I wonder if they're doing a specialist game or if they hope to incorporate FW's flier rules into 40k somehow.

I see them trying to patent the Kirby base, it looks like Kirby in profile (insert picture of a buttocks here) so therefore no other company could make a similar base.

Well, if true and 9th ed fantasy rumours are true and it becomes a sorta skirmish type game, Hex bases are nice for establishing B2B contact/connection for scrums whilst letting you have more than 4 sides that square bases have..! >_>

Whole bunch of nonsense here. If they're going to switch bases, it'll be a move to something they already do like round ones, instead of an unprecedented shape.

I always have question marks next to 'rumour' posts that originate out of America. Not sure why someone in a country other than the place the game is developed and manufactured out of would be in the know when it comes to anything of real material effect to the GW hobby-verse.

I find it really hard to believe they'd completely alter the basing style for either of their core games. They're to ingrained in the games to arbitrarily change it. Thinking it might be for a new game, assuming there's any truth to these rumors at all.

Many of the early original 40K metal figs came on hex bases.

Jigsaw puzzle bases! Your model may only be placed directly adjacent to the model in which the jigsaw piece fits. If at any time, you break the puzzle chain, the unit is immediately removed from the game.d

Strictly from a modeling perspective, I wonder if hex bases might make it easier or harder to rank up infantry. I'd like to think it would be easier because by offsetting each rank you don't have hordes of similarly posed guys getting in each other's way. But the more I think about it, the more I think that the likely scenario (especially if they're regular hexagons) is that a unit equipped with a weapon and shield would routinely end up with the weapon and/or shield bashed into the head/back/butt of whoever is ranked in the offset row in front of them.
Of course this is an entirely academic comment for me because the uniqueness or lack thereof of GW base designs has never been a factor in my choice to abandon the company. They could make the bases the shape of tesseracts that merely looking upon them transforms me into an enlightened entity of pure energy and love whose consciousness transcends the fetters of space, material, and time itself, and I'd still never buy them if the minis mounted on them were ridiculous-looking and over-priced.

To be fair, that's largely Mantic's deal: selling cheap miniatures that undercut the competition on price. There's a place for it in the market, obviously, and Mantic is at least fairly straightforward about it. "building big armies" is the company slogan, not, "the best miniatures in the world." Mantic is focused on quantity over quality.

I hear what you say, but I don't think that entirely excuses human minis with proportions that make you puke with lovecraftian horror, elves that must have limbs like chopsticks once they take their armour and padding off, melty goblins, and these. I don't think it would be an unreasonable expense, mostly just eyes and half a sense of aesthetics.

Does not one person find it odd that this "friend" said files for their new molds came in? GW produces most all of their sprues in house with their own facility (except for some large terrain which they sent out to China). So unless they dropped millions of dollars of equipment in Lenton, I have a very hard time believing any of this...

On the other hand I have an email from a lawyer in Nigeria who apparently wants to send me $3,000,000.

Makes me wonder whether GW deliberately tells different stories to different people to see where the leaks come from.
It's a good strategy - Tyrion used it to suss out the old Maester as Cersei's spy in Song of Ice and Fire. Lawyers sometimes advise commercial clients to do this sort of thing when they are concerned that the clients' confidential info is being stolen by insiders (such as setting up "dummy" email accounts on customer lists, so that if the email address starts getting email they know their list is compromised). So, no reason it couldn't work for GW.

To be fair, most of these things are subjective. I think Mantic's orcs and undead range are excellent, and the fact that they are so much cheaper means that you would need to be moneybags to go for the GW versions of the latter in particular. Which is why, at least from my experience, it's rare to see WFB Undead armies these days that don't have Mantic skellies in there bulking up the big units.
Every company (well, most) has it's share of stinkers for sculpts, I don't want to start ruining anyone's morning by starting to post pics of them on here!
