I posted this weeks ago to literally zero responses in another section, so im giving the PM section a chance before i completely scrap the idea (sadly). Ill probably be sending out PMs to my painting buddies on this site and everyone that participated last year in hopes that this can get off the ground for year 2. anyways...

Hey guys, so its been about a year since last years painting competition and I'm starting to have the itch to put another one on. But id just like to gauge the interest before starting it up. Firstly if you are unfamiliar with me, i am Bebop (duh) and once upon a time i wanted to host a painting competition that really pushes painters to take out all the stops by presenting unique painting challenges. Last year i started off the (hopefully yearly) competition by challenging entrants to paint the same basic imperial guard model, but to the highest standard possible. With that said....what would this years Challenge be? Well...glad you asked...This years challenge is name, "THE TALISMAN". The challenge, is to paint a miniature, as if it were completely (or mostly at least) carved out of a gemstone*. This obviously is not exactly easy to pull off, so its gonna require some buckling down but i believe it will show up some really super cool and creative entries.
*(Im still toying with the idea of allowing it to be anything natural material, be it crystal wood stone slate gem marble. etc....to be discussed...)

As far as prize support, I'm not sure yet, Last year Galorn was able to give us some heads and bits from his company in exchange for Ads and just the contribution to the community. Im open to suggestions....even cash...i have vintage minis lying around that i could donate...etc etc...whatever whets your appetite
I know there are always paint comps floating around, and maybe this "challenge" appeals to you?? Guys let me know all of your thoughts and ideas and whether or not you want to join. Feel free to answer here or PM me. Will i be seeing you on the race track?? I hope so

Well, the first time I saw this I was a little put off by the theme, but I've just had an idea or two that could work, so count me tentatively in!

I assume any type of mini can be entered?

Good luck getting entries, this could be a cool challenge! I think your second option of any natural material might open it up a bit!

@ Paradigm: lol, yeah i know. Its a bit of a tough sell.Last years challenge was pretty restricting too but a great success. Thats kind of also why i want to do it. Honestly i think its really cool to see what people come up with! My only thought about allowing all natural materials is that stone and wood would be easier to pull off then glass or crystal so id imagine itd be kind of hard to judge in that regard? what do you think? And yes any entry can be enetered but the whole idea is that its not really a 1/28 er whatever sized mini youre painting, but a 1/1 sized talisman lol. And obviously some models would be a lot harder to paint than others.

I'd be interested thought for me it depends on timeframe. I'm also trying to get in on the other comps as well like Para's monthly challenge.

I like the idea of any material. Although thinking about it, do things like painting a treeman, wood count? or elementals as their element? lol.

Fair point. I would say that even if you open it up to wood/stone, those techniques can still be taken to a very high level, at which point the quality speaks for itself regardless of techniques; I'm sure someone could paint something wooden to a standard 10 times higher then what I can do with gemstones!

I'd say do it, simply as a wider range of entrants is always better, but of course it's your call!

@ckig id hope you can join. last years comp i think i gave like 2-3 months deadline. i just saw para painting comp a few weeks ago myself (which i will join next round hopefully myself as well!). i tend to lapse for months then come back so i always miss something in the community

Sounds like an awesome idea for a comp.

Not something that I see myself having the skill to do though. However if you need a judge I'll readily put my hand up for that.

Something like an Ice Golem or Glass Golem or Crystal Golem. Mr. Google can help if you use those terms.

Mhm as Red says. And It can be of any natural material. Also think broaches or scarabs, jeweled beetles etcetc. Basically instead of painting the mini as it is, it's been carved from some natural material.

oh... thanks mates, well... for better or worse... i am in... i am curiously currently very into the golem thing... that could be some cool work...

and just to clarify... no plastic or other "non- natural" materials to be used?

Thanks for the effort, Bebop, even if my hobby queue is too packed to allow me to join. I very much enjoy these online painting comps, and am glad that there are those brave souls out there in webland that put them on

Guys, don't worry about hurting my feelings as far as joining this competition. I understand this years topic might seem a little exclusive, but that is the point. Though it is not meant to literally exclude people from joining, it is a abstract and far out challenge that may turn some people off. I will completely understand if this never gets off the ground but it was bumping around in my head too long and I wanted to put it out there to the community. Since last year's challenge went so well I figured it was worth at least see your guys' thoughts. No doubt this challenge is significantly more difficult than last years, but it doesn't have to be iThere s a lot of room for creativity....

well.... just to inform you....i am currently opening to new horizons... i am carving out of insulation form a crystalline life form... tricky... but i intend to paint it later on as a diamond troll... currently i am on version 2.0.... i will later on show some pics of the builds...

(i literally have no idea how to paint it tho...)

the idea of this competition is not dead yet...?! right!... will prove that today as my own hand carved crystal troll is about to get revealed...made from insulation foam and looking sparkly and pretty^^...

washes need to dry...
