GW: £300 - mostly ig at start of year 2nd hand

I started some IG then decided that the remaning £££ needed would be better spend on 4 infinity factions!

Even though wargaming is not the most expensive hobby I have, 2014 was a great year.

Warmahordes - 300
Malifuax - 250
Infinity - 250
Firestorm armada - 450
40k - 1200
Modeling related items - 250
historicals - 100

I've already spent 200 on models in the new year. So it looks like 2015 will be even better.

I really should stop. Most of it gets fondled and drooled over, then goes up on the shelves and isn't touched for 10 years. I'm not much on actually playing the games beyond board games or a bit of X-wing. My son, who'd I'd got back into 40K to play with prefers the Dawn of War video game, so all my 40K stuff just sits on the shelf once again.

I noticed that I only bought any GW at the very beginning of this year - a couple of the new Tyranid models (and some other already-painted-stuff - I'm bad about getting to painting, as those unpainted Tyranid I bought in January can attest).

Overall, somewhere around $4-5K at least, on:

Boardgames (Zombicide, Super Dungeon Explore, Formula D, Munchin, etc.)
AT43 (Karmans, Therians & UNA) & Confrontation (Werewolves)
Dust (FF sale stuff)
X-Wing
Star Trek Attack Wing
D&D Attack Wing
Flames of War
Bolt Action
Sedition Wars (not the KS, bought the game for $28)
D&D 5E, Pathfinder

It never ends well

I never really add it up. I bought my airbrush at the very end of 2013 or the start of 2014, if we ignore that, ummm, maybe $300. I bought Achtung! for Flames of war, a few boxes of 15mm tanks and infantry, I think the only thing I bought from GW was some snap fit Termagants and snap fit Orcs.

I feel like I'm starting to break the cycle of buying more than I paint, this year I've mostly painted stuff I already owned.

If we include the airbrush then about $500 all up.

Well this got interesting pretty quickly!

I'm at just under $2000 for KSers in 2014 (honestly, less than I expected!)

For 2014 GW, I added a little bit to my SW force for around $500, got all the End Times Hardcovers for around $250, and got Space Hulk for about $75.

For 2014 FW, I got all the new Primarchs (around $300), the HH Collectors Edition ($250ish IIRC) and began my Salamanders (maybe $400).

For 2014 Infinity, I got Icestorm ($100) and probably spent another $200 in total.

And for X-Wing and other assorted board games, I probably spent around $600 (dunno if this is even close).

I'd say I'm probably sitting at around $5k-$6k in total, but I sold about $3500 in gaming stuff this year as well, so the number is actually super small.

May have to keep better track this year!

@Sean - Do you know when you'll start producing stuff out of the new shop?!

I started playing Warmachine this year, and later got my brother and his girlfriend into it. With some of the things I bought them to get them started/expanded, I'd say around $800-1000 on that.

Thought about five times of starting back into 40k, but the high cost to get started made me shelve the idea, so $0 to GW. Obviously it wasn't that I don't want to pay, because I spent a lot building up my Khador army for Warmachine, but the initial cost was a huge factor.

I really don't want to think about how much I spent in 2014 too much, I'm just happy to have what I did buy.
3 40k armies and a ton of X-wing stuff. Plus scenery, paints and brushes.

My wallet is fearful of what is likely to come in 2015.

The nature of a lot of what I do keeps it out of commercial nature (not recasting - but lots of heavily inspired work). Not only that, but having customers sucks. Most of my work is for a local group of around 12 gamers, plus continuing support for two of my past groups (so it ends up being in the 40 recurring customer range). I also do some high end, fine scale models that really help to justify the costs to my better half. Just enough to say I need it...not so much to actually have to have it.

What is funny is that Sean has put more into his hobby workshop than I have invested into my new miniatures business this year. Of course, I am not building any structures...yet. We're still looking for a new house, and we'll have to put in a small production/warehouse space once we find a place. Even so, I'm not spending 40 grand on a purpose-built gaming/hobby/(semi)professional workshop anytime soon, lol.

I kinda got the idea for this thread from the GW financial thread. Someone had researched average user spend per year on Gw at about 450 quid.

It is more how much the average miniature customer spends in general (not GW specific). The average spent though has remained fairly constant for 15 years though - when GW was at their highest level, when they crashed and still today. The number of people spending that amount though has been going up fairly steadily in the past 6 or 7 years.

Also, while it is lost on some people, forum users are not average customers. Even now, with very high levels of internet acceptance - people are forums tend to be more fanatical than your average customer.

Also, due to issues relating to how forums get used, a question which requires an active response will get fewer answers than a poll question. Part goes to people being lazy (so only the more fanatical will bother to type it in), part goes to internet psychology. 90% of the people, even those who can be bothered to create accounts - won't post anything. They lurk. Give them a poll, they might click a button - but getting them to actually respond with a message is like pulling teeth.

Hmmm. Good thread idea. Gotta think about this for a minute.

So, I think I started the year without any purchases for a good while.

The first thing I picked up I think was probably some Norman Infantry from Conquest Games for about 25 euro.

Then some Great Eagles and Warg Riders from GW for 75 euro.

I got Hail Caesar for 40 euro (I think?) and 40 Pike And Shotte Royalist infantry for about 25 as well. I picked up some odds and sods for scenery that came to about a tenner. Towards the end of the year I picked up some Uruk Hai, paints and brushes for a total of 70 euro.

I got Nethyrmaul for 40 euro too.

I spent on three KS this year (!).
$235 on RBG KS and $210 on Dungeon Saga.

So, totals:
Paints and Supplies:
55 euro
Historicals:
90 Euro
GW: (all LOTR purchases!)
100 euro
Other Fantasy:
40 Euro
KS
370 Euro.

So 285 off KS, 370 on KS and 655 all together.

Jeez! Always a bit sobering to see the numbers laid out like that.

Very important point. I remember years ago while working at GW, and then an independent afterwards, a number of the others who worked there didn't even know of forums let alone use them.

Think that has changed somewhat these days and would have increased with blogging/twittering/use of FB etc. but I think to take the time to log on to a forum, write comments about it, marks it as a pretty important hobby for that person. I'm pretty in to trail motorbiking, and normally go away 3-4 weekends a year, same again am in to cars and spend a fair amount of time organising road-trips and whatnot. Both of these activities have active online communities, but I'm not enough of a 'fan' (despite spending many, many times the amount I would spend on miniatures/wargaming) to constitute doing any more than the occasional bit of lurking within those forums or searching for a specific bit of info.

I would be very, very surprised if there were that many 'casual' purchasers spending the £3-4000 a year that some people are remarking on in this thread.

Around $2300 converted to dollars.

1/2 is supplies, terrain, tools, materials, cases, paint etc
1/3 is miniatures (40k and Necromunda, a little Fantasy)
1/10 is magazines (mostly old White Dwarf)

This year... let's just say having a baby and taking 20 months parental leave will put a damper on recreational spending in the family.

$2,365.73. Exactly. I use a budgeting program. That includes boardgames too. I'm not counting GenCon travel cost in that total, but that would add more. I treated that as vacation.

Mostly on:
-Relic Knights
-Storage supplies (I redid all storage for Flames of War)
-Sci-Fi Scenery (for 40K, Relic Knights)
-Flames of War
-Kickstarter
-Boardgames
-Paints, glues, primers, flock, etc.

More than last year, but not the most I have ever spent. I focused on completing some hobby projects in 2014 and that boosted the amount.

I expect 2015 to be less - I have too much to paint already.

$120 for Space Hulk, only new GW thing I bought
$100 to warlord games for hail Caesar stuff
$110 for flames of war stuff from battlefront, right at the beginning of the year (but my gaming group for that dried up)
$200 into X-Wing
$100 bucks on various magazines (but not a single one of GW's new 'pamphlets'). Mostly to Miniature Wargaming Magazine, and the some of Battlefront's magazines
$150 for random ebay stuff

My local GW closed too, so I've switched to amazon for misc materials, but I was already switching to Vallejo paint anyway.
