A robot that hitch-hiked around Europe and Canada has been smashed to pieces in the United States.
HitchBOT, who was created as part of a social experiment to see whether robots can trust humans, had spent weeks successfully hitchhiking his way from town to town.
The robot was trying to cross the United States and had got as far as Philadelphia.

If you click through there a short vid. about this.

What an odd world we live.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Cool project, sad to see it get smashed; hopefully they get some good data from the project (and why it got smashed).

Maybe even prosecute the people who smashed it for destruction of property too

Oh, how horribly sad. I suppose it's accurate in that you simply can't trust everybody out there.

You see America, this is why we can't have nice things. The thing made it across Europe and Canada and lasts two weeks in the US before being smashed in Philadelphia.....the city of brotherly love.

It's a bit like small projects that children in elementary school do over here, flat stanley. They make a paper cut-out person and send it to someone as far away as possible and ask them to photo-document his travels. My youngest niece sent hers to me while I lived in Japan; her flat stanley visited the grand sumo tournament, Tokyo tower and experienced a green tea ceremony.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

And thats why the US will be the last holdout against the Robot Menace. We're just such s they won't have a chance until they develop their 12th generation killing machine.

Exactly, that and we have more guns and bullets. Now if they can just miniaturize that giant laser those Japanese scientists cooked up recently I'll be set.

It’s not anti-robot bias. Human hitch-hikers would be treated the same way. No need to start the robot uprising over this.

Hitchbot made it through New York without a problem.

Of course it had to get destroyed in Philly.

Oh bloody hell, now I've got childhood memories of listening to Flat Stanley cassette tapes.

That was a name I never thought I'd hear again.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Another interesting point brought up in the article on slate about this is that children are well known to abuse robots. That may be potentially what happened.

Quote for the article

Humans may find robots creepy at times, but at the International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction in March, Japanese researchers presented a paper titled "Why Do Children Abuse Robots?" about scenarios where the tables are turned. The field study noted incidents of children hitting, kicking, punching, detaining, and physically manipulating a human-sized humanoid social robot at a mall in Japan. The robot encountered many children, and the researchers did follow up interviews with 28 of them.

They wrote, "We found that the majority of [the children] did not regard the robot as just a machine, but a human-like entity ... yet [they] engaged in the abuse, mentioning the reason as curiosity or enjoyment." The researchers hypothesized that the children may not have felt empathy for the robots, even when they thought the robots were "upset" by being abused.

Eagles fans (and Philly sports fans in general) have pretty much always been considered the worst fanbase ever. Not surprised that a Canadian robot got jumped in Philly. Whoever took him there should have put some green on him before leaving.

Pretty sure you can find examples of that for all sports fans. Pro sports fans aren't the smartest people in general...how else would we describe a group of people whose emotional well-being depends upon the performance of adults paid millions of dollars to do what they did for fun when they were 12?

On the same magnitude and frequency? Possible, but at the end of the day, a Philly Fan is still a Philly fan. And he has to look in the mirror every day.
