In the novel Tarkin, a really silly explanation was produced that the Jedi Temple on Coruscant was built atop an ancient Sith Shrine (which got there somehow) and the Shrine slowly corrupted and blinded the order over thousands of years preventing them from seeing the future clearly or sensing Palpatine's malevolence.

Somewhere in south-central England.

Most of Star Wars has been set in extreme climates like Tatooine (desert) or Hoth (arctic). It's refreshing to see the action take place a normal kind of climate like Britain.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

indeed. As well know the Empire recruited its entire naval contingent from Oxford boarding school.

Is it bad that I suddenly have this image of Elizabeth Hurley in an Imperial Governor's uniform commanding the bridge of Death Star III ?

Well, as we know, Jedi are basically the "paladins" of the SW universe.... so clearly, either the DM was meta-gaming, or the PCs were rolling spectacularly bad on all of their Detect Evil spells

Could you force push flames out of the way?

You can, however it has been demonstrated that physical objects are a little tougher to deflect than energy bolts. Jedi have had issues deflecting solid projectiles in the past, granted its all defunct currently with the EU being scrapped.

In the original Clone Wars animated movie Obi-wan does deflect a Bounty Hunter's Flamethrower. But it wasn't an easy thing.

I always got the impression it was because he was so powerful that he could shield himself as the source of the dark side. Palpatine could only shield himself enough so that the council could feel the presence of something dark, but not from who.

I know wookiepedia calls it Force Stealth, which seems was added in the EU.

Different Jedi have different powers. I just figured Palpatine was excellent at "Jedi Stealth" and was careful to only use passive powers whenever possible.

I thought it was because the writing and direction was so bad, jedi powers were useless before it.

Looking at the movies it seemed jedi were all the same, all had the same training and so on. The only difference was skill or advancement.

I only watch the movies but it makes sense that they are all the same. Kind of like one giant dojo where everyone is educated the same way and trained the same way and ultimately they all end up being pretty similar.

It appears that sith are the only ones who are entirely made up of deviant special snow flakes all with different light sabers and so on.

So Palpatine had plot stealth? Kinda like plot armor but it makes you undetectable by people who should totally detect you.

A little bit of that. The EU also touched on the idea that over time, the Force become more and more 'clouded' by the Dark Side, and towards the end of the Clone Wars they were having trouble seeing much of anything clearly.

So he could cloak his presence when he was around the Jedi, and they didn't get any other warnings of it through the Force beyond a general 'something is wrong' vibe that they couldn't pin down to anything clearly... and there was a lot of crap happening at the time.

That was the EU though. I doubt that Lucas bothered to think up an explanation for it.

Well, Yoda hung out near a strong Dark Side source to mask his presence, IIRC. That implies there's a cancellation kind of effect at work, rather than making one or the other stand out.

So with Palpatine being so positioned so close to what had to be the largest concentration of Light Side users in the galaxy, perhaps his Dark Side power was concealed. It may be an ironic thing where the safest place for a Sith was right under the nose of the Jedi.

And when I watched the prequels I just figured that power masking was exactly the kind of ability the Sith would develop and use.
