Okay, so basically what you are saying is that I was right? Because I said it wasn't the original name, you said it was, I said it wasn't, and then you said it wasn't? It's not like I said McKinley was the original name.
Denali is the most prominent of the historic names for the mountain and the one used by the people who settled the area around the mountain, which is the reason why we use that as the original name.

Sorry if you have a difficult time understanding that.

Sigh. I am not having difficulty understanding anything.

Did I say it wasn't the most 'historically prominent' name?

Did I say it was a bad name?

I made the simple statement that it (Denali) probably wasn't the original name. And it probably wasn't. Get over yourself. It was a mild joke, maybe with the intent to make people think a bit about the fact that basically no one anywhere were the original people there. But you had to swoop in to correct me... because you apparently read stuff into what I said that wasn't there.

I doubt Denali is the original name of the mountain. Sure it's been called that for a while... but original? Probably not.
It's what the Koyukon people who have lived in the region for thousands of years have called it. It pretty much means "tall."

So yeah, it's the original name.

Ah, so is it the term original you are having trouble with? Or do you honestly believe that whatever proto-native american group first stumbled on the mountain, pointed at it and said "Denali", settled down for the twenty to forty or so thousand years between then and now - depending on what theories you buy into about how the Americas were populated - and remained culturally and linguistically stable, or at least enough so that the word for that specific mountain remained the exact same?

Cause I am betting no.

I dunno... let's ask "god" what the mountain's name really is...

And not to get semantic... but anglicizing a name isn't changing it... it's changing the spelling to fit our limited alphabet. It'd be like some dude named Kominski... In Cyrillic lettering it probably looks all crazy and nothing like that. "Kominski" is merely the anglicized spelling.

Glad you guys had such fun with the thread. It really is funny.

What is really interesting about this though - apart from the fact our wikipedia fact sheet is going to change in the highest peak department - is that Trump can and already has used this for Political gain. Ohio has literally been the most important state to win in the electoral college for any presidential candidate as it has has quite a lot of votes for a swing state.

McKinley was an Ohio native who has now been scoffed by Obama. Not exactly a smart move if you ask me - to overstep the congress to enrage the populace of the most important state for determining presidential elections. Trump read this news an instantly made a statement that he will restore the McKinley name if he wins the election. LOL. Got love the Trump. All Obama had to do to avoid this was make some effort to honor McKinley - which I have no idea why he didn't.

It's because he hates America, and this is just one step on the path to instilling a new age of liberal darkness.

Ohio won't matter for that, because there won't be any elections in the gay re-education FEMA camps.

Also, I'm going to call shenanigans on the idea that the population of Ohio is enraged by this. My guess is that they're an even split between "didn't hear about this", "didn't know who McKinley was", "didn't know McKinley was from Ohio" and "don't care".

I lived in Ohio for 17 years, and I don't think I ever heard anybody express any concern at all about McKinley's legacy.

It's also, what, 16 months prior to the General election? Probably not going to be a big factor.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all

For a stupid reason. Surely there must be a better place to name after McKinley that would honour him better? More than "I like the cut o' yer goldin gib there, Bill!" by some toothless miner.

2,300 living people is still more than one dead mediocre president.

And the population of a whole state, acting through their legislature, with broad congressional support at the federal level against how many people that are actually bothered by this?

Honestly, other than "Obama" why do you care? What is your connection to the mountain of the name? Other than "it's always been that way", which is of course a lie, why does your opinion matter more than the actual people in the actual state?

Yes, and? You're telling me that a president legally changing the name of a mountain, as asked to by the people of the state in which it is situated, will blackball the Democratic party? That sounds ridiculous. You're implying that the people of Ohio give a gak about Obama, mountains or McKinley. Not sure they do. Show me the proof.

True enough, but Fox seems the only one to villify Obama over just about anything.

"President Obama saved the life of a young child today, diving to push him out of the path of a moving van."

And Fox be like:
"fething Barry just couldn't resist the urge to get close to a child. SMH."

How is that ridiculous? Ohio has been fighting for years to keep the name...Obama oversteps congress to declare the name change himself... is really that hard to see the political damage that this could cause? Obama didn't win Ohio by much - little things like this can throw an election.

Did "Ohio" fight for years to keep the name? Did their senators and representatives get elected on a platform of "this name will not change"? Do the people of Ohio hold rallies to keep the name?

Did a single city in Ohio fight to keep the name?

Or did a single person who happens to be from Ohio who had a personal interest because of where he is from fight to keep the name?

I feel that you are placing just a little too much weight on how "Ohio" as a whole feels about this.
