Progress update! lots of pictures to follow.

Finished some painting on the tower and built a bridge connecting to the mesa. I've got an elevator that's going to be added into the center of the tower and still need to do some paint work on the base and panels. eventually, I'm going to add a crane to the top of the tower, but I'm trying to get this finished by the 24th for armies on parade, so it will have to wait. Thinking of using the top of the tower to display my dakka jet in the meantime.

The mesa was part of another project that I wound up scrapping, which resulted in some chipping on the plaster coating. Not sure if I should add another layer of plaster to the entire piece or just try to cover those spots and repaint. The turret is made from a combination of rhino, dakka jet, & battlewagon pieces with the rest being filled in with plasticard.

As stated at the beginning of the thread; My main goal is to push myself to become better at painting & scratch building so any constructive criticism is greatly appreciated!

Enjoy!

Love the tower and rock out crop gun, nice idea.

Thanks guys,

I've got some more progress from painting last night. I have to say that I am really happy with the blues on the turret from a technical standpoint and was almost tempted not to cover it up with the weathering.

It feels a little daunting having to get this all done in 10 days, but that also means daily updates on the thread!

Still have work on the tower, turret, bunker & mesa.
Also have to base my 2X2 AoP board, but that's just going to be some textured spray paint and airbrushing some dirt paths here and there.

Made some more progress on the AA turret piece last night. Took a lot longer than I thought to get this piece painted & detailed (roughly 3 hours) but I really like how it came out. Trying to keep these minor updates as spoilers so I don't flood the page with pictures.

the main shell was made using half of a ping pong ball with bits added here and there. I was able to get the weld lines by using one of those little bottles of T-Shirt paint to give a raised effect. One of the things I'm really trying to get better at is painting a nice lense effect on the optics, but I seem to have issues getting the paint to come off of my brush for such a small area.

All done on the turret. May have gone a little heavy on the weathering but I think the end result came out pretty well.

Woahh! Gork's teeth! That is one awesome looking turret. The weathering definitely isn't OTT imo. Any tips on how you achieved such realistic-looking rust?

Thanks man! I think i'll get the bridge taken care of tonight & finish up re-plastering / painting the mesa on Saturday. Painting aside, my main concern right now is figuring out where to display my dakka jet. Thinking of building a crow's nest on top of the tower to act as an Anchor.

Thanks! I've been experimenting with various rust techniques and referencing a lot of pictures online. I'm still playing with the effect but have found that a combination of techniques works best to achieve the effect. Without getting too lengthy, I pretty much lay down a dark brown base and sponge bestial brown, mixing in some white or orange for each layer after that. I try sponge in a little bit less on each layer as I move up.
For the streaks, it's just agrax in many many layers with a thin brush. I also found that staying away from metallics helps to bring the rust together as a whole, as it gives the surrounding metal pieces a dingey look, especially if you give it a light sepia coat, as if it's not far off from rusting as well.

All done!

Unfortunately my cell phone camera is not giving the best quality so im working on getting some better pics. One thing that I forgot to mention is that there is a chance that I wont be able to enter this into the competition due to a lack of actual GW models, which would be kind of a bummer. But on the bright side, I still get to share it with you all!

I can't offer you any criticism mate as I think it's all excellent stuff! the scratch builds are pure Ork and done so well and your painting style for the terrain is something i'd like to know how you did it? it's very evocative and I am pretty keen to se what else you can do!

Thanks for the kind words guys!

I ran most of my stuff by the local store manager and he let me know that they are a lot more lenient on orks due to their specific "looty" nature. The answer I got was pretty much as long as it's not 100% scratchbuilds & is a clear representation of orks in 40k I should be good. Just awaiting a final confirmation since so much is scratchbuilt before I lug everything over to the store.

Thanks man! The rock terrain was insulation foam that I glued together in blocks and cut out with a hot wire cutter. After that I covered it up in plaster (which chips very easily) and spray painted it with "iron oxide" krylon paint. After that I did high lights / low lights with various shades of brown with the airbrush, detailing pronounced edges with some very light brown / white to give the edged look on the rocks. I'll wind up building a few more in the future & post the process if that helps at all.

Well guys, I didn't bring home the gold, but had a fantastic time seeing all of the entries for Armies on Parade. There was so much great inspiration at the event, and I almost considered buying some admech to start a new army... but who am I kidding, I could never leave da orks behind! We also got a cool little write up on a miniature Blog by Viet Nguyen (link below). Oh! and as it turns out, there were a few people that recognized my work from Dakka! Pics below!, check out the link for all of the entries. http://www.senseiswag.com/blog/

Couldn't agree more. Not to diss the effort that won gold, but it looks like they really phoned it in with those lightning bolts.

Yours looks awesome Nova. It's cool to see that your painting skills stand up to the pretty unforgiving test of being put on display in a shop!

You got anything planned for next year (hopefully something equally Orky)?

Took a little bit of a break from the hobby to focus on some personal stuff. Just started working on my next project which will be a Mek boss converted out of a daemon prince body. I don't have his back half so i'm having to get crafty with some green stuff and mechanical bits. I'll post some pics as soon as I've made a little more progress.

Got some time this weekend to start up my Big Mek project. The plan is to put a twist on the shokk attack gun by making it into a huge sniper rifle for this guy to lug around. Given the range of the Shokk attack gun I thought it would be somewhat fitting.

Is that a Killa kan section I see there very clever use for it, but that hand looks brilliant maybe a scale shot to get an idea of the size would be cool.

Thanks guys,

The backpack is mostly killa kan bits with ither pieces sprinkeled in. It hangs a little low on the model but I plan to add some servo arms coming out of the two holes i the back and some tesla looking bits to bulk it up a bit.

Used some sticky tac to atach the arm and hand for a better idea of scale. Its missing a thumb but ill add that once I attach the gun handle.
