i'm going to have to say now. I've been playing games since the c-64 and although i remember having great fun playing bond 4 player split screen on the n64 that was more about the fun than the game. I find games now are just so much better, and a lot kinder as well. How soon we all forget the headdesk moments of hardness from old games.
Also sants row series, i've played 4 and 3 , they are the best series ever. I've never had a game so concerned with fun and being quite as unserious as those two games. I really enjoyed the superpowers in 4 , when running and jumping i felt like i was playing city of heroes (hows that for nostalgia? )

Content cut to make DLC. Skinner box microtransactions (some of them not very micro) in full release AAA titles. Increasingly pointless DRM and online "services". Further division with console generations. "Freemium". The fact that "freemium" is even a word! Ubisoft (in toto). Gaming golden age. Only if the gold in question is fool's gold.

XCOM Enemy Unknown
Wing Commander
Wing Commander Privateer
I will also throw Doom in there.
The second golden age is about the turn of the millenia with new upgraded graphics full 3D but still more emphasis on good gameplay than on AAA graphics content. The last time when concentration of energy could be on something other than visuals fro mass market games.
Baldur's Gate 1 & 2
System Shock 2
Morrowind
Thief 1 & 2
Gothic 1 & 2
Diablo 2
Half Life gets an honourable mention, but wasn't really my sort of game.
We are no longer on the golden path, too much junk, but there are still golden games out there.
Minus about two games I think I smashed absolutely all of them for months as well mate. We have very much in common old friend!

Hmmm... most of the games I look back fondly on came out about 98-2000 or thereabouts. Not sure if that is because they were really good games or if they were just what I played when I was getting old enough to play computer games.

I'm gonna go with the 90's. It saw the release of the command and conquer and starcraft series. The nintendo 64 was out and was pretty good. It's about the last time nintendo was taken super seriously. It saw the creation of super smash bros., zelda ocarina of time and others. It also was at the time of the super nintendo which is fantastic.
Not saying games right now aren't great but i am nostalgic for the 90's stuff. I'd say before the gamecube was released it was at it's high point. Then shooters became everything. I'm not saying some shooters were bad. People loved goldeneye so much it got a re-make. Also as far as the n64 goes i really loved some of the other games like 'vigilante 8'.
Back then things were special. Thank god steam has got a lot of indie developer titles going these days. I find it a little insulting how consoles these days don't even supposedly have backwards compatibility. That is such an insult that we actually took a step back. At least tell me there's a market where you can buy them up again virtually.
-------------
I think i'd agree with Cthuluspy. That said half life 2 came out in 2004 so yeah that was a thing. To a lesser extent 'freedom fighters' (a game about a modern day alternate history with the soviets) during 2003 (still waiting for a sequel which i'm almost sure will never come thanks to 'kane and lynch' and maybe it was a little too patriotic for the usa for io interactive's tastes). I think i'm gonna say 2005 until maybe the start of 2012 was not that great for most games. These days with steam and indie games it has totally helped a ton. Also i could never give up xcom: enemy unknown or enemy within. I just hope there's a sequel soon enough or something.

Having just downloaded the original NES Castlevania on the Wii U, all I will say is.. obviously my gaming skills are not what they used to be!!
I guess when games like that were £40, rather than £4, you really had to get at them and make sure you got past the frustratingly difficult bits!

I would say Super Smash Bros. (find Halo a little overrated) instead, but this is a mentality I can agree with.

Smash is a great one, too and there's a lot of great memories there, but it's a lot more limited(even the WiiU version only allows 8). It's mostly that Halo was(and still is) one of those few games everyone in my group of friends can agree on and have enough systems, copies, and peripherals to play in a large group regardless of skill level.

I would say between 94-99 was the golden age, genres hadn't been set in stone, publishers dared to gamble to a far greater extent on new ideas and technologies where at the peak.
Is there anything that's even remotely had the impact that the mouse and 3d graphics had and pushed the boundries like they did.

Well, except Planescape: Torment, which was actually pretty damn buggy, I must respectfully disagree. I still play those old games even over today's new ones once the novelty of the latter has worn off.
Heroes of Might and Magic 3
Baldur's Gate 2 (and 1 once you've gained a few levels and can stub your toe without dying)
Planescape: Torment
Starcraft 1 (I can't believe no one's mentioned this one yet)
Honourable mentions to Shandalar and Dark Omen (for the quotes if nothing else), although those were actually pretty buggy as well.
Although I must add that among more recent games, Civ 4, SC2 and HoMM 6 have given me quite a bit of replay value as well.

Probably late 90's to early 2000's for me. Starting off with the first game that made me really think, "you know, there might really be something to video gaming as a hobby and story telling medium" in TIE Fighter: Collectors Edition and Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight. And then going through to early 2000's with Medieval: Total War and a whole host of excellent Star Wars and Star Trek games.
Of course, this period also includes Half Life and Homeworld...
Was it a golden age? Nah, probably not. But there's a whole load of games in that period I really like, whereas in the past 2 years, the only games I think I've actually been motivated to go out and buy on release was Arkham Origins and Dragon Age Inquisition...

This is a difficult question as every era had their moments, I am old enough experience the 8bit, 16bit development and so on,
The simplicity and well thought early games to the diversity of games during the PS1 and PS2, and now with online games added,

This is one of those threads where people who are older than me talk about how much better things were before in the time I started gaming isn't it? (As in chronologically, not literally saying things were better before I personally began playing video games)
Like everyone else my golden age was during High School, so for me it was 2006-2010. I discovered KotOR, played the hell out of Oblivion and Morrowind, was good enough at Company of Heroes to be able to confidently win 1v1 automatches. That was also the time of Mass Effect 1 and 2 and Dragon Age Origins. Most of my top 10 games are the ones that either came out at this time or ones I started playing around this time.
EDIT: Dragon Age Inquisition did not come out in between 2006 and 2010, meant to say origins

Nobody looks at all the bland, generic cars of today and says this is a golden era of cars. It doesn't matter that cars in the 50's and 60's were vastly inferior to modern cars. How can anybody seriously claim that the bland, generic DRM/DLC ridden entertainment boxes of today reflect any sort of golden age in gaming? Madness.
The golden decade of gaming was the 90's, no question. It had everything. Arcades were still relevant, PC gaming was at it's best, and consoles were still consoles. And that's to say nothing of the emergence of the Game Boy. Remember how much space stores like Best Buy used to dedicate to big box PC games? The decline of big boxes marks the end of the golden era of gaming.
Here's some stuff I bought a little while back...do you understand how freakishly huge that Lords box is? THAT is the golden era of gaming.
...and yes, I'm very proud of my rug. It really ties the room together.

Yeah, age and rose tinted glasses probably have something to do with it, but idk. For me it was about 1995-2000. The technology was starting to really develop enough to make games with depth and graphics, compared to the really old stuff like on the atari. Things were being *created* instead of rehashed like a lot of what comes out today. These days the technology and graphics are better, but most of the games feel lacklustre and cloned. The most 'recent' game i truly enjoyed was the witcher 2, the rest seem all eye candy and no substance. You kids get off my lawn!
