If you do decide to make that article Para that'd be sweet, in the meantime while I wait I may take you up on the PM for tips offer. When I start my Harlie force I'd love to try out a style similar to what you did for your Pirate Prince. For now however I will continue to drool over my keyboard while reading your thread.

Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

UK

Sooooo.... been a while since I picked up a brush, as it's been a hectic couple of weeks with loads of essay deadlines coming up, which coninced with me really getting back into Fallout 4, so what free time I did have was mostly spent playing that.

But with the end of the month approaching (Damn you, February, for being the calendar's resident Hobbit! ), I had to do something for the monthly challenge as I'm not going to break my 23-month completion streak now! So after a frenzied dig through the bits box, I came up with the parts to put together a Master of Signal, and painted him up in Emperor's Children colours because why the heck not? If I actually get my HH stuff on the table, I'll just say he's a loyalist who joined up with my army, they've already got a few other traitor legion defectors in there.

Not my finest work, but a good enough kick up the arse to get me painting again!

Anyway, that's all for now, thanks for looking any any thoughts welcome!

Nice little kitbash. I recognize most of the parts, but whats the stick with the green orb on top?

It is, in fact, a stick with a little green orb on top! The stick is just a cut-down GK weapon haft (I think), the orb is one of the 'sights' from a Necron Deathmark rifle. Like I say, it was literally a case of sifting through the bits box to come up with anything remotely useable given that the challenge's deadline didn't give me time to order anything specifically.

Cheers fellas!

@Gits: You resuming work on your EC was actually a big inspiration, I'd been wanting to try my hand at the scheme for a while but seeing those guys again tipped me over the edge. Pretty sure yours are still superior though, I'm in awe of the purple you've achieved!

Afraid to say the weapon got changed when I went back last night to do some fixes to the paintjob. Spears are the EC's thing, but I replaced it with a chainsword as a) it looked a bit too obviously homemade and b) the Master of Signals isn't really a combat character, giving him a big power spear doesn't work with that image.

I also redid the face and tinted the armour a bit more heavily, much happier with it now:

Hopefully I'll have some more stuff to show soon, there's still the rest of the Ultras and Tau on my desk to work through, and I have something coming for March's challenge soon that should be a treat to paint up.

Model still looks stunning. I think the change of weapon works better for the model. It looks more uniform now.

I don't think the model was bad before, but the redo does somehow look better. The extra tint on the armor definitely helped.

Not where I should be

He looks brilliant, the hint to the armour is perfect, and the change of weapon makes perfect sense, though would like to see that spear on someone else more combat orientated.

Ta folks.

Now, from 30k to 40k with my entry for the Space Marine themed challenge (always a personal favourite, can't imagine why! ). I've wanted to paint up the Watch Master from the Deathwatch range ever since I first saw it, and just happened to get a great deal on him in swap shop that coincided with the challenge.

First off, it's an amazing sculpt. So nice to see a Marine from GW that isn't in an action pose, just standing there with a static menace that's every bit as imposing. Loads of great textures to work with, and a totally unique weapon and armour set. Here's where he's at after a couple of hours' work, the armour is pretty much done, the face just needs highlights and the rest is still very much in progress. I'm very pleased with the verdigris experiment on the armour, not something I've tried before with any success.

No idea what to do with the cape? Red is out as I just cannot manage to get red capes to work, they always end up far too muted even by my ultra-grimdark standards. Any ideas?

Thanks for looking, thought's welcome! Also, while we're on the subject of Deathwatch, anyone heading to Adepticon (particularly the doubles 40k tournament) keep an eye out for a certain black-clad force of Marines I painted a while back! The client has promised me some pics of the army in action, so I'll be sure to share those once I've got them.

Well, better cross that off the list of "Ember's potential entries". Great job, the all silver part scheme looks real grimdark!

Looking good. I kinda like him headless... THAT would be really intimidating on the battlefield.

I was very pleased when I saw this sculpt, a refreshing pose IMO. For my Deathwatch, I paint the capes depending on what chapter they are from, so maybe that can help you.

Yeah, nice job on the EC there, Para. The chainsword does look more appropriate for a non-CC-oriented character and role.

Thanks folks.

A few hours later, and the Watch Master is done (or as good as, pending any final tweaks)! I went for a purple cloak in the end, nice and easy to paint and works nicely with the rest of the palette.

Sadly you can't really see it in the pics, but the base is built around one of the panels listing battles from the Venerable Dreadnought, the idea being that it's a flagstone in the Watch Fortress engraved with the Deathwatch's history.

Any thoughts welcome as always!

The cape looks fine Para! Don't know what you were so worried about

The face is awesome, feels more Roman Legion-ish (the colour scheme), suits such a stoic figure. Well done Para.

Thanks everyone.

On an unrelated note, I'm thinking of putting together that article on my painting style that I mentioned a while back over the weekend if I'm not too busy. I'm thinking it'll be more of a style guide than an actual tutorial in the step-by-step sense, discussing techniques rather than actually explaining them, but is there anything specific anyone wants to see in there?

Not sure on anything specific, but I'd love to read that! It's always interesting listening to people's painting and modelling thought processes
