Subject: Space Wolf Terminators in drop pods?
|
 |
Hardened Veteran Guardsman

I've seen on some forums that SW can take a fast attack drop pod, empty, to use as a transport of terminators. Is this is legal? is it in the codex? FAQ? thanks
|
He's been ferried through hell on a ship that's ten thousand years old to some godforsaken, war-torn rock; He is one of ten million men snatched from his home to fight a war he barely understands; He wages war against devouring hiveminds, ravenous demons and hordes of hyper-advanced aliens with strange technologies and sorceries he never dreamed existed; no one will remember his sacrifice, there will be no records of his deeds, no glorious parades in his honor, and no remembrance of his name. All he will earn is a shallow, unmarked grave on a forgotten world untold lightyears from home.
Yet for all this thankless sacrifice a Guardsman is a man, just like you. He has no millennia-old genetic engineering, no prophetic leader, no miracles of faith. He has his lasgun, his orders, and those beside him. He is the Imperial Guard.
And he will hold the line.

There is nothing really preventing it. The DP states it can fit 10 infantry. Terminators count as 2 infantry a piece, so you can shove 5 in there. It is hardly broken. Blood Angels have the exact same ability. Though you could also put a locator beacon on the DP and drop more than one squad near it.

But aren't drop pods in the dedicated transport FOC meaning they can only be taken if they have unit to transport? The terminator section in the codex says only that they can take a land raider or stormwold as a dedicated transport.

No, Blood Angels and Space Wolves can take Drop Pods as a Dedicated Transport for units that allow it OR as a Fast Attack. And if you take the Drop Pod as a Fast Attack, you can put any number of stuff it in, including allied Centurions, Terminators, Jump Pack infantry, the works.

I do believe locator beacons have to be on the board the turn prior in order for it to benefit.
So hypothetical situation where they are useful. You play space wolves so we'll do that. I think they still have the rule saying half the pods drop turn 1 so..
Turn 1, locator beacon and 2 other pods land, scattering normally.
Turn 2, 2-3 drop pods land near locator beacon, benefitting.

ah didn't know that. So same thing with the land raider, is in HS section but can be DT if the unit takes it as DT, ok cool. Does it state that anywhere in the rules (that a FA drop pod can transport other units) or is that what we infer. Just so I can explain this to people who haven't heard of it ebfore

Yeah, that is true. Regardless, you could stuff a squad of Terminators in the Drop Pod and then subsequent ones wouldn't scatter.

Yeah I figured, never really needed beacons for drop pods so won't be a problem

Its a transport so yes it can carry units even if it wasn't selected as a DT. In the same way you can jump in a heavy support Land Raider.
you won't get any argument about this once you show them its in fast attack slot. Possible moaning ? lol yea, but 100% legal
Hell I have lists where i just bring empty pods to add to my turn 1 drop total. Pods in FA is really useful.

Is it possible to psych people out by putting a squad in one drop pod, but dropping two? Or does your opponent automatically know which DP is which? This way you can force them to use up interceptor shots and other countermeasures.

You have to tell your opponent whats arriving. Other wise everyone would always just say " oh well..... you blew up the empty one" haha
Edit*** Although if there was a way to write down which one was which on paper that would be awesome and very realistic. I may have to bring this up with my gaming group

Anyone can put anything in any transport now so long as they're Battle Brothers. You can put Ogryns in a Space Wolf Drop Pod if you really want to.

Yep. I believe it's just Dedicated that can only have that unit start in it

Automatically Appended Next Post: Pyeatt wrote:I do believe locator beacons have to be on the board the turn prior in order for it to benefit. So hypothetical situation where they are useful. You can make a good combo with the Wolves unleashed detachment, you can send in the firts wave of drop pods a empy one (or more depending how many drop pods you have) all with the locators beacons, then in turn two you can choose one to arrive without a reserve roll ( this sum up to you others reserves) ensuring a deadly unit arrive, so you can ensure your terminator unit (preferably a dakka build, like a 5 TDA wolf guards with wolfclaws, combi bolters and one heavy flamer) in drop pod or teleporting in turn two
