Yeah but it was pretty minor, he's like "Ow, gak" he should have lost an eye or part of his face or something, as all good Sith should be somewhat mutilated IMO.

My wife and I figured that before she owned a bar she was a janitor on Bespin hired to clean out the garbage chutes. When Lando buggered off and left the city to go bust due to lack of Imperial funding she found herself out of work but used her savings to open that cantina, taking that sweet lightsaber she found with her.

Yeah Craig was filming in the studio next door and apparently just wandered over and asked if he could be in it and JJ told him he had just the part. I almost think the "and Im dropping the blaster" was an improvised line.

Simon Peg was in it too if you can figure out who it was since he too was unrecognizable.

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM!

Also, also, Kylo is actually affected by the death of his father way more than he expected,

Per word of JJ Abrams and Kylo Rens entire character arc in the movie, he was at his weakest during the fight at the end. He was conflicted through the whole movie, and he expected that confronting Han would finally kill off the good in him and make him stronger with the dark side. Instead, it only strengthened his internal conflict. Power in the Force is about strength of conviction, which is why the dark side is easy to gain strength but the light can be more powerful. Ren lacked conviction, Rey did not. The Force took care of the rest.

Where are we getting this idea that Rey is perfect at everything? She learns to fly the Falcon through the "crash enough times that you finally figure it out" approach. Her clever idea to save Han by closing the doors is a spectacular failure that almost gets everyone killed. She has to learn the hard way that you should probably take the safety off before trying to shoot someone. She breaks down and runs away because she had a scary dream, and gets captured without a fight. She initially loses the duel with Kylo Ren, gets backed against a cliff with the killing blow about to land, and only survives because he tries to turn her to the dark side instead of just finishing her off.

Don't forget when she failed to keep her oldest remaining friend (Finn) from abandoning her.

I kind of wish he had a line along the lines of 'This may be a trap!' when consulting the Starkiller plans...

On a related note, the Sullustan pilot at the briefing was actually Nien Nubn, of 2nd Death Star Attack fame.

I won't lie that the rebel pilot in the new movie is kinda mary sue but he had the training. There's a difference.

If Im being honest, the first character I pointed to as a mary sue while watching the film was Poe. I actually muttered it aloud during the scene where he wrecks all those TIE fihters singlehandedly. OTOH, with Rey I simply said "what an unbelievable and overdeveloped character, they really should have saved some of this for the second movie." But alas, the internet being the internet this ended up being an argument based on the term "Mary Sue" and all the polarization associated with it rather than whether or not shes a well written character.

In any case, I wrote a response to a post on reddit that covers many of the points re: why Luke/Anakin arent quite Mary Sues: https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWars/comments/3xzt81/if_rey_is_a_mary_sue_then_so_is_luke_and_anakin/cy99ykb

That's hardly guidance.

So were allowed to assume that Rey had some sort of training, but not allowed to assume that the mystical space wizard uses his blue glowie powers to help Luke guide the torpedoes into the exhaust port?

"DEUS EX MACHINA"

Dont even get me started.

Do not even pull the sexist card on me. I liked Ripley, the black woman in 'Firefly' and in ways sarah conner in terminator 2 (even if I found it kind of funny that her personality changed but she had time to train and change from movie to movie).

Rei is too perfect and luke was not.

Yeah the sexist card is being thrown around a bit much. If you want a good example of how to write a proper self-empowered female lead then look at Katniss from Hunger Games or Triss from Divergent. Both of them make mistakes, struggle, and fail and then eventually become total badasses.

Yea that scene where Poe blasted like 5 Tie fighters above the bar made me shake my head too. Im pretty sure no X-Wings died in that scene too which was lame.

So does Rey. She makes mistakes, struggles, and only wins after learning the hard way.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

But that makes complete sense... he's supposed to be the best pilot in the Galaxy. Doing incredible things is not what makes a character a Mary Sue. In the 1970s, the chess player Bobby Fischer single-handedly smashed the cabal of Russian Grandmasters who had been dominating chess. Men who were considered unbeatable, and he took them apart like they were beginners. It was very impressive, but then it is also understandable because he was the best chess player in the world. That's why we know his name (true story). It's the same for Poe Dameron, he's worked his way through the ranks to be #1. That's why he is a rebel commander, and why he is in the story. His abilities are explained intrinsically. That's actually good writing.

Completely different to a classic Mary Sue like Wesley Crusher, who continually outshines other characters that have worked their way up the ranks, for no demonstrable reason other than creator bias.

Thinking Longerer and Harderer on the Rey subject...

I think the biggest problem compared to Luke is that not only does she get her powers/succeed in things much faster she also does it without much challenge.

It doesn't matter that she can fly, or shoot things because all characters in Starwars can do this. Watching a New Hope Luke AND his buddies feel like they are in danger. They work as a team to do everything in the movie.

In TFA this is the case too, in a way. It takes a "fleet" of X-Wings + the bombs to defeat the bigger death star, to beat Kylo it takes a laser glance and 2 fighters etc. But the movie seemed to gloss over these.

I feel that the main problem here is the delivery. I know, for me, that it seemed like the movie jumped from action scene to action scene and most characters got glossed over and all I walked away thinking was how outrageous the characters feats where. If it had been toned down and presented in a better way then maybe it would have been improved.

I suspect, for those in my position, that it would have been a cool movie if the presentation was changed. Lets take Poe wiping out 5 Tie Fighters. Now when he does it in seconds it looks and seems silly. But if over the course of the movie he repeatedly overcame his adversaries in a toned manner then it would be fine. I'm pretty sure Luke kills about 2 Tie fighters in one movie (well technically hundreds...) along a successful strafe on the Death Star. But it takes a while not seconds.

Lets take Rey, she learns to use the force in seconds (maybe a minute at most?). It wasn't gradual nor was it built up. She just closed her eyes and won. Instead imagine if we saw her in the opening scene trying really hard to use these odd powers she has and knows nothing about. Then one scene she uses her mind trick successfully for the first time to get extra rations. This is a big achievement, she then tries bigger targets and fails. In the final scene she manages to use it on the Storm Trooper and escapes. This takes the course of the movie, shows progression and real failure.

Delivery is really important and when a characters abilities come one after another out of seemingly nowhere or need to be explained by fan fiction etc it comes across really badly, well in my opinion.

After a long thought this is my main issue. It's not what she can do it's the way it was presented? Unfortunately it's ruined the next movie for me so I might watch it on DVD maybe. But really if this is how characters are gonna be done in this trilogy it's no longer for me. But I have a feeling if the characters had been shown what they where good at instead of them being given seconds of time at the time to show what they are good at it would go a long way to curbing out the current complaints.

Sure, im a sexist, that has got to be the issue. I got to stop beating my GF and seeing her as weak and maybe I can look at female characters and see them as equal and maybe one day I can be like you and excuse crappy writing because it's a girl and not hate it because it's a girl.

Sadly today is not this day and until Rey is replaced by Reynold in the Disney special editions I will not be happy.

Lets get rid of the black guy too. He shouldn't even be a storm trooper!

The orange alien owns a bar? In what world can a female own a bar, she should be the wench serving drinks not running the place. No wonder it ended up destroyed.

I think Phasma is the embodiment of female characters, she was a coward, a feminazi and was responsible for the death of thousands and ultimately ended up in the garbage. Other than Phasma this is a movie for women and this is why I hate it. No for any other reason at all.

Good, all should be sorry. What I feel is important and when writing an opinion on a movie I should not contain my opinion on it. Instead I should cry silently to myself in the shower.

No, he really doesn't and it's something that has been pointed out numerous times already.

Also, I'm not the one going on rants about how angry they are at Star Wars, like some people on this thread.
