Subject: Can IG wear Marine markings?
|
 |

Hey folks,
I am just starting a small IG army to sit alongside my marines as an ally and play small (sub 1k) games with.
I want them to be fluffy and will be running veterans with a lord commissar as opposed to the normal platoons that marine players deploy. They are to represent the remains of the planetary defence force my chapter had deployed on one of their recruiting worlds that was destroyed along with the rest of the chapters planets, with my chapter now numbering under 250 marines and with no geneseed to replace those numbers quickly they have taken to training these guardsman as close to their own initiates as their frail bodies can stand and they now march together into battle.
I want to do a different paint scheme to my marines but was wondering about using my marines markings and purity seals etc on the guardsmen to show their specialist nature, would even under these circumstances a non astartes be allowed to wear a fist logo of our parent chapter?

Given how close they are related and serve, I don't see a issue.
Maybe they just have a inverse colour or such to mark marines vs the IG

FudgeDumper - It could be that you are just so uncomfortable with the idea of your chapters primarch having his way with a docile tyranid spore cyst, that you must deny they have any feelings at all. |

I dont see why not. There are probably many duplicate things in the imperium. Its very hard to be original.
So yea probably. I wouldnt bat an eye if one of the millions of planets millions of regiments at least 50 of which had maybe SM marking of sort just by chance etc.

In the situation you listed it would seem okay.
Marine chapters are pretty varied aside from all having power armor and bolters, and since its your homebrew chapter, why not?

I would guess that the Ultramar regiments would have ended up with some Ultramarine symbology, and in Helsreach there is mention of veterans being awarded BT symbology for feats of heroism.
So there is likely some intentional, not just accidental, marking similarities.

Well, the IG are a completely different faction than astartes and therefore will never wear their logo or insignia. I'm not sure about PDF. Almost no information is ever revealed about their nature or operation so you could easily assume the PDF on the same planet as your SM chapter might wear the same logos. I would imagine the Ultramar Auxilia would wear the same colors and insignia as the Ultramarines.

Not a problem at all. Hell if memory serves me correctly there's even in-universe justification for it within the third war for Armageddon. If I remember correctly there were a few units of Armageddon Steel Legion and Black Templars that had some shared heraldry simply to identify them as a single, cohesive force and make it easier to pick them out for the various commanders of the campaign.

The book is called Helsreach, it is a space marine battle book. It was a air force of the steel legionares I believe and that had gotten those insignia's because of their courage act in a battle that happened years before Helsreach.

I saw them. They had the Ultramarine logo. However, keep in mind that the Ultramarines are the only chapter of Space Marines to rule over an entire region of space (which is 8 star systems?). I would assume that the planet or star systems of many other chapters may also have PDF that share the chapter logo. So imagination can conjure up quite a few ideas at this point.

Probably. Maybe not so much from the 1st or even Second Founding chapters as they are very distinct. But if some 23rd Founding chapter had a skull in a circle as their symbol I don't think it would be unreasonable for a guard chapter to accidentally have a similar symbol.

I have my guard sport the black templars chapter marking in the regimental heraldry since in its the fluff the regiment served under with them on the ghoul stars crusade.
The fluff on the the crusade is vague and I put the home planet near the area so its a reasonable jump to say that the chapter might have approved it with the regiment fighting well and showing zeal out of the norm for a freshly raised regiment. To back it up I'm going to build a BT detachment for my IG.
If it comes down to it just forge the narrative harder.

There really is no reason you can't make your own fluff.
If your chapter is a successor chapter it's even easier.
Many chapters recruit from many worlds. When the angels of death arrive there is no reason why the people of that world couldn't look up to the marines and emulate them as much as possible. As the chapter numbers dwindled there is no reason why they couldn't make adjustments in structures to foster unity.
Or you could make the emblem similar but not identical.
Of course this is more or less likely depending on the chapter.
Ultra marines (many have picked them) or a successor would be most likely.
Some chapters have hundreds of recruiting worlds.
Throw an idea your way.
Make a unit of veterans grenadiers (assuming it's still an option in the Astra militarum book). This way they can have carapace, a unit of scions would work, and you could make them emulate marines.

Some chapters such as the Ultramarines or Space Wolves operate their own PDF forces, and those could very well use the markings of the chapters they serve.

Remember it is also common for the overall commander of a campaign to set a Insignia that is worn by all Imerial forces in the war to aid identification.
Hell the force commander can even enforce a unified Ranking markings to aid in command structures.
