So my friend gave me a land raider for my Dbay but i never have even considered using one since they are so points heavy.

Deffinatly going to paint it and try it out. However what are some good builds for a single raider.
i have most flavor of marines something just fun about painting Marines

thanks for the suggestions Dakka

It costs a ton of points, but a unit of assault terminators or vanguard vets pouring out of a land raider is a beautiful sight to behold. I'd say grab Lysander or a Chapter Master plus 5 termies and have fun!

termies or vets are great, even just a tac squad with an HQ has a place in a LR. Depending on the type of LR you build and bring it has a lot of uses.

A full Sternguard squad has been a very useful piece used against me of late.

Better out of a Drop Pod, though.

If you can, get another and sink yourself into a big (1850+) game and run em full of termies.

do you play Black Templars? Its infuriating to see 16 models pop out of a LRC and get to assault.

Abuse the AV14 and know they will be the magnet of all your opponents rage and fire

Chaplains are also great due to Hatred. It really ups the effectiveness of your charges when all your guys are rerolling to hit.

Blood angel scouts with either a chaplain for rerolls to hit on their furious charge, or a Libby for rerolls to hit, or a priest to make them ws4 average and FNP. A combo of two of those IC's with 10 scouts in a redeemer or crusader is nice and cheap. Much cheaper than crazy chapter master + terminator deathstars. Baal strike force for the scouts will make them I5 on the charge, 3 attacks each at S5, with hopefully at least one IC squad buff for rerolls or fnp.

I threw some people for a loop when I set down two redeemers full of CCW/bp scouts and IC's as half my army at a 30 man itc tourney. Ended up in 3rd place with a 5-1 record.

Land Raiders make really thematic line of sight blocking terrain. If you feel the need, though, you can even pay points so that your army can use it briefly before it reverts back to terrain.

How so? Let's say you take a squad of Sternguard against a 20 man blob of necrons. With 4 attacks each on the charge (assuming +1 for two CCWs and 2 base), WS4 against WS2, you're hitting on 3's. Assume a 10 man squad plus a Chaplain, that's roughly 45 attacks. Hitting on 3's, you'll miss approximately 15 times. That's 15 extra possible wounds you lost. When you're wounding on 4s and they get a 4+ armor 5+ RP, having those extra hits can really help.

Trust me, as a guy who runs a Flesh Hounds unit, when your guys have no AP, having Hatred can really up the odds you kill something.

That and it also stops the chance of you having a hilarious moment of all your Thunderhammer Terminators whiffing terribly.

Melta, hope for a 5, pop it with 4 hull points left. Trust me, had this happen, it sucks.

Make it into a crusader and go crusading for heretics already.
Nothing more iconic then a bunch of THSS terminators waddling out and punching face.

It's not necessary because most of the time you are not assaulting 20 necrons with Sternguard. Most of the time you are assaulting a unit that has zero chance against the incoming assault. Plus, the chaplain could have been more models elsewhere in your list. If you are really concerned about it, assault with more than one unit.

You mean pop, smash, and then get shot off the table the next turn. Assault is really horrible in this game if you aren't using very specific units.

Landraiders would be a lot better (but still overcosted) if they could buy ceremite for 20pts.

Wraiths, TWC, beasts in general. Units have to be fast, tough, and not reliant upon a transport.

The thought of pouring even more pts into something not increasing the LR's offense is a bit nauseating.

Blowing up a nearby superheavy and have the explosion template scatter onto the Land Raider.

I keep wanting to try massed land raiders in an unbound marine version of an Armoured Battlegroup/Steel Host. I'm not convinced it'd be that great, but multiple (and I mean 5+) land raiders could start to strain your opponent's antitank potential.

My drop pod dreadnought with a Multi melta has a 4 for 4 record of one shotting land raiders turn one.

Ignoring the troops he has also killed when they go bang that means he currently has made 1000 points for a cost of 540 just on the armour.

3000 Points - Right Hands of the Emperor, Imperial Fists Successor
1000 Points - Right Hands of the Emperor Elite PDF force
Bolt Action 1500 pts US Army

Then, stick Kharn in it. Surround it with multiple units of Daemonkin Khornedogs. Advance. Let Kharn join a unit of dogs when they are ready to make a charge. Kill stuff.

The best LR by a long shot is the inq crusader with psybolts. Upgrading the st of every shot aside from the pintile mm. When you put a rad nade inquisitor, a couple of priests, some DCAs and crusaders in there, you get a beast!
