I think one of the best suggestion is just pick up what you like the look of as you are learning then as you play learn where the holes in your force are. Check the army builder or mayanet apps to check availability. Don't want to buy four or something you can only use two of for example.

I'm going to wait until I've properly familiarized myself with 3rd edition before I make any decisions. Hopefully I'll have a better idea of where I want to go next once I know more about the game, but I have a few ideas of the kind of models and play style I'd like. I think I'd like to try and keep my numbers low, and maybe tech upwards, when I can, to larger models like TAGs. I like the look of the Gecko and Iguana Squads. I already picked up a Reverend Custodier. There are quite a lot of models for Nomads that I like, such as the Tunguska Interventors, Tomcats, Reverend Morias, Riot Girls, and some of the remotes, but I should probably try and be selective. For PanO, I like the Cutters and Jotums, and the NeoTerra Bolts. I think I'd like to try and keep both armies about even, so I always have enough for a two player game. Later I would like to try some other factions. Yu Jing has a lot of great models. Namely: Guijia (I love how chubby he is), the Karakuri fembots, and of course the Yu Jing motorbikes. From Haqqislam, I like a lot of the soldier girls, and also the Odalisques. And I really like the Posthumans and Asuras from Aleph (Also I should have Penthesilea coming). Some of the mission pack models are really cute too. I think I'll just have to pore over the lists and try to figure out how many of my favorite models I could cram into one army.

My brother is taking the Nomads, to add to his already existing force, so I'll be taking the PanO. I already have an Ariadna force and always wanted a PanO group too. I plan on getting some Bolts, a Cutter, a Hexas or two and some more Sikhs. Pretty much whatever looks cool. I already bought that female Orc with the HMG, the Indigo spec ops guy and that kamau hacker.

I wonder how many people collect multiple factions?
Tempted to pick up the starter set just for terrain, and I've occasionally thought of picking up PanO (because Tags. And Fusilier Angus, the true Hero of Infinity.)

They said you would be able to buy the terrain and miniatures separately. Only the Reverend Healer and Father Knight are exclusive to Icestorm, and the CSU was supposed to be exclusive for preorders. So unless you want all the exclusives and both factions, it would probably be better just to buy the bits you do want when it comes out in the shop.

Terrain will be sold seperately and from I am sure I have read somewhere that the new pan o and nomads starters will be six of the seven models on each side. So nomads will be everything but moria and pan o will be everything but father knight.

You'll probably have to get over this if you want to buy about 70% of the range. While they're resculpting the core units, I wouldn't expect the Human Sphere models to get one for quite some time, and that's where most of the interesting stuff is, especially for sectorials.
Yeah it's just something that bugs me lol. But for now I think I'll wait and see for the new stuff to come out and maybe look at the upcoming sectorials.
Also a bit hesitant about older minis because the new stuff is almost in another scale compared to the older stuff. E.g. my new interventors are huge compared my wildcats.

That QK compatibility was a major selling point. And it seems that a many of the Pan-O will fit into ASA or Svalarheim (when it comes out) For me, the Grenzer, the Spektr and the Rev. Healer are the odd ones out. But then, when the Tunguska sectorial comes out...
Most people I know play several factions, or at least vanilla and sectorial.

That's why I went with QK.
It allowed me to use the nomads I had with the QK I had (really wasn't interested in all the nomad freaks and mutants).
The TAGs were bought purely because stompy powered armour battlesuits are cool (when less than 12m tall - because giantrobo aren't cool).

Things must be different around your way, because it's a long time since I've seen a QK list that was more Merc or Corregidor than Haqq.
Most lists I see tend to be built around a big central link, and Alguaciles can't link in QK and Druze are... well, I don't see a lot of them. Aside from people's irrational fear of 4-2 MOV, I'd have to hazard that only having one non-SWC loadout counts against them.

I won't be getting Icestorm myself so I won't be expanding on it.
I will, however, be getting the Nomad starter when it's released as a separate box, for the reason Red Harvest said - Qapu Khalki compatibility. The Alguaciles and Mobile Brigada are units available to QK. I'll probably give the Grenzer and Spektr (or is it a Zero? I forgot) to a friend who is interested in Nomads.

The Nomad box did indeed bring in a new Spektr.
What will likely become the Nomad starter box was, in terms of faction breakdown:
4x Corregidor(Alguaciles x3 and Mobile Brigada)
2x Tunguska(Spektr and Grenzer)
The only Bakunin model included with Icestorm was the "Icestorm Exclusive".
For PanOceania you had the following for faction breakdown:
3x NeoTerra(or potentially Varuna/Svalarheima) in the form of Fusiliers
1x definitively Svalarheima unit in the form of the Nisses.
1x possible Svalarheima or Varuna unit in the form of the ORC Trooper
1x Aconticemento unit in the form of the Akalis.
The only Knight model was, again, the "Icestorm Exclusive".

I think I'll end up adding a Corregidor starter to the Nomads, I love the look of the Helcats and Intruders. I've already got a Military Order set for PanO, there's not a huge amount of compatibility with Icestorm but if 40k has taught me one thing, it's that Sword-wielding Religious Nutters in Spaaaace are cool! That, and the fact that half the reason I want Icestorm is that Father Knight!

The QK use their money to augment their ground forces with Mercs. A Merc heavy QK list is still a QK list. Not only that, but Druze and Kaplan have heavy ties to Haqqislam and are, in fact, standard Haqqislam units outside of QK. They're not Mercs really for Haqqislam. As for Corregidor heavy, I'd question that. QK can take a total of 6 Corregidor models. 4 Alguaciles, 1 Mobile Brigada and 1 Iguana. That's it. They're also not terribly inspiring choices aside from the Iguana, so I don't see why people would be basing their list around that.

Um, if I wanted to PLAY haqqislam, I'd play Haqqislam. Playing Haqqislam means using models I won't buy. I dislike the direction the kum bikers took, so will not ever get them. I don't like many of the other choices available to Haqq, either (as models. Not getting the models means I don't care what the profiles mean). QK for me is the compromise between two factions that I don't like enough of the models to want to play either of them. You'd rather I not play because I don't like enough models for either faction? I guess I'm not your idea of a gamer, then - as no company makes a model range that I like 100% of. I'm not other people's idea of a gamer because I loathe card games, board games and video games, either. I don't really care. I game for my own reasons, not to make anyone else happy.
As it is, my QK consists of a core of Haqq units (KTS ARE a haqq unit, in addition to being mercs for others) - Hafza, Ghulam, Jannisaries and Djanbazan units with remotes, and the odd nomad unit (if I want to take the Iggy, I take stooges (algies) to go with him - but usually I'll just use Scarface if I want a light TAG). I don't actually have enough nomad units to make a "correg"-lite army unless it's only going to be a 150pt force anyway.
MY YJ is JSA as I'm not actually a fan of many of the mainline YJ units/models. I prefer most of the JSA units/models even if I never figure out how to win games with them. I like my ninja. Ninja > kung fu monks.
As for my panO ... Rather than dislike the croc-man models and whinge about them while using them, I run NCA. Can't use the model, so the ugly models become irrelevant.
