If it is, I don't really care
I'm just wondering what the Dakka community has on their 8th edition wishlist, or what you think may be coming.
I'd personally love for CC to receive some reworking in 8th, though I doubt that'll happen.

IF GW stays keeps the trend they've been on, we may see 8th in another year. If they stick more to previous editions, probably another 2-3.
At this point, I'd be all for a total 3E style reboot. The game has run away on itself, with rules coming from four or five different sales channels, with increasingly more powerful and less playtested stuff, and a sense of scale that's completely lost itself, coupled with now what are clearly "pay2play/pay2win" rules attached to web bundles.
But, who knows what we'll see. We could say 8th in 2016, we could see it in 2018.
I'd really just like to see a return to 5E with 4E wound allocation, 4E Victory Points, 7E rapid fire and "move & shoot" heavy weapons/vehicle shooting rules, and maybe a couple other tweaks. I would love to play that.

Too early? THIS. IS. 40K!
It's never too early to crank up the rumour mill or speculating on what could stay or go in the next evolution of our beloved rulebook.
In the seventeen years since I entered this hobby...
3rd edition (lasted 6 years)
4th edition (lasted 4 years)
5th edition (lasted 4 years)
6th edition (lasted 2 years)
7th edition (lasted 1 year and counting...)
...it does seem like the editions last shorter and shorter. 2016 would make 2 years for 7th. At this rate we'll start having an edition every year by 2017.

I would love to wait 3-5 years even if they completely redo the rules and release the codex's with the new rules at once (as the rules change may make previous codices unable to be used).
The likelihood of something like this happening however is very unlikely I feel.

I would hope that it is too early, but the trends suggest otherwise. Such a release would be beneficial to GW in the short term, and as it stands it doesn't look like GW will have the opportunity to worry about anything other than the short term.

Knowing GW, and how they seem to absolutely hate the idea of the game being played with ANY kind of competitive intent whatsoever, I wouldn't be surprised if 8th edition removed point costs.
The army building section of the book will literally say straight up "discuss with your opponent what kind of forces you would like to have on the table."
For my wish list, I'm hoping they nix random pregame BS, nix the current version of overwatch, either allow deep strike assaults or make deep strike shooting squads snapshot, destroy random charge range with 1000 nukes, fix the other minor bugs with assault, remove challenges, MOVE ALL METHODS OF MOVING MODELS TO THE MOVE PHASE to make games against 100+ models not take 4 hours, finally make the chainsword do something, fix the silly AP all or nothing issue, fix the psychic phase so we don't have 3 warp dice vs 30...
And that doesn't even get into formations and the like. :/

Instead of waiting for the crappy replacement of crappy 6th to be replaced by a crappy replacement, maybe just write your own version of the rules and be done with it
I'd be extremely surprised if they fixed *any* of the stuff in the previous post, let alone all of it. This sort of crap is how GW thinks the game should work

Because then you end up with "timhammer," "johnhammer," and mikehammer," along with 50 other competing standards. Also tournaments are a thing.
If a lot of people were willing to play "zagmanhammer" from his recent fan-erratas, I would be on board for that. His version looks all around better than GW's. The only issue being that everything new that GW puts out has to be errata'd in.

I would say that it is far too early for GW to go for 8th edition 40k. GW is probably going to try and complete the 7th edition update cycle for all the armies. We're also getting to the point where GW can't just make one kit and some formations and call it a new codex. With Finecast being discontinued, there are going to be a lot of armies in need of major overhauls in terms of kits. The CSM stuff in particular is either ancient, an ugly Finecast abomination, or both.
This might sound like we'll have 7th edition next year at this rate, but keep in mind the wild card: Fantasy 9th edition. I have a funny feeling that GW are going to be hardselling a lot of Fantasy model kits to coincide with the rapid releases of 9th edition Fantasy army books.
Here's another thing to keep in mind: GW's release schedule has been working. This last quarter/year, it posted a financial statement that wasn't terrible. "Mixed outlooks/fortunes" isn't much better, but at this point GW will take what they can get. What better way to start anew then by rebooting Warhammer Fantasy and packing their release schedule full of new models and army books to support that reboot?
Even when GW completes the update of every army to 7th edition, GW has also shown that they are more than willing to create a new army/faction from underrepresented pieces of the lore. See Harlequins, Imperial Knights, and Skitarii/Mechanicus. Then there are the yearly campaign books and releases to think about.
In short, I don't think that Warhammer 40,000 8th edition will be coming anytime soon. I f I had to put money on it, I would say that we're stuck with 7th edition for at least two more years, probably three.

My wish list:
-Infiltrate and Outflank may charge upon coming in.
-Sniper weapons get a hefty buff, such as 100% precision shots
-nerf to gargantuan/Superheavies. Remove Stomp 6 result, allow invulns vs S 6 result. Gargants cause a -1 to wound rolls on any weapon that always wounds on a certain result (sniper poison Fleshbane).
-Pretty much every D3 in the entire rule set should be a 2. Victory points, extra wounds to SHs and Gargants on explode/ ID results....they're mostly just irritating applied to things that have no reason to be random.

Well, to be honest, I sort of feel like we're already in 7.5e -- ever since the Decurion. We're in a new age of 40k, where what matters more is formations and superformations with tiered bonuses, or allies with powerful combinations and synergies. More so than than units with buffing characters and deathstars or msu or mechanized lists. I don't think 8e is "just around the corner", but somehow, I really hope that the 7.5 system can be extended to other factions. This would make me very happy, as we've been having a lot of fun using the new force organization, but most of that fun has been largely limited to the 2015 updated factions. Also, for all the griping, I think 7e is actually pretty fun. The balance issues are there, sure, but they're not too hard to fix if you're in a league or club, or playing amongst friends.

I'd like to see the psychic phase adopt the warhammer magic phase properly or just go away, the current system is based on 6th ed magic and it was by far the worst pile of crap magic phase we've ever had, mastery levels translate into magic levels very easily, it would also allow new models to make a come back, level 4 Nicassar psykers for tau, wierdboys for orks, crons get dwarf like shenanigans like dwarfs, I'd also like to see an "archeotech" list of common tech items found by the various races, so the main rulebook could contain things like power fists and points costs etc. Or relic weapons like a phosphex grenade, tellyportas or something.

I'm pretty much the same. The only difference for me is that I'd like to see the whole snapfire mechanic either removed or changed to be -2BS. As it stands, it just feels like a grandiose time-wasting mechanic.
However, this is GW we're talking about, so I look forward to absolutely none of my issues with 7th being addressed, and yet more random tables and rules-ignoring crap from Apocalypse.

It should last at least 4 years.
However, the frequency with which GW releases new codices, models, and dataslates suggests that the cycle will be much shorter, say 2 years.

They're already pretty insanely good. Extremely safe deepstriking for 35pts for just about any unit in the codex? That then gets to operate as an AV12/12/12 scoring unit an opponent often has to deal with on top of that? And can come in turn 1? That's pretty insane.
If you want it to come in and slam into things, it'd need to start costing a whole lot more if you're gonna start wanting to bring in a whole bunch of marine-delivering pie-plates.

I've actually thought the same thing.
Hell, you'd expect it to do some pretty significant damage to vehicles, too (and take some in return, obviously). I mean, there are rules for vehicles ramming each other, and these things are coming down from orbit.
However, as Vaktathi rightly said, drop pods are already insanely good for their cost. Make them pay for the abilities they already have, and then we'll discuss adding more stuff.

Stomp, Thunderblitz, and D-Weapons need to have automatic removal removed. Also, Stomp needs to not effect things that aren't actually in the combat.
I'd like more consistency out of psychic powers, but I'm not that hung up on it.
Other than that, I feel no rules from the basic rules should be changed in any manner.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."
This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

I don't see why we even NEED D-weapons. Why can't it just be S10, AP1, Fleshbane, Armorbane, Instant Death and a special rule (causes d3 wounds and d3 HP vs. vehicles on a penetrating hit). Deadly, but consistent with the rest of the rules.
As for stomps, I think fantasy has the right idea. Get rid of the templates altogether. D6 hits at S6, AP4. Done.

You're not. If you're worried about your opponent using 'fake' rules, you're having fun the wrong way. This hobby isn't about rules. It's about buying Citadel miniatures.
Please report to your nearest GW store for attitude readjustment. Take your wallet. |

People said GW was in a mad rush to get all the 40k books to hardback so they could begin work on campaigns and creating some stability with the game. They were wrong.
40k generates a majority of GW's overall revenue. The new WHFB is essentially an untested product that was struggling before and could (possibly) not be well-received. There is very little chance 40k, the company's lifeblood, will be slowing down at any point- we've got rumors of Tau, Genestealers, Deathwatch...this revenue train isn't slowing down any time soon, choo-choo!!
