I'll say again that I don't think suing for compo is the appropriate response from the parent, either. FWIW.

Bad guy has a knife
You have a tazer
You are the one with authority
Bad guy refuses to drop knife when asked

Do you taze them?

Who cares how old the kid is, they can just as easily cut someones wrist when trying to subdue them.

The kids parents should have been able to say. Drop the knife and the kid should have obeyed.

People need to beat their kids more so they listen.

Uh, reasonable people care how old the kid is, because tazing can have unpredictable, sometimes fatal effects on tiny people?

By beat your kids I don't mean like crush their skulls, but people that don't believe one good spanking as a reference point to the future does not have an effect, I beg to differ.

I feel for the fact the kid was 8. But if the parents didn't raise their kids to know a few things to avoid that situation then it is on them.

1. Knives are dangerous, you don't play with them.
2. You listen to your parents/adults when spoken to.
3. Police are authority figures to be treated as such.

Any one of those 3 lessons stop the behavior.

Now the kid knows lesson 4.

4. If you wield a knife around police and don't drop it when they tell you to, you get tazed.

Bet the kid remembers that lesson.

TLDR... shame on the parents.

Wasn't the child mentally ill? If so, I think the parents should have taken her to a psychiatrist.

*edit- I agree with your first statement. Parents should never really beat their children, but I think spankings and other lighter punishments have their place.

Well, I mean, there's this effect. I guess you gotta make sure they don't get the better of you though down the line, huh? At least you're not eating them, I suppose.

If you have a mentally ill child that may be prone to acting out or having destructive behavior, don't you think it wise to keep the knives out of reach?

You don't have kids, do you?

Children aren't machines that will behave like X if you do Y. Children react unpredictabely. If our daughter has a bad day, oh boy, it's going to be a BAD day. Children just can't control themselves as much as we (hopefully) can.

I think you're underestimating the ingenuity of children. I mean seriously, dogs can jump on chairs to get something placed "out of reach". Could a child not do the same?

There is a difference between spanked once or twice and referencing it from there on out vs repeated beating.

I know quite a few people who have higher than normal IQ that have been spanked at least once in their lives.

Many of the times my children are misbehaving all I have to say is "do you want a spanking?" and it stops, just referencing it is enough.

On my child's worst day if I were to ask her.

What do you do if you have a knife and a police officer asks you to drop it?

Her answer would be, "Why would I have a knife?"

Awesome, you're teaching your children that in order to cooperate, you have to threaten others with physical violence.

I'm split on this issue. Threatening a spanking is effective, but it could teach violence. Now, I can't say which side I support.

Hey, I've been on your side.

Also, the lesson I'm learning from your observation is that Dakka seems to think that actions which cause physical pain to compel a subject to obey a particular command are acceptable coming from a state appointed figure, and terrible otherwise.

Again, the Dakka Pro-Authoritarian Club theory resurfaces.

If it gets my kid to drop the knife. I am OK with that. They have also been taught not to threaten other people.

This is where you say OMG YOU ARE SAYING ONE THING AND DOING ANOTHER.

Its working. I say whatever gets the job done.

What if you spank them WITH the taser?

Obviously taser-spanking is the only solution.

I find it SHOCKING that someone would use a tazer on an 8 year old....
