Hey folks! So after 15 years of 40k I've decided to take the plunge into Infinity. I've read the rules and it seems amazing! I'm also loving the models. I have a couple newb questions I'm hoping you could help me out with.
First off, what's up with all the books? I downloaded the N3 book, but I'm not finding any of the rules for Tohaa in there. And where do I find all the background/fluff stuff? The story is a huge reason why I play mini games and I need it to. For important stuff, like what my guys yell when they're charging into battle.
Second, I'm having a hard time picking what faction to start with. I love big scary aliens, but I've been there, done that. Mecha is awesome, and I'm a huge fan of any type of movement shenanigans. So all the airborne insertion stuff seems right up my ally. What army is best at that? PanOceana seems cool. Is there a TAG that can drop from the sky?
Thanks for the help!

The books gradually add rules to the game.
The N3 rulebook is the core. The Human Sphere rulebook adds various new rules, including the rules for Linked Teams (think along the lines of an actual squad). Paradiso adds more various rules, customiseable Spec Ops units and the Paradiso campaign system.
None of them are required to buy - all can legally be downloaded from Corvus Bellis website for free, without the fluff or artwork.
Storywise, Human Sphere expands to include the Aleph faction and the various sub factions (sectorials) for the existing factions. Paradiso introduces the Tohaa and the story of the Paradiso front against the Combined Army.
The only TAG that could aerial deploy was cut from the game (the Combined Army Caskuda).
For choosing a faction, I always recommend to go with the faction you like the visual aesthetics to. But I'm more of a visual player. Something to remember is you can pretty much buy units you like the look of without fearing that it's a bad purchase. There's no outright bad units in Infinity, and the 'sub par' units tend to more just be a bit situational.

All factions have a degree of deployment shenanigans they can do - be it airborne deployment, mechanised deployment, infiltration, etc.
Some factions do it more (and better) than others, but all factions can do it to some degree - this is a game of spec ops after all.
Movement shenanigans *after* deployment tend to be more limited however, except in rare cases such as models with Super Jump or Meta-Agility.

So many games, so little time.
So many models, even less time.
Screw it, Netflix and chill. |

So... Human Sphere and Paradiso are still up to date? I assumed those were rolled into n3 when it came out. Are the rules in the printed versions still accurate and the same as the PDF versions?

As of now the only changes to HS or CP rules is the FAQ HS+ CP pdf (hopefully they will update it as some questions still need answers). Everything else is unchanged, but truthfully most problems with HS and CP came from the rules interacting with the core N2 rules.

Thanks for the help!
Drop troops appear everywhere and everyone can build a drop-oriented force, but it tends to be an inflexible mono-build that doesn't work if the other guy's expecting it (i.e. if you start a mission by deploying two fusiliers he knows to cover his ass for when the drop army shows up); drop troops are very high risk/high reward. You will usually find yourself running two or three at most so you can have a firebase to support them and redundancy if they get exploded; I'd suggest Nomads, Ariadna, or the Combined Army if you like drop troops, they have a broader variety of AD units with more guns and better specialist options than the other armies.
As to TAGs none of them have AD but some have camouflage (most famously the PanO Cutter), which is a wacky deployment strategy more so than a wacky movement strategy but it is pretty shenanigansy.
If you're planning on playing a TAG-heavy army PanO, Nomads, and the Combined Army have the most choices, but before you go that direction I feel you might want to know that TAGs are not the one-model army-muching machine most new players think they are, they play much more like big infantry than they do like tanks, and they can and will lose firefights and explode if you overcommit them hoping their armour will protect them or get hacked and turn on your guys and kill a bunch because you don't want to shoot your own TAG. I have never seen anyone play two at 300pts; you need to take the TAG, any support it might need, and then any other units to fill roles the TAG doesn't and still make sure to have enough specialists for the mission, which can run to a lot of points. PanO and the Combined Army probably have the individually strongest TAGs but the Nomads' fit in with their army list and playstyle, and can accomplish a lot when supported properly. Automatically Appended Next Post: Mind also that Infinity has the best internal balance of any game I've ever played or heard of; it's much more about how you play what you've thrown together than what you've got.

Yeah, you'll need the paradiso BOOK if you want the fluff on the Tohaa (they were introduced in that book) - that's true of all the factions, though. Want the fluff or art, splash out for the books. Just want the rules/army lists? Download them. The story tends to move forward with each book, also. Not like 40k's perpetual 2 minutes to midnight doomsday clock.
The fluff for the Tohaa dovetails into the backstory of the game (both prior to human colonisation and during, especially with regards to the early manned colonisation missions.
There is no current TAG that can air drop. There used to be one, but it got squashed like a big bug (the exhrah faction got caught selling weapons to the enemy and their overlords decided this was not going to continue. The models were destroying moulds, too)
Drop troops can be powerful, but you need support from orders on the table to get stuff done. An all AD army will be starved of orders (your Lt MUST be on table before the orders phase or you WILL be gimped) and that's bad, since it's the orders that allow you to get stuff done.

The other problem with all-AD is that AD is a Full Order, so if you take an all-AD army you give the other guy a free turn since everyone has to use their orders to deploy.

All of the unit profiles, updated for N3, are in the relevant section in the 'archive' on the official website

Thanks guys! That's a lot of helpful info. One more question, is the Icestorm box still available? It seems like a pretty good deal and I'm interested in both factions.

Op:I should still be around. I even saw a copy in my FLGS. The only thing that you can't get is the limited edition CSU version, which I'm sure you will be able to do without.
I was just thinking about what I'd do if I faced a starting force of two Fusiliers...
Realise that a ton of AD stuff was on its way, set up shop in Suppressive Fire and fill the little sods with so many holes that it wouldn't even be funny...

It could be lots of Hidden Deployment. You might be about to find a Cutter right in your face.

You've mentioned downloading the rules for the Tohaa. Were do I do that? The stuff I've found on the infinity site doesn't include them. Automatically Appended Next Post: I get errors every time I try to download the unit profile file.

Are you not able to access this link hivetyrantman ?
http://www.infinitythegame.com/archivo/[ENG]_Unit_Profiles.pdf
Tohaa are p160 onwards.
If you can't find a special rule in the main rulebook, until they update the army builder and official website with a new wiki, I usually just type "Infinity <rule name>" into Google; you'll get taken to the old wiki page for the rule (which is still up for now)

Yes, whenever the unit profile PDF is like last week. Or do you mean the wiki hotlinks, we have to wait until CB gets the new wiki setup. V is taking bug reports and request on the official forum if there is a feature you would like you can ask for it there. Someone asking is why Army 5 now has color coded range bands if you want them.

The CB site has been up and down quite a bit in recent times. It was probably crapping itself when you tried to download the rules. Like it is at this very moment
The rules for the Tohaa are in the Campaign Paradiso ruleset. I'll PM you a dropbox link to them, and the Human Sphere rules. And the Errata.

Had my first test run with the Tohaa today (200pts, brought Neema triaded with an Ectros HMG and a Gao-Rael plus two Kamael and an Ectros), they're much scarier than the raw stats would indicate. The Ectros are much tougher than they look, and the firepower that comes out of a well-deployed Triad in ARO is incredible to behold.

So i decided to go with the Nomads. I just ordered the icestorm set today. Should be here Friday and then I can start getting some games in with my son. I'm loving the idea of a nomad lists with some hackers, a tag, and a bunch of remotes. Of course with some backup dudes for orders

Ah nomads, the bane of my existence! I started this game two years ago and went through so many changes that it is insane. I started out with Haqq, went over to combined, and then yu jing, then finally settled on Pan O and Ariadna. I have to say though the nomads have some beautiful models and they're always fun to play against! You'll like them a lot, at least I hope you do, and when I played against nomads I found out a painful lesson. Yes, my cutter is awesome and it can mow down anything that steps in it's way, within reason. It will really go to town against light infantry and run hog wild. It is, however, not especially fun when that awesome tag is possessed and now I have to take down my own tag

First lesson to learn running TAGs. If you have a hacker nearby you can Exorcism it quickly and easily without expending command tokens or committing firepower to blowing up your own model.
If you're going for Nomads with a TAG on the field the Icestorm recommended expansion list is a great place to start.
