In a plane crash no less.

Titanic composer James Horner dead in plane crash at 61

Titanic and Braveheart composer James Horner has died in a plane crash near Santa Barbara at age 61.

A single-engine plane owned by the Academy Award-winning composer crashed on Monday in Ventura County, in California. Initially the name of the occupant, who was pronounced dead, was not released but Horner's assistant Sylvia Patrycja has since confirmed that Horner was the pilot.

"We have lost an amazing person with a huge heart and unbelievable talent," Patrycja wrote on Horner's Facebook page on Monday. "He died doing what he loved. Thank you for all your support and love and see you down the road."

The crash was reported shortly before 9:30am (2.30am Tuesday) on Quatal Canyon Road, a remote stretch in Los Padres National Forest, said Ventura County sheriff's Capt. John Reilly.

The crash of the single-engine S312 Tucano sparked a small brush fire that grew to about 2 acres, Reilly said. County fire crews doused the flames.

Jay Cooper, the longtime attorney for Horner, had confirmed that the plane involved in the crash was one of five aircraft owned by the composer.

Horner's manager did not initially respond to a request for comment. A person answering the phone at the Calabasas home owned by Horner and his wife requested privacy.

Horner was widely considered one of the most successful film composers of all time. He won two Academy Awards for composing the music in Titanic, whose soundtrack includes the mega-hit My Heart Will Go On.

Over a career spanning nearly four decades, Horner garnered several Academy Award nominations for his work on such critically acclaimed films as Braveheart, A Beautiful Mind, Avatar, Aliens and Apollo 13.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash, FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said.

Tributes are pouring in across social media from Hollywood stars, directors and producers, as well as, oddly, Clive Palmer.

Celine Dion, who sang the hit My Heart Will Go On, co-written by Horner, released a statement saying: "Rene [Angelil, Dion's husband] and I are deeply saddened by the tragic death of James Horner. He will always remain a great composer in our hearts. James played an important part in my career. We will miss him. We offer his family and friends our deepest sympathy."

Ah man... :(

Braveheart was one of the first sountracks I ever owned. Now I have dozens and dozens of them. As a lover of film scores this is a sad day.

Probably the most appropriate of his pieces for such sad news;

Every article I have seen acts like Titanic was his magnum opus or that he was mainly known for that, which is completely wrong. I've known Horner for years and I wouldn't think of that first at all. He was an incredibly prolific composer, which means he had misses as much as hits, but he was one of the big names in the field.
Spoiler:

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

James Horner's music could often make a meh movie into a great movie. Take a scene that should come across as cheesy and silly, add a Horner score, and suddenly it's a classic.

Wrath of Khan was his big hitter for me. That soundtrack makes sure you NEVER fall asleep during that film lol.
