Hey guys,

I have recently rediscovered my Blood Angels and have been looking at buying The Sanguinor. I am really interested to know how he stacks up in 7th and how cost effective he is and any tactics that would suit him.

Thanks in advance

Still among the worst HQs for BA, which is one of the worst armies in the game. Making him one of the worst models in the game!

and how cost effective he is

Very very poor. Other characters can join HIM now, but his weakness of being a lone T4 2+ save model remains. Anything that would bury 3 terminators (120 points) will kill him....all 275 points of him. He doesn't fight like he's worth 275, and he doesn't survive like he's worth 275. The only thing half way decent is his aura of +1A, which is mostly garbage since melee isn't really a thing in 7th edition.

and any tactics that would suit him.

He guards my display case. Where he will remain until he drops 100-120 points in cost or basically gains 2 wounds, attacks and a S6 AP2 swing at initiative weapon.

Which will never happen. He may strike at init next codex but thats it. GW seems to be phasing eternal warrior out of the game except for specific circumstances.

But to the OP, the sanguinor is kinda bad, though very fun. 2+/3++, usually with fnp, is pretty durable, even with only 3 wounds. He rips through monsters on the charge, and is great vs basic troop choices, as well as doing some super cool stuff for your army. But he is, unfortunately, not worth the price tag. Hopefully in the next codex he will gain an ap2 at init weapon and maybe another wound while dropping 30 points. I want him to be playable, and he does some powerful stuff, but just not enough for the cost.

I don't think there's a less effective way in the entire codex to spend 275 points...except maybe dual thunderhammer death company with jump packs.

Dante vs Sanguinor – for 50 points more…

Sanguinor gets +2ws, +1s, -1w, +1a, 3++ save (rather than 4++). Loses shooting attack and has no death mask. Does not have access to no scatter ability and loses hit and run. Lose independent character. Loses the ability to make sanguinary guard troops. Gains EW, fearless, furious charge. Gains rerolls against a single enemy HQ. Gives +1a to all friendly within 6”. Lastly, gives 1 friendly sergeant +1WS, W, I and A permanently.

The character upgrade alone is probably 50 points.

The other changes – for what is essentially an identical price – seem like a wash. The trick then becomes how to make that 50 points worth of sarge upgrade worth it.

The best way is to make sure that you only have 1 sarge to upgrade and thus, know how to equip them and make best use of the upgrade. This means you are limited to essentially death company, sanguinary guard, vehicles and IC’s.
So… take dante and the sanguinor. Then take nothing but sanguinary guard, death company, vehicles and a single assault marine or (my preference) vanguard veterans.

This enables you to ensure that the sarge is properly equipped to make use of the boost. Not sure about 7th but can BA vanguard still assault after deep strike? A boosted sarge with descent of angels in a unit of vanguard could do some real damage if loaded properly.

Is it super awesome? Nope. Can it work? sure! Are there better options? Of course! This is just a way of getting the most out of a less than perfect situaiton

Oh dear Emperor!
I'm really sorry, but this is awful idea. You are spending 500 points to two overpriced characters. And to make them work, you buy a tonload of crappy units. I mean, DC can be effective, Vanguard Veterans are debatable at most and Sanguinary Guard might just work in fluffy list.
But your plan is to put those three units, which are most likely the most overpriced ones in the entire codex, in a single list, build your tactics around it and somehow assume that a half-assed Eldar army with incompetent player won't blast it into milloin pieces.
Seriously. A bad idea, it's not viable or doable in any way to build a list around any of those units you listed.

And justifying a cost of Sanguinior, by comparing him to another overpriced model and claiming that an extra attack/wound for a single character is worth those 50 points (fifty, read it out loud if it makes it easier to comprehend).
You just built your whole list on two helluva expensive characters, few bad units and a single guy, who is now so star-spangled awesome with his three (yes, count them three) attacks and two wounds with still only 3+ armor and no Inv that he makes up for those Wasted points.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Why not just equip all of your ASM characters/Priests with Power Weapon and try to keep the golden fellow near him.
In a jumper army it's your best shot.

Loses independent character... that alone is not worth anything extra he gets even if he got everything Dante got as well. And Dante is pants for his points anyway.

o.O Since when are Blood Angels crappy?

I haven't been around since 5th, so help me out here.

5th Edition competitive BA lists had a few scouting Baal predators that would scoot up the field and flame the **** out of stuff, 2-3 autocannon/las predators, and some combination of storm ravens/drop pod dreadnoughts/priests giving FNP bubbles to everything/razorbacks/other.

What happened?

All other MEQ books got cheaper units and better units. BA lost their codex specific psychic powers. Assault in general got weaker. Xenos armies rate of fire skyrocketed.

Basically everyone got better around them, and they got nerfed.

They are my bulwark against the Terror. They are the Defenders of Humanity. They are my Space Marines, and they shall know no fear.

Other Marines got cheaper and CC took a Huge nerf. So BA are really over costed.
