Any game of 40k is fun especially with great opponents; cheezey list or not. Also just having a goo time fielding what we want for a laugh.

7th edition 40k is a lot like BDSM these days. Only play with people you know and develop a safe word for when things get too intense. And It doesn't hurt to be a sadist or masochist as well.

Fight with all you've got until the very last turn.
Not knowing who's gonna win until the last turn.
Going back and forth with climatic and epic combats/phases.
Be able to smile and laugh about stuff with your opponent after the game even if you've lost.

A good cold beer.

Crucial.

Though I've found games turn south quick when a few beers turns into a few too many. Many a drunken argument I've had with my brother over plastic toy soldiers

Lots of stuff is killed / blows up on both sides, the outcome is in doubt for most of the game, no rule arguments that can't be solved with - "yeah that sounds about right". Having a laugh before during and after the game.

I... actually don't know. Help?

I agree to the post above, when everything dies. EVERYTHING. When huge flyers crash on their own guys, a blast scatters back to the tank that fired it, etc.

When a game isn't one-sided.
When my opponent is a good sport.
When rules disputes are resolved quickly. Better to move on and look it up later.
When I get to finish a game. I have had too many games end early because we ran out of time, or RL intervenes.

Both of you turning up with an army you want to play

Not the army you want to win with

And generally being a good sport
In a tournament once a game finished I realised I'd fluffed one of my rules which lead to the unit not being removed from the game and turning out to be quite important and winning the game for me.

So I voluntarily gave up my entry to let him progress as I realised I'd fluffed
