested to see how you've manged to put so much emotion behind what I've written.
EDIT
For anyone playing Dakka bingo, you can check off the "well, if you don't like it, don't buy it, but you're not allowed to criticise it" fallacy box.

Yeah I have to agree with DT there Az, I mean I love slagging GW off as much as the next man, but I do think your starting to kick the arse out of it a bit now.

I like more Dark Eldar flyers a sweet as the current one - a bomber would be great...........after the Space Wolf flyer which I also really liked I am a little hopeful
I would much rather have had a Lady Malys model than Wracks and Horms............ah well - I can use the Wrath of Kings models as her and her retinue when they finally arrive.

I like his hair a lot more than those flipper feet. Could make him an amputee I suppose. Wouldn't really miss em with his current mode of movement.

They would probably use "From the Warp" for them. It's almost certainly the rumored Voidraven kit.

I was going to say I'm looking forward to seeing the new hardback codex and the new models...
That is UNTIL:
1. GW remove several of the units I've bought, built and painted totally from existence.
2. GW remove a unit I use and add it into a "dataslate" and charge me another 10 quid for.
3. GW do both of the above.
It happened with my Grey Knights and I've refused to buy that new Codex and the models are now packed away not to be played for another edition or 3. :-(
My wife was the one that played Dark Eldar, until the current Codex stole away her beloved "Kruellagh the Vile" rules, and had no options to even make a HQ unit her figure could represent. The change to the way the old Mandrakes moved around made that unit so boring as well - even though the new models were better.
Awaiting the new DE Codex with nerves...
Currently most played: Silent Death, Mars Code Aurora, Battletech, Warcrow and Infinity.
Breotan wrote: Coming from the Void could easily refer to 'Nids as well.
Yes, but when else could GW's "alliteration" department get to be used? They already did such a good job with the Murderfang Murderclaw Murdersaurus from the Space Wolves.
What comes from the Void? Well...a Void Bomber! Dropping Void Bombs! Plus an Elvis--I mean, Eldaanesh word that translates exactly to "void". Pure. Genius.
