Spoiler:

(CNN) -- For air travelers who like to gripe about being cramped in economy, here comes another warning that they've never had it so good.

Airbus has filed a patent application showing detailed renderings of what may be the plane seat of the future.

The design shows narrow rows of folding saddle seats with low backrests on which passengers perch rather than recline.

The patent application, which makes even the most budget of budget airline seating look luxurious, was published last month and is available for viewing by the public.

As CNN reported last week, a new study says the vertical passenger seat may be the next big cost-cutting move in aviation.

Upright seat designs would allow airlines to pack more passengers into a cabin and provide an affordable alternative to public transportation on short haul flights.

The patent says current seating configurations have reached their passenger limit but numbers can be increased by switching to saddle-style designs (presumably stowing travelers in the overhead compartments has been ruled out).

It says the saddle format will accommodate four seats into a space previously occupied by three.

The Airbus design is somewhat similar to the SkyRider, a perching saddle for planes developed by Italian firm Aviointeriors and unveiled at an expo in 2010.

If Airbus is looking for positive feedback for its design, it may struggle.

The UK's Daily Telegraph likened the patent to "the inside of a galley," under the headline "The world's most uncomfortable plane seat?"

An Airbus spokesperson told CNN that the patent didn't necessarily mean it would be saddling up its aircraft anytime soon.

"Airbus files hundreds of patents each year -- this is what innovative companies do," Airbus UK head of media relations Robert Gage said via email.

"Many patents never become reality and there is no expectation that this would. It is really to preserve an idea and has not developed beyond this stage."

Gage said that even if the designs were to be developed, it would be up to airlines would choose the seating configurations and type.

A better view of the seat itself:

Yeah. That's the future of Airbus travel. I can't nope hard enough at this.

They look similar to the seating on some amusement park roller coasters, only with those horrible bicycle seats that put too much pressure on your more sensitive areas.

The price would have to be really, really good and the flight really, really short for me to pay for a seat like that.

Something like LA to Vegas or LA to San Francisco, maybe. Anything past an hour or so and it seems like you are just paying to be tortured.

Look at the close proximity of the passengers in those rows... do you want to be in front of or next to someone enjoying those kinds of services?

It would be like going to a really kinky Gallagher show, but even more messy. Probably more funny too, so I guess there is a bit of a trade off.

And just how safe are these seats? I really don't think they're stupid enough to try to put those in, what with potential for massive lawsuits and loss of business.
The price cuts that would have to be offered for someone to even consider buying a ticket would likely be ruinous.

On the off chance that Airbus are simply patenting this for the sake of having a patent, I think it's more of a blessing than a curse; imagine what'd happen if Ryanair or EasyJet got a patent down on these instead? It wouldn't be speculation, they'd be rolling off the production lines as we speak. >.<

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I'm betting this is the reason. There is probably much more to it, but they are protecting other trade secrets and just patenting the basics.

Still, it looks like something out of a South Park episode, but I can't recall what...

I have to stand for 45 minutes balls-to-ass with 100 smelly people on the metro to go from the suburbs to the city. And lots of people do that every day.

Why would a 45 minute flight between DC and New York be different? Some people commute between chicago/DC/NY every day... if it was cheaper, I think they would accept it.

They should really have tried to get the patent for the Oatmeal comics plane layout. Now that is a plane I would fly on!

http://theoatmeal.com/comics/airplane_layout

That patent doesn't make much sense anyway. I don't see it making a lot more room in the plane, the bike seat seems needlessly uncomfortable, no backrest would be absolute torture and even if they managed to squeeze more passengers in, where would the extra luggage go?

Is this real? There are no backs on those seats. How the hell will this ever pass safety regulations?

They do have backs, just not full ones. Look in the back row in the drawing. It is more like a short office chair.

I look forward to the day when they're wooden planks, and one must row the bo... plane through the air, getting occasionally whipped.

Possibly by stewardess dominatrixes (dominatrixi? dominatrixen? dominatrixices? kronk help me) just to tie it all together.

No boat oars. Bicycle pedals located under the seat. Comes in use when taxing across the runway. No whip but a cattle prod .....no AC either. Picture of a glass of ice water just out of reach

To be fair, some people would pay extra for it. It doesn't sound like the kind of thing I'd be into, but I've never tried it before. Who knows, might be a luxury service.
