I'm interested in seeing SM's in companies with their heraldric colors displayed! I am currently moving on from my 'Nids to endeavor in this task, myself.

Brother!

Also Ultramarine, 3rd company. Some of the old RT/2nd era flags and banners had a prominent “III” so when my collection became larger then just a few squads, I went with the third company.

I don’t do shoulder trim though. Some of my marines are RTB01 marines without the rimmed pads, and I don’t want them to feel left out. I do however use red as my primary accent color.

I don't play a whole lot any more, so my hobby time has been spent crafting and painting the 1st company of the Blood Angels. I based it on the older fluff of the Index Astartes, in which it states that the Blood Angels 1st company is made up entirely of Vanguard Veterans.

I'm currently (re)building my Blood Angels, and have always fielded them as the 5th Battle Company, which is represented by a black tear drop/bood drop shape on a red field.

One day I hope to have a full company painted with proper livery for chapter, company, and squad (Emblem displayed on the right knee)

Looking forward to finishing up the command squad & starting on the tactical marines.

Take it easy for now.

Another 3rd Company here even though my Ultramarines are the one army without a touch of paint to them. I decided on 3rd back in 3rd since the Tyranids were my primary and I liked the idea of having my second army at odds with my first. Only 1st Company I'll ever use are Tyrannic War Vets, but if I ever do Skyhammer, those models will all be 8th and 9th Company. It's just fun to have everything sorted like that. Keeps things fluffy even in a tournament quality list.

It’s interesting to see the distribution. Good number of 3rd company, a few 2nd, isolated others. No 4th posting here. I think in my years of play and hanging out in the P&M section I’ve only seen one person painting a 4th company. Something about green trim does not lend itself to visual appeal (although the one I saw was nice)

1st company is one of those things that collecting the whole off is kinda crazy. Although with modern formations, you can actually do whole armies of it now and be legal. White trim looks good on some schemes, less so on others

2nd have some named characters, and the yellow/gold trim looks quite nice. It helps that they are the poster boys of the poster boys. Less the case then it used to be: it looks like GW painted up the whole 3rd company of the Ultras for the latest codex.

3rd Company is the obvious choice of the dashing, suave, good looking generals out there. While the UM don’t get any support, a lot of the other chapters 3rds get some love with named characters a/o supplemental codexes (IIRC the sentinels of terra and the Iron Hands books are both 3rds) Red as an accent color also goes very well with blue/green/yellow/others, so aesthetically a good call.

4th company is the odd man out. Green IMHO doesn’t go well with a lot of the main chapter’s colors. If you want to paint a rarely seen company, these are your guys.

5th I think is the second least common company. Black trim works well for some chapters (IF/BA especially)

Reserve companies almost never see paint. I think I saw one guy paint his bikers with orange trim once. They suffer a fate similar to the 1st, in that fielding a whole army of them is very difficult. But unlike the vets, they don’t bring anything to the table.

People talk about scout armies from time to time, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone attempt to collect ~100 of the guys.

original poster here;
So, i'm starting spacemarines. I'm starting with my 9th company, so I have plenty of heavy weapons for my tactical squad choices and sternguard. Then I'll be building out into my 10th, 8th, and 6th and 7th, buying 5 droppods along the way. I then want to focus on my 2nd and 1st companies. I've planned my fifth to be gladius (which I won't accomplish for a long time) and my 3rd and 4th to be armor and air focused.

I'm about half way through painting the Crimson Fists' Fifth Company and squadrons of most of the standard Marine vehicles. I plan on adding 1st and 10th company assets once I'm done with the battle company.

My Dark Angels are 3rd company, mostly for the same reason as people collect Ultra's 2nd - they're used for the box art, and I didn't think that much about it when I initially started collecting them (almost two decades ago). Sometimes I wish I'd gone for one of the other battle companies, but if I do decide to I've only got to do the kneepads (DA don't do the coloured shoulder rims, and I haven't done many company markings on vehicles). I'm nowhere near even a demi-company painted, so I'll save myself the shame and not post a picture. I'll get there eventually though, Conker's Imperial Fist company looks awesome.
After Dark Vengeance though, I've seen some 4th company lovin'.

My friend who play's Ultras decided on 3rd as well - the red does look nice, although I have seen someone with a 4th company army, and I think the green looked really good.

I had started my Homebrew Chapter as the 3rd Company, but when I switched to the Space Wolves codex that changed. My next space marine project will be Imperial Fist 5th company with 1st and reserve companies support.

That’s a very ambitious project. You get a lot of huge games where you are? I ask because a full battle company is larger then most games we see around here, so anyone gunning for more then one company is a little excessive. Awesome, but excessive.

I have my full company loaded out with it’s “shelf” gear, and then a number of models on the swap shelf below them, in case I want to mix up the weapons. Although to be honest, the swap shelf is getting quite large. But how many tactical/bolter marines does one man need?

I need to grab a new picture, this one is a little dated.

Well, my space wolves are all from Krom's Great Company (in fact, I have built up what I think is Krom's Great Company...

My Dark Angels Battle Company will be the complete 5th Company (when I get round to having them painted)

My Blood Angels are the 3rd Company

My Deathwatch army doesn't use Company markings for obvious reasons...

My Crimson Fists are 3rd Company, but there is some 1st Company and 10th Company mixed in.

Because of Rynn's World (and because I am not going to get a full Battle Company of Space Marines), the 3rd Company is at less than half strength. I have two full ten-man squads of Tactical Marines, two five-man squads of Assault Marines (one squad deploys with Jump Packs, the other deploys on bikes), and two five-man squads of Devastator Marines (one squad with Lascannons, the other with Missile Launchers). The Captain deploys alongside his Command Squad (the Company lacks a Company Champion, so instead it deploys with four plasmagun Veterans and an Apothecary). The Company also has a single Dreadnought.

I think you can see squad markings here

This is my full Ultramarines' 1st and 2nd Companies (over 230 marines). To my knowledge, accurate squad/company breakdown and heraldry

If curious why all the red, its because I usually have my forces led by my Master of the Forge, so the Red secondary shows that the pods and transports come from his cruiser

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Yes, I have other off screen vehicles too... the black trimmed in blue units are from my Reclusiam command force (I had made one before it was a thing in game).

Impressive, Lobukia!

Love the red bolter casing intermixed in there too. Nice touch.

As far as the Blood Angels are concerned, they deviate from the Codex Astartes slightly in their company and squad designations. The Chapter symbol goes on the left shoulder, and the company is depicted on the right, however the Company is not denoted by the left shoulder pad rim, but instead uses these symbols on the interior of the shoulder pad:

And, as the left shoulder pad is occupied by the company emblem, the marines use these squad markings on the right knee of their power armor, denoting squads one through ten.

I'm paying specific attention to the details of company and squad markings, to include making sure that my Honor Guard/Command Squad for my Company Captain has the proper first company livery depicted on their right shoulder pad, etc.

Glad to see others are also putting that level of detail into their forces.

Take it easy for now.

Well, as you've probably guessed, many were purchases not my own production. That being said I deliberately wanted a squad that's more "commando", darker armor, no white, etc.. and as someone who's played since RT days, I couldn't pass on the old school red bolter
