I love your warband and it's background, really good way to highlight the fanaticism of the Black Templar. Keep it up!

As far as I can tell (I've got no actual marines with me atm) they're the same scale as ordinary marines.
The weird scaling thing might've been an attempt to appeal to Japanese modelers - I know Gundam come in some kinda odd scales, like 1/144th etc.
IDK tho, but they seem fine, and they sure are pretty.

this is a great project and i'm glad to see it back on its feet. it reminds me of my good friend's BT army from back in 4th edition.

Been a hot minute. I'm back on my Templars.
Back in May, a bunch of less-than-cool stuff happened, so I decided to treat myself. Took a bunch of pics because I still need to get used to the new camera.
These guys won't get painted until I'm back in blighty, and the dread - Chaplain Tithonus - won't be assembled whilst he's out here, for transport's sake.
A lot are semi-assembled, because I'm a big fan of sub-assemblies, and also because I haven't totally decided on how to kit them out. For the first time, someone in 40k doesn't have enough purity seals, so I'm trying to be canny. My little fanatics all gotta have at least a few prayers glued to 'em.

Also, I've still got about 11 dudes who are still just legs (4 Mk. iv, 4 Mk.iii, 3 Mk. whatever plain spaghetti marines are). I wanna build one guy with another combi-flamer for my sternguard, I've got a Fw lascannon lying around, 2 multi-meltas and 2 more heavy bolters, though I'm not sure which should go on which legs. (I've also got some very pretty power swords and power battle axes from the FW weapons kits, which I might use, though Emperor knows I probably have enough sword brethren by this point) - If anyone has any suggestions for what would look cool, lemme know!
Anyway, thanks for looking! Any comments are always appreciated!

Rifling through SD cards and found this feller. Thought I'd add him to the log, as I quite like him.
I love space marine banners, and might get some more, though I'm a little daunted by freehand. I want to try to do the official Black Templars Helbrecht banner with this guy.

Been a while!
So I've been back in the UK for a while now, keeping myself busy and plotting the next adventure.
My stuff from Korea arrived in mid November, and boy oh boy is my backlog big now. No buying minis for a while methinks...
Spoiler:
I give that resolution all of five minutes

Anyway, here's the first batch of minis from the Great Winter Muster, as the Korean Division merges with the Reading Contingent.
Way back in 2016, my good buddy trephines and I played a few games, my ragtag crusaders vs his wall-of-steel mech guard.

I very quickly realized I needed a harder anti-armor bulwark, and set about getting as many lascannons as I could squeeze out of the devastators box as I could.
I'm pretty pleased with these guys. The Sarge is from my next project. Unfortunately, the resin for almost all of them came warped around the heads just enough to make them all a bit derpy, but not enough that anything can be done to sort them out. Planning on making all of my Sgts in future adhere to the standard Sword Bretheren Scheme, as we Templars don't really have many other markings besides.
Spoiler:
The codex astartes is lame and Guilliman is a wiener!!!

Did my usual customizing once more. I kinda feel like lascannons and devastator squads aren't very templar-y, so I tried to make them look a bit grizzled, as though they were Dornian seigebreakers, who were used to getting charged and having to get stuck in in more dire straits.

As ever, thanks for checking this out, and lemme hear yer feedback! Feel like I could've done the transfers a bit nicer, and I'm still trying to get the technique for glowy swords down, but otherwise pretty please with meself!

More updates!

So I'm not sure how long I'll even be back in the UK, and with certain deadlines looming, I've been feeling the pressure to try to hack through my now-very-sizable backlog. Been a bit busy of late, but I've managed to get a bit of painting in here and there.
Finally I've finished the resin Sword Brethren. This was probably the first resin kit to actually give me significant trouble, and when I first put them together some 2 years ago, I think I learned a fair bit. They've been knocked off the No. 1 spot for "most hellish finecast I've ever dealt with" by some Eldar Rangers, but without the stuff I learned about filling and filing off of these guys, I wouldn't have come close to being able to fix my rangers (also watching lots of leakycheese helped)

Had a crack at a bit more freehand, as that's something I wanna git gud at, so those crosses poking out from behind cloaks, and the lil "Templars" bit is prep for some stuff I wanna do on my tanks, a la everyone's favorite goth-inspired razorback, The Danzig.

As mentioned before, I want to do all my "sargents" up in the sword brother scheme, so these fellas aren't really a unit as much as just 5 dudes I've just finished (mostly because we don't have rules anymore... )

I've decided I wanna try to aim for a finished unit every week. I'm thinking of aiming for a few larger models next, maybe a tank? Or a Dred? Grav Centurions anyone? No?

As ever, thanks for stopping by, all your feedback is appreciated, and if ya have any suggestions for what I should try to paint next, I'd be glad to hear it!
Happy New Year!

Yo! Me again!
Not as fast as I said I would be. Circumstances. Interviews. Hangovers. Y'know, a pretty usual Tuesday afternoon in the like of a true McBogus.

This Land Raider has taken me a while. Looking back at my older posts, I've had it since at least October 2015, which makes it one of the slower additions (though far from the slowest - watch this space!)
A few challenges, and quite a lot of lessons learned from this old beast, but I'm glad to have it done at long last!
(anyone have any tips for doing space marine vehicle highlights quickly? I think I nearly lost my mind painting in the last few stages!)

I decided to call this tank "The Gilead", which was a lot cooler and more obscure back in 2015, before they made that TV series with the crappy ending and then Margaret Atwood decided to repeat the mistakes of the Madadam trilogy and do another sequel.

Painting the inside was fun, and I don't regret it - even if ya can't see a damn thing of it now. As for the outside, I decided to keep things a little more subdued - I quite like the all black templar tanks from the various codex artwork, but I was also thinking (at the time, not sure I want to do many more tanks...) of making a land raider spearhead someday, with the forgeworld HQ landraider as like the lead tank, so it would make sense for the other two to be less ostentatious.
Plenty of backlog still to get through, thinking of doing some more infantry (oh boy do I have enough infantry to get through ), though I've still got a lot of bigger stuff to get done, too. If the light's okay, I might put up a new army shot, as I haven't tried one of them in a while.

Anywho, thanks for dropping by, feedback is always appreciated!

Yo! Another update on the warband!

I got knocked off my bike a couple of weeks back, and couldn't really do much other than mope and shitpost for like 2 weeks. Whilst I was supposed to be painting drop pods (god I hate highlighting anything larger than a terminator), I grabbed these boyos from my uni days off the shelf (moldlines and all) and started finishing them up while I waited for paint to dry.

I've got 6 more scouts on the workbench, though they need a little more love, so as ever, if you're out there, don't hold ya breath.

Though I kinda resent the sameface heads, I'm pretty pleased with these lil dudes! A few of their faces are less-than-great, but I think I did okay! And what Templars army is complete without its beloved meatshields? Cough, cough, I mean, Neophytes?

I've also officially run out of the GW Templars transfers, and am now completely dependent on my stash of lovely forgeworld ones for the rank-and-file of this army.

I haven't done it in a while, so I thought I'd take some group shots of all the completed stuff again. And privately shudder at all the unpainted toys I have sitting on a shelf for this army alone.
I also embarked on the possibly ill-advised endeavor of updating all my marine bases to 32mm - a WHOLE LOT of them are still not fully painted, and could do with a little more sand or flock here and there. Kept my Neophytes on 25mm tho, 'cause I think it fits them. Looking at this, I've got one 16-man crusader squad (lasplas baybeeeeeee ) one 4x lascannon devastator squad, an assault terminator squad, land raider crusader, razorback, Emperor's Champion, and a termi chaplain. The rest are kinda just drips and drabs of other (upcoming, righteous sons of Rogal Dorn) squads that I'll finish...
...sometime?

I'm not totally sure what I'll have a crack at next. But thanks as ever for looking!

Cheers man! Think I'll have to try and get some games in sometime - been itching to give 8th a try, and a good friend of mine is currently working on some dudes, so hopefully we'll finally be able to revisit those heady summer days of 2016, when his guardsmen would roundly kick my power armored keister.
( @trephines )
But in the mean time, I might try to cut my teeth at my local GW - I think they're getting suspicious that all I've ever bought is paint, glue and like, the odd inquisitor.

posermcbogus,

Same here, as my gaming group is large we play at someone's house and not at the store. All that I purchase from my local GW store is a bottle of paint now and again, sometimes bringing in old Rogue Trader and 2nd Edition models to show them.

Nice little force you have built and painted.

Cheers,

Thanks very much, mate! Haha, I've honestly never been that much of a gamer, I mostly enjoy making my little dudes, and seeing their characters come through as the paint goes on. I've got LOADS more built/semi-built at the minute, but I'm a bit overwhelmed - out in Korea I started about 4 other armies, and whilst I actually managed to paint every model of two of them, I still have a LONG way to go before I can start feeling comfortable about expanding any oh them! But of the finished guys, especially my templars, I'm pretty happy. I like how in that group shot, I've managed to mix some of my older, sloppier models, with some of my more recent painting, like the Japan Marines!

Good afternoon folks!

Many things to chew over of late. Moving country again. Kill team. 40-something marines to spray paint. 20 something marines to finish. 3 dreadnoughts, 2 drop pods, a vindicator and a predator.
(among like 4 other wip armies )

But what better way to chew things over, than with a nice sit-down-and-paint.

It is my pleasure to thus present to you: Marshall Herzfeld (1,000,000 McBogus points to the lucky Dakkanaught that can name that reference!)

I started work on this guy back in my 3rd year of uni, and for the longest time couldn't decide on pauldrons (since then, we've been blessed with a few more, and I finally found a couple that suit, I think?), but I've had a blast painting him - and I feel like my glowy shiny sword technique is getting better, which is cool! I'm also still trying to get better at writing things on minis! Anyone have any tips for stuff like the scrollwork on his left shoulder?

He's meant to be in a suit of artificer armor, but I don't think that's a thing anymore...

As always! Thanks for dropping by! I love reading any comments I get!

Thanks very much, mate! The main part of this mini is from the sword guy from this: https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-GB/Imperial-Fists-Legion-Command
I feel like Templars are almost thrown a bone by GW via the heresy stuff, but there's far too much fists Iconography for my liking. That said, this guy felt perfect for an esteemed leader/veteran type, and I adored the idea of filigree on marine armor to represent artificer stuff - I'm tempted to bag one of the Blood Angels transfer sheets for that reason.

Quick C+C request!

This is another one of those projects I've been tinkering away at for an age.
While I kinda wanted to save posting them until I'd painted them, I've decided to see what people's thoughts are.

The horse with greenstuff was an early foray into sculpting, I don't hate it, but I'm not overly keen to try and do it for all of them. I have ample, more '40k-looking' bits in my collection, and a fair old bit of plasticard too.
However, I kind of don't mind how they look now?

So, I'm trying to gauge what other people think! Am I being blinded by laziness (and a big, never-shrinking backlog...), or do they suit the templar aesthetic?
Cheers for your replies!

Thanks! Haha, I thought of that too! Unfortunately, GW didn't furnish the knights I scavenged these from with any rein-holding hands either, so whatever complex system of whistles and nudges they must have used to direct their horses in those ancient times must've been preserved and passed to my templars...

...or something?

What's good, loyal sons of the 7th legion?

Finished up another templar, in between working on my Admech kill team.
Having finished priming up the last of my marines, I've realized I've got a TON of these to get through, and just over week left in blighty. This time, I'm probably gonna bunch of little men with me, but from which army, I'm not sure. Currently leaning towards Admech or Inquisition, though I could definitely bring some templars, too. After all, they are daddy's favorite little genocidal fanatics.

Anyway, here's another experimental one, from way back in those dark days of my third year in Hull Uni. Quite like how he turned out, and like, admire my ambition at taking that DA logo off using only a hobby knife wftwasIthinkinghowdidInotsliceoffhafmyhandinstead.

He was also the first mini I tried the glowy sword effect with (didn't go well initially, due to shaky hands because 21 year old me liked to gun black coffee much more than is healthy), and if I learned anything from that, it was that Guilliman Blue is really helpful at making the whole thing much much more forgiving.

Another personal goal of mine was to start getting the lettering on the scrollwork to start to look half decent. After a bit of trial and error, I think I'm getting there. Let me know what you think! (Also, feel like I've sufficiently de-greyknight-ized it, no?)

I love Standards and Banners in 40k, especially with marines - even moreso after doing a bit of the history of their use in medieval combat, and learning the tragicomic story of Henry of Essex, who lived in my hometown, Reading. (Check that out if you want something farcical and yet super depressing in equal measure.) I like to imagine the guy on the banner is my Emperor's Champion, who's proven himself to be a right tough sonofaprimarch in the past. Not sure if that's his name, or the banner bearer's, though

As ever, thanks for stopping by, and I hope you like what I'm showing ya! Will probably try to get another few army shots in, before these boys go back into cardboard cryostasis to await my return...

I've just had a PM asking how I paint my templars, and figured, as it's the first time I've ever actually tried to write it out, that I'd post it here, as much so that I remember as that anyone who likes what they see can copy it. Nothing groundbreaking, or revolutionary, and everything more-or-less follows the GW method, but it gives reliable results. Whilst it's never been consistant, I've spent a long time on these, as they were my first army, but I'm pretty sure the method at the moment is as follows:

Blacks - Black base colour. 1st highlight Eshin grey. Keep the lines reasonably thick, and on any edge. 2nd highlight, Dawnstone. Keep as thin as possible, but again, practically every edge (some gentler edges don't need it.) If you want, wash with nuln oil after, just to keep things tidier.
(for characters, often I'll do an extra extreme highlight of administratum grey on top of this)

Metal - straight up leadbelcher, nuln oil. Done.

white pauldrons - corax white, watered-down recess shade with nuln oil, cleanup with white scar.

white robes/armor - celestra grey, nuln oil, layer of ulthuan grey, edge highlight white scar.

Gold - retributor armor, agrax earthshade, auric armor gold highlight, agrax earthshade again

red - mephiston red, agrax earthshade, evil sunz scarlet highlight

red robes - Khorne red, agrax earthshade, evil sunz scarlet highlight

purity seals - screaming skull, agrax earthshade, highlight of screaming skull again, write over top with brown micron pen (or brush rhinox hide if you feel brave)

leather - mournfang brown, agrax, highlight scrag brown
or
rhinox hide, agrax earthshade, doombull brown

skin - bugman's glow, reikland fleshshade, cadian fleshtone, kislev flesh

eyes - basecoat mechanicus std. grey, layer pallid wytch flesh, iris with abbadon black/black micron pen

scout fatigues/stone - mechanicus std. grey, nuln oil, dawnstone, administratum grey

bone - rakarth flesh, agrax, rakarth flesh layer, pallid wytch flesh highlight

red lenses - khorne red, carroburg crimson, mephiston red highlight, evil sunz scarlet highlight, wild rider red highlight, fire dragon bright highlight, yriel yellow highlight

green lenses - caliban green, warpstone glow highlight, moot green highlight, yriel yellow highlight, cassandora yellow wash
(for other greens, ie; laurels, use above minus the yriel yellow

sand - mournfang brown, wash agrax, drybrush rakarth flesh, drybrush tyrant skull (heavily), mordheim turf to taste.

lanterns/yellows - Averland sunset, wash cassandora yellow, wash lower end fuegan orange (skip this stage for armor or anything that isn't glowing), highlight yriel yellow, highlight flash gitz yellow (white scar highlight with a final wash of cassandora yellow doesn't hurt!)

glowy blue power swords are the same as the GW youtube tutorial for nemesis force weapons. Medium is your friend, as is watered-down guilliman blue.

Take care, and happy painting!

Evening, Dakka!

Finished my first marine since moving! Got loads on the workbench, now - including some blood angels for the local model shop!

This is a Sword Brother I've had in the works for a long ol' while - I wanted to use him in kill team when it was announced, but kill team had dumb rules that meant sergeants were really boring, so now he's just a cool dude with knives on his hands!

Enjoy! More coming soon!

Right. So. Apologies that the transfers are a lil sloppy atm, still drying as of taking the pic. Bae is out of town, and I'm too tired to be social (hectic week at work), so I indulged myself and finished off this lil fella.

I present to you - Veteran Brother Osrick.

Brother Osrick joined the Warband of the Pilgrim Saint early on, as it was pronounced unto the Brothers of the Black Templars by the High Marshall himself. Visions of hellish conflicts flashed before his eyes, as Osrick recalled the great many campaigns he had participated in. The scouring of Rubrum IV, the long tropical hell of the Mencius demi-crusade. Beyond that - his days volunteered to the Imperial Guard, the long, cold campaigns on the astroid belts of the Viridi Emmer system, the claustrophobic boarding actions with the cybernetic vanguard marines allied to the Mechanicum mowing down heretics, the screams, the gore, the thrill. Further still. The gladiatorial pits of Lucrecio XIII, the streets of a hive world, the constant struggle, the constant frantic urge to survive. A wry smile crept onto the old Templar's face. He'd seen enough to promote him to the household of the High Marshall himself, a veteran beyond even those adorned with the trappings of Sword Bretheren. Yet Osrick stayed where he, and the chaplains, knew he belonged. Initiate. Crusader Squad. No matter the objective, no matter the foe - drown them in bolter fire, or in their own blood, Osrick belonged on the battlefield, carrying out the emperor's will, with simple, brutal, singularity of purpose. He would take up the cause of the Saint.

So...

Ooh, fluff, haven't done that in a bit. But I figured Osrick deserved it.
We all knew that kid growing up. I don't mean a TFG, I mean, that one kid who was a bit feral, even amongst the normal self-destructive drive of suburban kids - skateboards, jackass, underage drinking, music that in hindsight seemed only to exist to annoy and worry our parents, occasional minor cases of law-breaking - it seems universal that there was always one kid who really was a law unto only themselves. And like, not in a cool way. In a "there's something not right there and I would like to avoid him as much as is possible" way. Ours was called Karney (sic) and he was a total wiener. As far as I know, he's now approaching 30, still barely employed, still trying to chat to kids at the skatepark, smoking cheap pot and being a creep.
Osrick fell into my hands, via a friend, supposedly from his.

Stripping the paint off of him, it occurred to me, Osrick must have seen some stuff in his time. Initially disgusted, he languished in a box for a while, with a slew of other bits, until my fondness for goofy 90s GW got the better of me, and I decided to add him to the crusade. Went for a bit of 90s flare with the chainsword, and, as Karney was a total edgelord (and also I'm in Japan, where this is totally a thing in every single fight sequence ever) and deffo not because I go carried away with gore again, I gave him a fresh anime-style headwound where you pour blood out of some unseen wound at the top of your forehead but it doesn't mess up you eye at all.
As I've slowly added paint to him, I've become pretty fond of this old dog of war. Though I plan to add him to my general run-of-the-mill bolt pistol chainsword boyos for use in cc oriented Crusader Squads, I like to imagine he's a bit of a grizzled veteran, who's stayed out of leadership because he'd rather be fighting and killing than planning and leading.

Anyway, hope y'all enjoy! Take care!

So long, 2019!

Just hammered out the last mini of the year - I'm back in the UK for Xmas, and won't have any real hobbying ability, so this is it for me, I think!
Merry Christmas to you all!

Greetings, Dakkadakka! Finished my first mini of the year! Starting up again on the templars, and getting back into my stride. I'm hoping to be able to knock out at least one mini a week in 2020, circumstances permitting!

And what better way to start, than a real slogger of a mini. My custom Techmarine with servo-harness (of sorts!)!
I picked this guy up while I was still in Korea, as he went on Last Chance to Buy, and was a figure that I had always drooled over.
Unfortunately, when I received him, he was in a pretty fragile state, so I was probably overly cautious when it came to cleanup. Quite a few parts - including his conversion beamer!!!! - were simply unserviceable. As such, he ain't the cleanest boyo, but I love him all the same.

The colour scheme was based vaguely off of the tech-marine in Damnation Crusade, with a few liberties taken with his pauldrons, but I think the overall effect is templar-y enough, but also mars-y, too. I opted for the mace because it was what I had to hand at the time, and also because I felt like he needed something a bit more medieval to fit in with the templars - I like the tension between zealous martian machine cults, and the fervent religiosity of the templars, so I thought he'd probably want to prove to his brothers that he hadn't strayed too far from the path of beating your opponents to death. The hand-flamer was a coincidence entirely, just idly fitting bits together, when I really fell in love with the look, and the rest of the servo-harness kinda evolved from that.
And, of course, the immediate desire of every owner of the admech ruststalkers kit, to make a grimdark R2-D2. Naturally.

I also seem... (SEEM) to have figured out my new lens, so that's something!
Anyway, hope you enjoy my stuff, and please feel free to give me any input! Thanks very much for stopping by!

I've got like 9 more of them, so watch this space! I've been dreaming of Stormravens lately... not that I have the ¥12900 for one, but still, the thought is nice. I'd love to slap a few astromechs on some fliers, before I inevitably use them for weird-o inquisition stuff. Maybe cram one or two into tank cupolas, too, just cause I have a few of those just kicking about...

Just read through your plog, excellent work all around, heretics don't stand a chance against that force. Love the attention to detail on the land raider and you managed to make scouts look good... SCOUTS!
