As we have had so many negative threads so far i feel that it is time to lighten the atmosphere.
Ladies and Gentlemen i give you the best battle report thread.
Personally, i think the best one was from an old WD that i do not have with me, but it featured Skaven fighting Bugmans Brewers. The Skaven eventually won, using the sneaky tactic (Tactical genius move-CRREEEEEDDD!) of teleporting a clanrat into the main dwarven gun-line unit. This gave them the opportunity to close with the bearded things and assault them.
One of the best bits though was that the Skaven player was using green jelly baby's as warp tokens.
Im sorry i cant post the whole thing but ill try to later.
Anyway, whats yours?

For me its either the Big Armageddon one (and if anyone has links to scans of them / got the WDs going cheap let me know as I really want to re-read it again) or the one based on Rorke's Drift with the Praetorians and Adrian Wood's Orks.
Both brilliant reports.

I think there was one here on Dakka that involved a poster playing Dark Vengeance. It was short, but personally, I still really enjoy it. What was it called again? Dark Verngernce I think?
WD wise, I think there was one issue when the game developers were playing against the editors for three battle reports, one per game.

Best Battle Report Ever:
Gotta give White Dwarf credit for this one: Issue 222 "Last Stand at Glazer's Creek," I've got the issue in a box somewhere still. Orks vs Praetorians, essentially re-fighting the Zulu Vs British hold-out battle at Rourke's Drift. A really nice backstory, a well crafted scenario and incredibly flavorful battle report that drew heavily on the movie "Zulu". The issue even gives stats and info for some scenario-specific special characters.
It was my dream for many years to refight this one. Never happened, but maybe someday.
I've actually heard of this battle being done at conventions by individuals cleverly calling it the battle of "Ork's Drift".

A second shout out for Last Stand at Glazer's Creek.
It was a special scenario and had randomly generated Ork forces per turn.
An Imperial Guard rule recalled the scene from 'Zulu' where Chard is triaging his casualties and getting them either back on the wall or off to Surgeon Reynolds. Basically that turn's casualties were rolled off at the end of the turn to decide if they were fighting fit (back to duty), wounded (located to the hospital building where they could fight from with reduced stats) or dead.
The developers liked it that much the scenario was regenerated in the Citadel Journal but with Mordians instead (I believe the Praetorians were no longer being produced at that stage).

A link to a review of WD 187 with good coverage of the "Heretic!" battle report that I mentioned earlier. Definitely one of my all time favourites.....

That certainly was a great one!
Also have fond memories of the report that accompanied the launch of 2nd edition (Captain Tycho got knocked by a Weirdboy in a psychic assault, which then became part of the background in future Blood Angels codexes - extremely cool!)
There was a great thread over on the Infinity forums with lots of really cool photoshopped images, but sadly the photos are not showing on it..

Yeah, I thought of that one too. That was the one where they used all the studio tanks in one game (though by modern standards it isn't as impressive).
One of my favorite Battle Reports was the one they did for WD #200, featuring the White Dwarf Special Character. It was a really good scenario. I don't even play fantasy and it's still one of my favorites.

The previously mentioned Rorke's Drift was a good one, very well done and the scenario seemed balanced.
I don't have issue numbers handy, but I liked the introductory report for the Schaeffer's Last Chancers, where they basically played out the Dirty Dozen movie.
The entire Escher gang campaign (think it was 3 or 4 reports in total) was fun, going from a basic gang to one being raided by Arbiters.

The 2 big Praetorian ones. Some one linked the white dwarf one, but there was also an open day one in which an ork horde destroyed the Tallarn and Praetorian forces. Had an awesome background and what happened to survivors etc. I think that was the birth of the Praetorians too.
I cant find the link that had this battle, only the white dwarf version linked above seems to remain.

There was a run of excellent Space Marine (Epic) battle reports in the 150s and 160s. Of these I'd go with Chaos At Kadavah from WD 156. It's the fluff that really makes this one for me as along with the intro there's several short pieces showing the battle from the pov of one of the traitor marines. Since I don't have a scanner I'll just have to settle for this excerpt from the epilogue, where the chaos marine encounters a mortally wounded Blood Angel in the aftermath of the battle.
"Traitor. Heretic. Abomination." The Space Marine muttered. Karlsen found himself staring down the barrel of the weapon into final darkness. Part of him wanted the Blood Angel to pull the trigger.
Karlsen's bitter laughter bubbled from his ruined and horribly mutated throat. Speech was difficult now. He tried to find the word to articulate his loathing. He searched his corroded soul for the single word that would embody his ten thousand years of hate.
"Brother, " he said eventually.

Gotta agree with Last Stand at Glazer's Creek. It's what got me into the Orks, and it's still what I think of as an example for what a WD article should be.
Plus, light-hearted pics of Adrian Wood and Paul Sawyer and really characterful (not skull/skull/skull/skull) models in the form of the Praetorians and Adi's fantastic Dreads (built from Squig Katapult crossbars and assorted bits).

My favorite report is Frontline Gaming's Necron Flyers versus Space Wolves.
http://youtu.be/dS77v_jx5gU
In addition to great game of 40k, it features grown men consuming large quantities of colored milk, which is followed by them doing impressions of godzilla's atomic breath.
Oh how I will miss 6th ed. The good news is that I can now look forward to new 7th ed battle reports with summoning spam.

My favourite was the Golgotha Epic battle report in WD 150 or so. Squats (and an allied Baneblade company lead by Yarrick) against Ghazkhulls Orks. It also made it into the fluff but of course the Squats were retconned out.
|
The prefect example of someone missing the point.
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.
-Leman Russ, Meditations on Imperial Command book XVI (AKA the RT era White Dwarf Commpendium).
Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

Probably not the best battle report, but my favourite would be one of the big Lord of the Rings SBG battle reports, the Siege of Helms Deep on a huge scratch built Hornburg board or perhaps the Siege of Minas Tirith and the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.
Nowadays I prefer reading battle reports on sites like One Ring and Wargamer blogs. I havn't read a White Dwarf battle report that I truly enjoyed for around 6 years now. My wargaming magazine of choice is Wargames Illustrated, which is far better quality IMO and more interesting as its broadened my Horizons.
I hope to play SAGA using Lord of the Rings figures in the next month or two.
I came into the Hobby around 2003 at the age of 12, so naturally missed many of the old classic Battle Reports that people here are referring to.

A toss up between two old 40k batreps if I'm just talking GW's main games. The first was the assault on an ork airfield by the black templars, they had rules for flyboyz getting to their planes, strafing, and some amazing story as first a dreadnought, then the emperors champion, desperately tried to make it to the boss in his battlewagon...They didnt make it. I just read and reread that a million times. The zap gun overloading and killing the dreadnought, the boss trying to hit the emperors champion with it too but he just walks through it like a boss. Starts charging the battlewagon, the boss opens up with a eavy shoota, stitches rounds towards him, wizz wizz crack crack the heavy rounds twist his head almost all the way around and he dies, sealing the failure of the mission. So awesome.
The second is an old cadian v night lords batrep in a city board, I remember the night lords hq and raptor squad murdering their way around the board, the cadians trying desperately to stop them but dying one by one, until the colonel was left to try and kill the chaos lord. He died on the traitor's lighting claws, and again, the background they wrote for it was killer.

That was the one featured in the original Cityfight book. It had a great photo of the converted Night Lords Warlord on a pillar by himself looking as if he was just about to swoop down.
