The Office of Personnel Management, specifically. Although, it seems the story is still developing and more agencies may be hit. So, not the kind of news I wanted to come home to after a day of work. Just what I wanted to do for the next few days/weeks/months: check my credit report constantly to make sure there are no surprises. I am a government employee, and while I do not work for OPM, they do the background checks for most federal agencies, so, yeah...

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

We all knew there would be another security breach.
It was just a matter of time. Nothing you connect to the internet is truly secure. Remembering that will go a long way to avoiding these issues.

I just wonder if things like one less tank, one less jet, or one less redundant administrative official could have meant enough money for the one extra computer security expert that could have prevented this. That's an exaggerated over simplification, I know.

Aren't the NK's super-hackers based under a laundrette in China or something similarly Get-Smart-esque?
I always wonder when I read about these things how essential it is that certain types of data are remotely accessible.

The fundamental problem is that the internet and WWW were not designed securely to support the vast range of sensitive operations now carried out on them.
Plus, you've got no well-researched, robust standards for creating security, and a population that mostly has little idea about the hazards and created a lot of potential breaches of themselves.

Unfortunately it is a risk of our interconnected world. Very annoying for those who lost data. I am sure we will see many more, but at least for now it is just lost data. Hopefully it has been spotted soon enough and will be dealt with fast enough to stop too much damage. Sooner or later someone will take a swipe at the critical systems that are vulnerable and can cause immediate tangible damage, like this:
http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/12/22/us-southkorea-nuclear-idUSKBN0K008E20141222
Tannhauser42 wrote:I just wonder if things like one less tank, one less jet, or one less redundant administrative official could have meant enough money for the one extra computer security expert that could have prevented this. That's an exaggerated over simplification, I know.
Having worked in government this is something that annoys me no end. People see you as useless, a waste of money etc until they need you. People scream to protect front line services and cut back office "bureaucracy" until they need benefits paying, payroll doing, goods ordering etc.
One less tank or jet, until we realize we are one short. That extra security expert is a redundant administrative official in IT, until something like this happens. Cutting budgets in one place and moving it to another on the basis of the latest crisis is one of the worst things that already happens in government.
And, no, one more security expert would not have solved it, any more than one more tank would win a war.

You can be "annoyed" all you want by my statement, but I am directly affected by this, so I think my annoyance factor and my experience as a US government employee count, too. We literally do have instances where congress forces the military to buy things the military said they do not need (solely because it was congressman X's pet project or the factory was in his district). We do have useless, redundant, and/or incompetent people that worm their way into jobs where they can sit in an office, drink coffee all day, and make everybody else work harder to make up for their incompetence. It took us FOUR YEARS to get rid of that one in our office, and we know of others.

Pretty much what I was thinking.
And then they will go to war with a bunch of untrained farmers armed with AK47's and get utterly hammered.
And then in 10 Downing Street the star spangled phone will start ringing and the collective force of the entire British Army will groan, look at each other and say 'Bloody hell, they've gone and done it again'
And a few weeks later we will be fighting Americas war for them. Again.

I think returning to old school paperwork and locked filing cabinets might be a smart move. It's the last thing they'll suspect.

Had a friend who renovated a room in a new house. When knocking down the wall, the space behind it had been filled with loose insulation and FLOPPY DISKS. The 3.25" variety. For whatever reason, he didn't see what was on them, but you just reminded me of this story.

You mean, half of Russia uses pen and paper, the other half pen and unfolded envelope?
