I wonder what people would think if I brought forge world units to normal games? Obviously I would state that I am using them before hand, as I had in the past. I use to run a tempest land speeder just for kicks back in the day. It wasn't game breaking, but it was nice to see something else on the table for once. I have been looking for ways to get my mind back into the idea of playing Black Templars again. I have been hooked on Dark Angels and Grey Knights for so long, I feel like I have overly neglected my main army that I have been building since 3rd edition. I have a few items that already make them stand out. Some FW bits of armor and some converted HQ choices. But nothing along the lines of using any one unit or vehicle from FW. Two things that I am looking at in using...

Spartan Assault Tank and Contemptor dread.

Now both of those units would be something that my opponent might not have an idea of what they are or what they can do. A spartan assault tank punching straight up the table to unload a full unit of terminators would be one hell of a surprise, or even a full 20 man crusader squad. I like that idea, something that can carry a full crusader squad into battle. Or a drop podding contemptor dread coming in with twin kheres assault cannons. But...I don't want it to be that guy. I like to build fluffy lists with lots of crusader squads and LRCs. I have a lot of heart for that army and I rarely bring any sort of allies with them. I use to back in the day when they had 0 fliers.

I think I could get them, use them in some games but prepare my lists to work around without having them in it. I wouldn't be hurt if you decided not to play against forge world, but I would show you the rules and let you see what they could do. Maybe it would change minds? I dunno. Has anyone else used FW units without problem?

In general people seem to be softening on the absurd "legality" debates about Forge World. As always it's your regular opponents and community who will be the deciding factor.

True. I tend to really only play with a few people from work and they are always getting a few FW units here and there. I bounce around from store to store as I have just moved into a new area last year. (Still haven't found my -home- yet.) My old game store might not have cared too much as they always like to face against non common units. But, I would hate to show up some place and find out they all frown upon FW units.

As a general rule, people don't care about Forge World anymore.
I've used the Spartan Assault Tank, and I'll tell you that, while pretty expensive (315 points), it is simply the best delivery system I've used in the game for an assault unit.

Most people these days understand that FW is part of the game just like everything else GW publishes, and won't have any problems with it (especially if it isn't a competitive tournament). You might encounter the occasional TFG who refuses to play unless you obey their rules about how you build your army, but you're better off ignoring those people anyway. In fact, having a FW unit in your army, even if it isn't really necessary, is a nice way to filter out people who are going to make your game a miserable waste of time.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Well thanks for the encouraging thoughts! Perhaps my BT might put some fear back into my opponents once again. I can miss the good old days, but they won't be coming back. Adapt and overcome with the new meta. Even if it is throwing down 700 points worth of killing machines.

Spartan Assault tank with armoured ceramite and a load of 10 terminators waiting inside is one can of whoop ass anyone would fear.

Please tell me you have crusader squads in Land Raider Cursaders too...

That just gave me an idea....an awful idea....a wonderful, awful idea!

Of course I do! What true Templar would not ride into battle in a LRC! I -always- have one. I don't see it as a true BT army unless I field one. Though....There have been times where I opted for the other tactic BT often use. Drop pods and deep striking. But if I field anything other than that...LRC is there leading the charge.

Is it this one sided now? You're TFG if you DON'T want fw in your games? Well that is a big 360

P.S.A. I won't read your posts if you break it into a million separate quotes and make an eyesore of it.

I would argue that it has always been kind of dickish to refuse FW units just because they are FW. It's just that the anti-FW crowd seem to be the minority now, I believe.

Yeah if someone has bought official models its pretty lame to tell them they cant play them because of your preconcieved ideas of balance, all the while giving the greenlight to lists of max Riptides or 7 Waveserpents

That being said it shouldn't be a top of the list purchase for anybody before crucial army pieces, and is telling them LoW is fine only in 2k+ games really such an unfair thing?

I would not suggest anyone new to the hobby or building an army to focus on getting FW. Unless they are making an army specific to utilize FW like a Minotaur army or something to that nature. I already have a vast collection of Black Templars, so adding FW to it would only create a more flexible pool of options I can choose from.

But yes, I would be upset if my opponent had tons of waveserpents and maxed out riptides yet would claim FW as not suitable for standard games. I don't see that happening, but it would be frustrating if that was ever the case.

It's more a comment of the state of the game, whether they are playing max riptides or not, the fact that this stuff is available, and some armies do have access to such models even if taken as one offs, and others do not have anything even close, and this is the game they are wanting to play, who are they to tell you that your official 40k FW models that you payed money for are not legal in this meta due to "balance issues"?

It's not an issue for me as I neither run any FW, have any use for any FW models, or have encountered any opponents insisting I don't want to run them, but I think my response would be simply to say "fine, I'll play with strictly GW 40k non FW models due to balance issues, now give me a quick look at your list I'm just going to go ahead and ban everything in there that I feel is unbalanced for 40k as well".

I agree with you and I would never turn down someone who wants to use FW units in a game. I did come across someone who was using the boarding shields on his tac squad against me. I said.. "Do you want to use those as the real thing?" He declined sadly, but it would have been interesting to see them in action.

Yes, it all depends on your group(s). With most people I play with FW is not a problem at all. But all those guys are nice and if someone wins constantly he even offers to change his list or offers advice on how to beat the list. With this atmosphere most people losing do not lose motivation, in the contrary. If someone brings a FW model (or IK when they came out) the reaction is mostly "Hey, let me try to take that down" and not "Boo hoo, I might lose against it".

All a matter of perspective and attitude
