If Flayed ones didn't have shred and were troops, would they be worth taking?

They shouldn't be troops, unless there was a Flayed One supplement and you could play Overlords that were also succumbing to it. Otherwise, Necrons refuse to be near, respect, or use Flayed Ones. Therefor, why would they be the core of the army? Also, Shred is the one thing that made them good, as they were easily one of the worst units in the game in their previous incarnation.

Why would you take Flayed Ones in a shooty edition when you've got Warriors who cost the same but have a gun and can take a transport?

As stated, Shred is the very thing that makes them good.

Who isn't taking Flayed Ones? Flayed Ones are great.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

It would be fluffy for players wanting to play tomb worlds affected by the flayer virus. Flayed Ones are supposed to be infected rank and file, not "elite" soldiers in any way.

Also they didnt just gain shred, but +1 attack and AP5 on their claws. If you now add to the fact that we have deepstriking objective secured units available for cheapo points, it's still quite lucrative to use them as core to just drown the opponent in deepstriking bodies and snag his objectives that way, since they need to be utterly annihilated for him to relaim that objective.

Which is why I mentioned the supplement for it. Under most circumstances, however, Flayed Ones are not used by Overlords. Also, who would you be using Obj Sec anyway? Decurion. So them being troops wouldn't really benefit anyway.

unless there was a Flayed One supplement and you could play Overlords that were also succumbing to it

But there is such a supplement )
From Forge World. It is Imperial Armour (12, i think) -Fall of Orpheus
It has Overlords succumbing to madness, Flayed Ones as ttroops - and you can even give them shred (single-use, though)

Yes, this is true. Once Forge World updates it, it could be an option now that all of the models are usable.
