There comes a time in everyman's life when he looks in the mirror and thinks...bloody hell, what's happening?
Napoleon suffered this at Waterloo, Cornwallis suffered this at Yorktown, Tom Cruise suffered this in Top Gun...you get the idea.
I'm going bald!
Now, does anybody have any advice?
Do I spray paint my head black? Do I buy an ill-fitting toupee
Or do I accept I'm going the way of Kojak?
I need reassurance, that I'm not alone, that my fellow dakka members will rally round and say it's ok to be bald. I'm bald. I hope!!
Edit: I quite like the idea of being able to throw a toupee at somebody

I would say, if you have the head for it, shave the rest off, but with a caveat....
I dunno how things are in the UK, but here in the US the beard is making a bit of a comeback and for some reason many guys are shaving their head, whilst refusing to shave their faces.

It's ok for you - you're American. If anybody laughs at your baldness, you can shoot them! Being in the UK, I don't have that option! Damn those liberals! Automatically Appended Next Post: Ensis Ferrae wrote:I would say, if you have the head for it, shave the rest off, but with a caveat....

My head is shaped like a 50 pence piece That's a UK coin that's shaped like an octagon - not pretty!

I started going bald around 26 or 27 (32 now) and I went the Kojak route. Shave that gak! It is a little awkward at first to navigate the razor blindly around the back of your head, but within a few weeks you'll be a pro and eventually you'll be able to do a dry shave with a dull razor without batting an eye.*
As long as you don't have a horribly misshapen head you'll be fine. And I mean dented like a discount bin can of beans misshapen.
You'll have to be aware of things like sun screen for your head, and you'll want to invest in a good moisturizing lotion so your skin is supple for the people in your life whom you desire to rub your crown, but other than that you'll save money on shampoo and conditioner, but you'll spend it on razors and shave cream so it balances out.
Jokes aside, shaving has been great for me. I don't "feel" bald in the sense of being ashamed of my flawed follicles, and like the look of the completely smooth dome.
*Don't actually do this.

I'm surprised that nobody's mentioned the toupee option.
I mean, there are hundreds of gun experts, ex military types, military history experts, and loads of legal experts on dakka, but not one, not one person knows anything about toupees!!!
Disgraceful!!!

I don't think you can pull that off gracefully without being 50+ years old.
My hair went thin. I kept it shaggy until there was no possible way to hide it. I wound up going with the cue ball look, and many people have told me it looks much better now. My former boss once described the look as that of a "well-fed Lenin". Personally, I didn't think it was going to look good, because I thought I had a funnily shaped head, and I do, but it turns out I have the head perfect for bald.
Plus, you have an excuse to always wear a hat.

Well, thanks for the advice.
I'm feeling slightly depressed so I'm going to help a neighbour remove some asbestos and when that's done I'm going for a walk through the military firing range, past some cliffs, across that bridge that's been condemned for years, stop off at McDonalds's for a big mac, take a short cut across the motorway, and come home.
When I'm back home, I'm booking a holiday in Syria, and when that's done, I'm going to have a few cigarette's and fall asleep on the chair. Hope the smoke alarms are working

You could always do the Agassi style of super close cropped but also clearly bald. You don't need graying hair for that look to be decent.
Ultimately you have to just own whatever style you decide to go with. I think a lot of guys get too self conscious of their thinning hair and some go into denial and try to prop up whatever remaining hair they have left with mouses and styling gels, but that crap doesn't fool anyone. I know because I was one of those denial guys initially, and it is a waste of time and money. Just be confident with what you have going on and people will respond in kind.
