One thing I've found is if I have to revert my car to a more pansy version, I'll set them, then exit out all the way until I'm able to drive/run again... Then go back in and change things back to the more powerful version.

I'm glad that levelling Max himself isn't tied to any quests. I've become a Road Warrior by simply sticking to the first two territories, which may or may not have made me too well prepared for the areas ahead.
Only complaints so far are that mine clearing is rather tedious and that there's no real variety in the mini-bosses you need to kill in order to get more paint jobs for your car.

Beat it just now, aside from needing to track down the last three historic relics I'm quite pleased with my progress, having cleared out all territories and upgraded all strongholds before moving on.
The story ending itself was rather.. dark, but it fits with the overall themes of the setting and whatnot.
Icing on the cake for completing the game though, those three extra rewards, plus the ability to keep on playing, most excellent!

How do you clear mines? The game tells me to "use the dog in Chumbucket's buggy", but I have no idea where it is.

You need to drive around and keep an eye out for patches of burnt out cars, that be minefields. Another option is to take the buggy and dog for a spin, the dog will start to bark when it catches a scent, it will look in the direction you need to go.
Could be you haven't unlocked the buggy yet, but it won't be that long, it's a pretty early unlock.
In other news, I'm fiddling around with the camera mode they've built into this one.

Ah, then I haven't done that yet. I figured since you meet the dog and drive the buggy very early on in the game it's already unlocked.

At the moment, just clearing out the last opposition in Jeets area, pretty much 3 minefields and a convoy, Then will head into Gutgash's area. Saving the story for a bit.
With the Jaw, I actually found something interesting. I unlocked the jack, then customized her totally out from the jack from the convoy mission. and got through the jaw in a totally tricked out vehicle, which made it just oh so easy. Didn't even need a restart on that.
I had a movie moment last night. I got caught in a storm, with a convoy, side rammed another car, and it went airborne and blew up. went on to murder the convoy, didn't lose much health or need a break either.

I've done everything but collect all the scrap locations and races at this point, I think I've personally 100%'ed it as far as I'll take it I think, because I didn't like the racing segments.

Generally, I like the races, so long as I get a heavier ride (when I'm not doing an Opus War run).... the lighter option cars, I have a problem with hitting a barrel then spinning out if I don't hit them absolutely square... It's annoying to say the least.

I finished 80% of the optional stuff while I'd only completed just 36% of the story missions at the time and it definitely helps having the upgrades.
I just finished up all the story stuff earlier tonight and thought it was pretty decent over all. I was having a heck of a time with the gas town race until I unlocked the slick rubba tires, As soon as I did that I won on the first re-attempt. While the top speed was unchanged the extra handling makes such a huge difference in both that race and the other death races.
Only minor gripe I have about the game is that the maps can be a bit difficult to read at times as it's not always readily apparent where missions are and the icons can be pretty tiny. Even playing it on a 50" tv I had some difficulty reading some of the text. (this was also an issue when I was playing the dead rising games) They should have an option that let you increase the font size.
It would also be nice if the clean up crew was automatic feature from the beginning, or at least a bit quicker to unlock in each region. It's annoying to have to get out of the car every time you destroy a vehicle to gather such tiny amounts of scrap and by the time I'd unlocked the crew I'd already reduced the threat levels so that the patrols and vehicle combat had dropped to almost nothing which makes the auto gathering largely pointless. There's also no time for collecting scrap during the convoy missions so you lose a lot of scrap save for what's taken from the last car (or two).
It doesn't get in the way of it being a good game, just minor venting about what could be improved.
End of game spoiler:

Minor beef with first-person driving: the roof-line sits way too low. The top of the windscreen/edge of the roof should not be in the center of the driver's sight-line.

That's because the camera is in front of Max's face, not in it. If you turn the camera around you can see him scowling at you.

Picked this up when it was on sale for 15$, decent game, animations are a bit clunky as is control response... max's jump animation and run animation look god aweful to me,
but the cut scenes and general feel of the story telling are quite good, I find myself enjoying them as much or more then the actual game play.
Worth the 15$, but maybe not more then 20$,

Can't really argue with that, it doesn't bring anything particularly new to the gaming table, but its competently executed, takes advantage of modern hardware to provide some visually-stunning landscapes and setting-appropriate images.
