The squating of serveral long-time factions!
Deep complex rules that fit in 4 pages!
Butchered names that only an IP lawyer could love!
Land Marines!
Round bases!
Moar Khorne models!
The destruction of 30 years of great stories and settings!
Mantic!
Value of my now OOP models with skyrocket on ebay!
Battle cat!
Can finally throw away those old models and rules taking up space!
Hammers!
Love me some reboots!
The slim dying hope that maybe, just maybe the current management can make a good game!

Are we actually assuming this is a replacement for fantasy?
I don't think it is. I think it's an inexpensive way to get people interested in the more advanced game that the models can also be used for.

You know. That thing we've been asking for since the dawn of time?

Well, they've been taking all of the 8th books down from stores, and reps have reported that "this is it." I realize of course that reps are nearly useless with this sort of thing, but if they weren't going to end WHFB then I don't know why the books would have all been removed. I suppose 9th *could* be coming after that, but splitting WH into two different games, when the game is already on life support, seems like a really poor decision.

Seeing the leaked War Scrolls I'm actually feeling pretty good about it. The roll to hit/wound right on the profile is pretty nifty, and rules will be out to support other older models from GW.

On the other hand, I'm hoping this is not the 9th Edition people have been waiting for. I really doubt it, but I suppose it is possible.

My hobby went from games workshop games to following what games workshop is up to at any given moment. Its more entertaining and a lot cheaper than their games were. I'd happily jump back in if i saw any credible signs of improvement, instead i see stuff like this. Still entertaining though, can't wait to see the financials for the next period (this period has already become redundant and its not even out yet).

Agreed times a million. At least skaven would finally get an army book meant for the edition they're in. Hopefully it can also be a decently powered book that needs no ultra FAQ and doesn't have a bunch of weird complainers that it's OP despite being severely outdated.

Just because the book's out of date, doesn't mean it's weak... as the Skaven book proves.

And just because it can be competitive doesn't means it's still a great book.. the internal balance for that book is quite bad now. Just compare Skavenslaves or most of the rare choices to any of our special characters.

I think I picked the best new option with "Butchered names that only an IP lawyer could love!"

The races have all been renamed. Orcs are now ORRUKS, Lizardmen are SERAPHON.

(I need something stronger than just a facepalm for this)

What I can derive so far...

Dwarves- Duardin
Dark Elves- Red Slayers? (not anywhere near positive on this one)
Lizardmen- Seraphon
Beastmen- Brayherd
Skaven- Still Skaven!
Vampire Counts- Deathmages?
Orcs- Orruks
Grots- Still Grots!
Ogres- Ogors

I'm assuming Elves will be renamed, just don't see them mentioned. Humans, well, maybe they'll be called "Kirbians"?

Are we not supposed to like the new names? I think they sound pretty cool and give a bit of dimension to the races, instead of being generic "orcs/goblins/elves" we always see.

Personally I think the new names are a dismal load of gak that when I was at prep school would have been given a low mark in a 4th form creative writing essay.

GW have an entire design studio working full time on product development and the best name they could think up for orcs is "orruks"?

No wonder they are advertising for creative writers at the moment.

At this point, the concept of "angelic paladins in golden armor with mega-pauldrons" vs. "shirtless evil dudes on steroids" hasn't got generic at all, of course.

I'll admit that the names are a bit better than GW's naming convention of last years (stick two random names together and let it roll. Thunderwolf! Murderfang! Wrathmonger!), but still "Blood Warriors", "Liberators" and "Prosecutors" sound a bit generic to me, while "Lord Celestant" seems taken from some japanese rpg.

Progress is like a herd of pigs: everybody is interested in the produced benefits, but nobody wants to deal with all the resulting gak.

GW customers deserve every bit of outrageous princing they get.

The end of ridiculous Lulz posts regarding it. Whether the game blows, or it's amazing, at least we'll see a dramatic reduction in those.

All kidding aside... hoping there is a more fleshed out rules set coming and the leaked stuff is just watered down starter (yes yes, i know some GW rep somewhere said to someone on a forum somewhere else that this was it. I'm applying NACL.), because WOW are there some big ass loopholes in the 4 page rules.

Yeah i haven't seen the faction pdf's but as far as rules go this is just bad. It's way too different. It's like 40k and some non-GW game had some weird abomination of a love-child whose face only a mother could love (i.e. GW employees mostly because they're paid to).

It's just way too different. It doesn't feel like fantasy even a little. It's basically what mordheim is to fantasy or what epic 40k is to 40k. The change from 7th to 8th was there sure and some complained but this is far too much.

I voted Mantic.

I played AoS at midnight and it's not a bad ruleset. If anyone else came out with it, they'd be praised.

The only downside is the lack of points.

And the reason I voted Mantic?

Cheap Undead.

That's because this isn't Fantasy. Fantasy as we know it is over, AoS is a completely new game.
This game makes no attempt to be Fantasy either, the Warscrolls for the existing model range are really little more than a means for people to instantly play the game with models they own so that GW has an instant player pool that they don't need to build from the ground up again.

This really isn't true. If any other company put this ruleset out, they'd be mocked mercilessly and their reputation would be in the toilet for releasing a clearly incomplete ruleset. The core rules seem to be full of holes, there's zero structure for building forces, and no way to balance two armies (although the last bit is intentional, because they literally want you to buy more models so you can win by simply outnumbering your opponent).

I think the core idea here was a good one. The scale and complexity of WHFB were killing it. A move to a more streamlined system like LotR was necessary to save the game, and I think at the core AoS has the seeds of something like that. This is just a horribly hamfisted attempt, and that combined with completely blowing up the setting will likely kill Fantasy and render AoS stillborn all at once.

What is GW thinking ive never seen something so terrible. Honestly its like im looking at Blizzards attempt to make a world of warcraft style tabletop game or GW's attempt to make a warmachine rip off. Nothing of what I loved at least aesthetically remains now.

Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,
and the ends of the earth your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron and dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel. Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son,
lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,
for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

Reminisce about the past, grab some out of date ideas, roll them together and bam you have a new ip that'll rock the new kickstarter dream world, actually I'm sure that happened or did I just dream it....

How hard could it be?! Surely the combined genius that is some internet folks on a message board always know better than the largest tabletop gaming company...

I cannot believe how badly people are getting bent out of shape about a joke post about GW. Seriously, it's actually kind of scary.

Mean old dakka people

Well, in other news it seems that WH-AOS is going to be those four pages. And there isn't any real balancing of the armies- at least according to mikhaila, there's not even a points system! Just gentlemen's agreements on what constitutes an army. But I'm sure the largest tabletop company could never make a significant mistake...

Um, isn't this as dakka puts it the largest online wargaming community in the world? And the primary bulk of discussion is about Warhammer and GW. If this is how the mods behave, I feel disinclined to return with the intent of partaking in constructive discussion.

With that and the reactions to the army composition system in mind, I guess it is too much for GW to expect us to apply manners.
