Subject: Are we going to be seeing 8th edition 40k soon? Not many codexes left to update...
So far as I am aware the remaining codex updates are:
Astra Militarum/Tempestus
Tyranids
Chaos Space Marines
Chaos Daemons
Tau Empire
Inquisition
Adepta Sororitas (probs just an updated PDF for this one)
Really hope they don't change the rules again so early. For a company that says its all about the models they really do insist on selling us rules for the game.
I know Tau are meant to be next and another demonkin book. But I haven't heard much for any of these codexes or them being tied to any campaigns. I had heard we were getting DA vs Tzeentch Kin followed by Raven Guard v Tau. I don't know, maybe the second part of the year will have a lot more fantasy and campaigns so we won't see any of these new codexes until next year.

Also rumours of more mini-dexes. Deathwatch and Genestealer Cult. And plastic Heresy?
And strictly speaking, Orks, Space Wolves, Grey Knights, Dark Eldar, Blood Angels and possibly even Harlequins and Skitarii/Cult Mechanicus could all use an update to "Edition 7.5." Decurion-style Force-Orgs.

I think we can safely rule this one out.
Not really.
They've had two updates since witch-hunters that came in a white dwarf and another in the ebook. They won't get a proper codex until they get models.
So...never?
Yes, never. Unless GW has a good set of financials and free shelf space they won't risk a new army not selling well.

I wouldn't expect it till at least next summer. I realize I tend to be pessimistic about GW/40k, but even I think GW have the sense to not do it any sooner- it would be suicidal to update the main rule book after only a year. GW seem to be using two years as what they consider a safe rate of codex recycling. If we will see cycles any shorter than that, excluding any opportunities GW can cook up (ie. the "new" imperial knights book).
It seems they'll be busy this summer with trying to resuscitate WHFB, after which it will probably be replacing some of the remaining hardbacks from 6th, and then it'll be time to toss out 8th and start the cycle all over again!

The day they release a new CSM or Daemons Dex that isn't Daemonkin will be when GW sells off their rights to 40k in its entirety.
They've stated they don't want to do anything similar to Loyalist codecies, (Chapter Tactics / Legion Tactics) and they simply wanted CSM to "Be there". They aren't willing to put the effort into it, nor do they want CSM to be a powerhouse Codex due to the fact they are "Bad guys"

If GW is smart, they will just keep cranking out the Codexes, data slates, and formations for a while yet. Let everything get "caught up" first, then BAM! 8th edition. With a total new re-write of the rules forcing you to buy a new codex/models again. And everyone will be playing simplified armies ala 3rd edition out of the back of the main rule book.

IE Chaos Marines.
Chaos isn't allowed to ever have any toys ever again... Not after the 3.5 disaster, and also so that we don't upset the delicate feelings of over-entitled Loyalist players.

Or you know, the truth. Try Google. It's your friend. And if that fails go back a year on BoLS and read some articles, on how GW stated legion tactics and fluffy mechanisms for chaos and daemons wouldn't be possible, then they released the last SM dex.. Nah. We won't see 8th any time soon. 7th was pushed up because of the rejection of the plug-and-play expansion model that they went with in 6th. Once tournaments outlawed the expansions from play, many players followed suit arguing that they weren't really part of the game. In response, GW rushed out 7th, which included everything as part of the core system. Rules reboots aren't about selling more codexes, they're about selling more models. GW has finally found a sales model they like and I have a feeling they're going to stick with it for a good while.

There is nothing on BoLS even 10 years back that is in any shape or form something that actually came out of GW. Nor elsewhere on the internet.
If you mistake BoLS-drivel for actual GW news, I pity you (or envy you, as you play with your fantastic plastic Thunderhawk, which GW releases every year or so according to BoLS).
All the hyper-ventilating regarding a purported 40K 7th edition are missing the underlying story. GW is said to be embarking on a drastic new direction…
First of all, here’s the quick summary of the latest rumors regarding an upcoming edition of 40k headed your way in 2014.
40K 7th Edition in 2014?
But let’s put aside any unreliable he-said-she-said that is tossing about out there. This far out in the schedule any ruleset fine details are irrelevant (and almost certainly wrong) anyhow.
The bigger story is what GW is said to doing at a big picture level and why “7th” may be very, very far in the future…
Here’s what we’ve put together from a variety of sources:
The End of “Big Editions”
Long story short, the era of stark edition splits is over. GW is said to want out of the low ROI process of cranking out those $85 rules bibles and doesn’t like doing it anymore than we like having to shell out for them Another effect this avoids is the sudden shock it causes to the game and player communities (and you bet buying patterns).
The Dawn of “Living-rulesets”
Instead, the goal is to migrate over to a slowly evolving ruleset that grows and adapts over time with new supplements and rule mechanics dropping in, while other sections get phased out via updates to the digital rulebooks and intermittent updates to the paper versions now and then to collate and consolidate the current state of the rules for ease of use for players.
The Days Ahead
What this means is in the months and years ahead look for a more organic updating of Codices, supplements such as Planetstrike, Cities of Death, Apocalypse, and the others to keep them up with the current ruleset at the time of release. Some of these will be simply updating obsolete rules to bring them up to date, while others will be used to “lean forward” with new rules and mechanics to push the game forward.
For 2014, word is to look for this transition to begin, and with it the evolution of the living gamesystem. Look for digital rulebook updates leading the way, rather than 500-page $85 hardcovers no one on either side of the equation wants to either manufacture, or buy.
Quite a reversal for what is effectively the largest and most conservative player in the wargames space.

Aren't CSM the oldest 'dex yet to be updated, so far? Or are they pretty close around 'nids? (We're not gonna count SoB here )
Stop giving me half-arsed theme books GW, gimmie a proper full Chaos 'dex with all the Daemonkin stuff IN it too.

Nice article Wonderwolf, I remember people screaming that there was no way 7th was coming out after two years, that those who believed it was happening were poisoning the game and just "haters."
Fast forward to now, and it seems people are welcoming s possible 8th one to two years after 7th. I guess paying up $85-$100 for a largely recycled rule book isn't so bad when you convince yourself that GW does things for reasons beyond our comprehension and for the "greater good" of 40k. They're like a god, unknowable and mysterious, and damnit, you better not question them, less you wish to be smote!

I would love for the game to take another spin on the "change the mechanics" wheel and see if BA end up somewhere decent. I'm tired of the 2-edition-long shooty edition. I want melee back for units other than the broken good melee ones.

Oh my word. That was the funniest thing I've read all week.
I remember that. I was in the camp of "there's no way! 6th just came out! They'd be stupid to...)
And then it came out a month later and I saw how it was in the opposite direction I had hoped. 7th, moneygrab edition!
Maybe I should go dig up the "Plastic SOB this year!" promises.

Then again were they not suppose to do Fantasy 2 years ago, but surprisingly 40K 7th edition came. So who knows. 40K 8th edition can come out before Fantasy 9th edition. That is if Fantasy is not Squatted that is.

I'm done buying books for 40k. They are over priced and the quality is pants compared to the previous editions. Far to many photos of reasonably well painted models, hardly any art work and an army building section that looks like it was thought of by the tea boy.

Subject: Re:Are we going to be seeing 8th edition 40k soon? Not many codexes left to update...
I don't think so. Remember, the Fantasy 9th edition reboot is happening very soon. The GW release train will start cranking up for that and start putting 40k on the slow track.
The reason GW updated the codexes it did was that these were the codexes that could get away with being release with minimum updates (barring Eldar). Make a couple new kits, write some formations, and there's the new codex. Thing is, GW won't be able to do this for much longer because the remaining factions are in need of serious model updates and releases, especially Chaos.
Even if all the factions are updated, it would not surprise me at all if GW simply introduced new factions to pad the release schedule out. Then there are the summer campaign books to consider, and GW has plenty more on its plate 40k-wise for the foreseeable future.
6th edition got updated so soon because GW's strategy of releasing standalone expansions for the core rulebook wasn't working, which is also why 7th edition plays more like 6.5. I would expect 8th edition rumors to start popping up in the next two or three years. But I'm no rumormonger, so don't hold me to that.
Unless they manage to fill a whole year with Speeesh Mahreeens supplements (unlikely) and/or start churming out more mini-codici (Genestealer Cult and the like), then Chaos (both Marines and Daemons), Tau, Tyranids, Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers are everything that's left.
What will they do once all the codeci are up to date? Begin a new round of releases with a 7.5 Orks codex?
It'll be either a "The End Times" style campaign (likely with the Emprah making a reappearance mounted on his grav-powered Adepta RotaSella and shooting two lascannons out of his eyes) before a new edition, or a new edition straight up.
If I had to put money on something, it would be an end times campaign.
Progress is like a herd of pigs: everybody is interested in the produced benefits, but nobody wants to deal with all the resulting gak.
GW customers deserve every bit of outrageous princing they get.
