So, I must admit...I'm going grav cannon crazy with my lists. 4 cannon dev squads, 1 cannon in each tac squad. Crazy.
Well, now I'm thinking about putting 2 in my Sternguard vet squads. Is that overkill? I tend to only put combis in my vet squads so I can use thier special ammo.
Are grav cannons that worth it?

No. You need more conventional weaponry to do two things
- kill hordes, kill vehicles

I would especially not throw Grav Cannons on your Sternguard now; their Special Ammo now benefits from Battle Doctrines! Also, others are correct, you need to diversify your weaponry or you will be hard-countered by some popular Xenos armies like Orks, Nids, and Demons. Automatically Appended Next Post:
I just won a game a few weeks ago partially because my opponent's Grav weaponry couldn't crack my Bunker with my Warlord sitting snug as a bug inside it.

They were granted hull points and are, iirc, treated as immobilized vehicles. I think grav works, but... not sure.

Immobilize x2 doesn't work because a building doesn't even roll on that chart.
Otherwise i think it should still glance.

Check again, I forget but in the grav entry or building entry it specifically states buildings are not effected by grav weapons.

As I remember buildings ignore ALL glancing hits. They are only affected by PENETRATING hits.
So they ignore grav.

I thought they still took Glancing Hits, they just had additional results for penetrating results. I've also believed that because buildings can't be immobilized, they were immune to the extra HP of damage from an immobilized Grav result.
Edit: I just realized that Grav was supposed to have no effect on buildings like another poster said. That just gave my bunker a +1 in my list-building from now on!

Seriously people, read the grav rule. It has nothing to do with the bunker and everything to do with the graviton.

What terrible players are you facing if they're crying about having no effect on fortifications basically?

The guy that teleported near it with his death star, and then had no other target, as the bunker blocked line of sight to normal targets of value.
When he declared it as a target, I informed him of the rule, and it was too late to redo the deep strike. With the deathstar out of position, it cost him the game (reavers and grotesques advanced, charged, and killed the death star). So after a bit of whining, he commented that lessons hard learned are best remembered.
Judging from the comments in this thread, he would not have been the only one to learn the hard way.

That's why I always run doubles of drop flamers, grav, and melta when I play hard core lists. A little of everything gives you the opportunity to deal with fortifications, which btw die to a regular roll of 6 on the damage table so any penetrating melta shot has a 1/2 chance to destroy it in one shot.
