Subject: Assassins 40k Boardgame (GW) - Pics + Info + Video on Page 1 - Preorder 25th of April
I picked a copy of the game up. It looks OK (haven't played yet -- still assembling the minis). I suspect it'll make a nice intro to the setting for potential new players, especially younger ones.
Minis are fine. The new assassin sculpts are lovely obviously, the cultists are great minis as you all know (as is the Terminator Lord), and the three basic CSM look all right with backpack / bolter swaps with some of my spare DV Chosen. Seems like a reasonable deal all told. I'm looking forward to trying out the assassin formation in the next tournament.

This is what makes GW so frustrating. Nice idea, terrible execution (pun intended). Make a nice intro game for potential new players, but include models that are made up of 10 fiddly parts, and slap a £75 price tag on it.

OK so I picked up my copy of this on Monday but have only recently just had a chance to have a proper look and play around with it.
So I got the game from my local independent (Dark Sphere) so didn't pay full price for it - got 25% off so £57.
For that price I don't think it's too bad - the 4 assassin models will probably be about £15-18 each when released so I reckon I get the game for free.
The assassin models are lovely and the fact you don't have to use the scenic base parts is a nice touch.
The other models - I was very disappointed that these were not new models, and I already have way more cultist models than I would ever want but in all fairness to GW you do get a fair amount of models in this game - it's just a shame they are a bit dull (IMHO).
The game - the production quality of the components is high. When I saw the photos in WD I was disappointed that there are only 3 card board sections. However the way the random rooms fit on the board is quite clever, not seen this mechanic elsewhere and it works well.
The card etc are nice and the rulebook is pretty clear and concise.
However the game itself so far just seems a bit "meh".
I am already bored of counting the number of squares between models, not including walls and diagonals that are actually quite hard to see (this game would work so much better in 3D).
And there are all the status activations - this guy is alert if this but not this blah blah blah.
In all honesty it feels very clunky, and not the board game of Metal Gear Solid that they were trying to create.
Maybe once the rules become more ingrained in my head it will be fun - but for new gamers I don't think this will be a fun game, unless you like counting squares....
So not terrible - but I reckon the main reason for buying this would be the assassin models, the game is OK but not great, but if like me you think of it as a freebie that comes with the assassins it's not so bad.

When its stated like that, its crystal clear just how obscene GW prices are for pieces of small plastic. £15-18 EACH!

I have similar feelings StraightSilverMade. The game itself isn't bad at all. It's pretty good. Some clunky stuff, but the production quality is high and the experience of playing co-op is good... but it's not tight enough and the balance seems slightly off.
It goes without saying the minis are excellent - incredibly detailed and IMHO worth it.
I used to play with the Assassins in my 40k games way back when, so it's great to field them with minis that look like they belong in 2015.

There are all sorts of thing in this world that are only small pieces of plastics that are well over £15

But the prices sure are getting big.
I just think it's crazy how quickly people became so casual about it.
"Oh it's only $30 for a guy, that's not so bad." That's insane!! Ten-man squads used to cost that much! The metal characters used to be HALF that price!!

Yeah. I had somebody try to convince me that the game was a "great deal" because it was basically the retail value of the four assassin models.
OOookay.
Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

I thought you meant the 20 oz singles, honestly.

Got my copy last night and assembled all the minis. I have played 40k for over 15 years and have to say that their plastic minis are looking fantastic! All four assassins look great, and the "large feet" problem isn't so bad in real life when you have the minis in hand. The terminator sorcerer is as great as always (I cut mine up further as I love customs and conversions). I have no issues with the cultists (always good to have more), however the three chaos marines are a bit bland. I have already made plans to use DV chaos marines who are more decorated and in action poses.
I played my first game today. As for gameplay, I LOVE the cooperative style (like zombicide, it's great for a group of friends or if you have kids). I had read the poor reviews of this and thought it was going to be too simple or boring, but the game was a blast! If you are not careful the cultists can make your day bad in a jiffy, and the sorcerer... well his multimelta cut down two of my assassins, with his staff killing poor torq :( I ended up winning but not by much!
The game is great for a quick game in the 40k universe with set up time of less than two minutes. The room mechanics is actually cool. I did have an issue with the cost of the game (got it at a discount, under $120), however I looked at the prices of all minis involved just like GW's other boxed starter or campaign sets ($25 each plastic assassin clam pack, $30 terminator lord, $15-20 of cultists, and some cheap chaos marines from the paint set = approx. $150 of minis. The boards are far better than my space hulk 3rd and 4th edition tiles, and the cards tokens, and rooms are all done in great quality (tokens have a plastic feel to them... far better than any cardboard tokens).
I for one am very satisfied with my purchase and hope GW makes more mini games like this as 40k itself is getting too diluted and hyper inflated (esp when they remake codex books every year or so - eldar, imperial knights, etc).

As one of the many who yelled at the top of their lungs to bring out more games like Space Hulk, I'll give GW a grudging thumbs up.
Great idea for a game. If I come across some spare clink, I'll probably pick it up.

Do the the rules require the cultists to be armed differently?

Yes, you have some with CCWs and Autopistols and some with Autoguns.
The sprues they give you in the box are the same as the $15 box, which contains both Autopistol/CCW and Autoguns.
It gives you one card for each type of enemy though.

Thanks. I'm waiting on my set but figured I'd paint some of my mountain of unpainted Cultists before it arrives.

My FLGS has one in stock. Picked it up. Drooled over the models. Then remembered all of the fething games in my house I don't get to play now, plus 200+ miniatures sitting unpainted from Reaper Bones I and Bones II.
Put it back on the shelf. I'll have to let this one go.

Nice to see a positive review of it to be fair.
Do you find the randomness of it adds or detracts? Is it wildly random or just a few events?

So this is kind of cool, I'd like to get the cultists, Terminator Sorceror and obviously the Assassins, but more than that I want the game. I like co-op board games and I think this could be fun. So I went on eBay to see if I could get a fairly cheap set (so far no real luck, lowest buy it now set was $110) but I found someone selling just the game for $1 if I get it that would actually be great as I have plenty of Spec Ops and evilness miniatures from Infinity, Dark Age and now Maelstrom's Edge and Human Interface Nakamura Tower Kickstarters that'll be ending soonish. Sure it won't be the same as the much touted fancy plastic 40k Assassins, but I'm mostly in it for the game, and having another game to play with miniatures I already have for only a couple dollars would be great. I won't bid anymore on it if someone bids against me, but if I get the board game without the miniatures it would still be great. If I do lose it, I'll just buy the full game for myself and take the hit to the wallet lol.

I'm pretty sure a call to GW would end satisfactorily for you (try the retailer first if not GW).
Bad luck though chap, is it just the game in a box or was there more protection than that?
Back on topic, more opinions of he rules would be great for those that have given it a spin. Single player on this interests me so if anyone has had a play through of that I'd love to know how you rate it.
